Bernard Sanders is a prominent American politician and activist who was born on September 8, 1941. He now holds the position of senior senator for Vermont in the United States Senate. Sanders has a tight connection with the Democratic Party, having caucused with Democrats in the House and Senate for the majority of his congressional career and seeking the party’s presidential candidacy in both 2016 and 2020. Despite making history as the longest-serving independent in the history of the United States Congress, Sanders maintains a close relationship with Congress.
Born from a Jewish family that was part of the working class and lived in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City, Sanders received his education at Brooklyn College before going on to get his degree from the University of Chicago in 1964. During his time as a student, he participated in the civil rights movement as a protest organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
He moved to Vermont in 1968 and, throughout the early and middle 1970s, he participated in political campaigns for third parties, although all were unsuccessful. In 1981, he won the election for mayor of Burlington as an independent candidate, and he went on to win three more elections. Since his election to the United States House of Representatives in 1990, he has been serving as the representative for Vermont’s at-large congressional district. Subsequently, he was one of the co-founders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
He was elected to the United States Senate in 2006, making history by being the first non-Republican to be elected to the position in 152 years. Before that, he served as a congressman for the United States for sixteen years. The year 2012 and the year 2018 both saw Sanders win reelection to the Senate. From the years 2013 to 2015, he served as the chairperson of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, and from 2021 to 2023, he presided over the Senate Budget Committee.
After Patrick Leahy retired from the Senate in January 2023, he assumed the position of head of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Additionally, he became the senior senator and dean of the Vermont congressional delegation. Sanders received the second most votes in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, making him a prominent contender for the Democratic candidacy for president respectively.
His campaign in 2016 produced tremendous grassroots passion and money from small-dollar contributors, which carried him to victory over eventual winner Hillary Clinton in 23 primaries and caucuses until he surrendered in July. This was even though his expectations were originally modest. As a result of his impressive performance in the early primaries and caucuses in the year 2020, he emerged as the front-runner among the historically big field of Democratic contenders.
During April in the year 2020, Sanders gave up the candidacy to Joe Biden, who had been victorious in a string of decisive wins while the field was becoming smaller. He was a supporter of both Clinton and Biden throughout their separate campaigns against Donald Trump in the presidential election in the United States. Since then, he has been a Biden ally who is quite close to him. Sanders is responsible for promoting a move to the left within the Democratic Party during his bid for the presidency in 2016.
His resistance to economic injustice and neoliberalism, as well as his support for workers’ self-management, have earned him a reputation as a proponent of progressive causes. He is in favor of labor rights, universal and single-payer healthcare, paid parental leave, tuition-free tertiary education, an ambitious Green New Deal to create jobs that address climate change, and worker control of production through cooperatives, unions, and democratic public enterprises. These are all issues that pertain to domestic policy.
Reducing expenditure on the military, increasing the amount of diplomacy and international cooperation, and placing a stronger focus on labor rights and environmental issues while negotiating international trade deals are all things that he is in favor of when it comes to foreign policy. Sanders has shown his support for democratic workplaces and has extolled some aspects of the Nordic model.
Some people have drawn parallels and contrasts between his political ideology and that of left-wing populism as well as the New Deal programs that President Franklin D. Roosevelt implemented. Sanders went to James Madison High School, where he was the captain of the track team and finished third in the New York City indoor one-mile event. Sanders also attended James Madison University. During his senior year of high school, he ran a campaign that centered on assisting orphans during the Korean War. However, he was unsuccessful in his first election, placing in last place among three candidates for the president of the student body.
Despite the tragedy, he got involved in the fundraising efforts that his school was arranging for Korean orphans. One of these events was the organization of a charity basketball game. When Sanders was in high school, Walter Block, an economist, was also a classmate. The death of his mother occurred when he was 19 years old.
The next year, in 1962, at the age of 57, his father passed away. Sanders attended Brooklyn College for a year between the years 1959 and 1960. After that, he transferred to the University of Chicago, where he eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1964. In subsequent interviews, Sanders said that he was a lousy college student because the classroom was “boring and irrelevant.” He also stated that he considered community action to be more significant to his education than the classroom itself.
