John Barry Humphries is a famous Australian comedian and theatre personality. His most famous personas are Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. He has a wide range of skills, including those of film producer, director, writer, actor, comedian, and satirist. He had had a productive career spanning over half a century, appearing in everything from one-man performances to television to feature films. Stardom on a global scale resulted from his depiction of Edna, a dowdy Australian housewife, spanning close to fifty years.
Humphries started his performing career on stage and eventually became a major figure in London’s West End musical theatre scene. First appearing in a small role in the 1967 smash blockbuster Bedazzled, he went on to appear in a number of additional cameos and small supporting parts in other films. Novels, memoirs, treatises, screenplays, and plays are only some of the works that have come from Humphries’ pen.
He was born to Eric Humphries and Louisa Humphries, two wealthy businesspeople, on February 17, 1934, in the Melbourne suburb of Kew. His father was a manager in the building industry. His parents, who dubbed him “Sunny Sam,” gave him a wonderful upbringing and made sure he had everything he could have ever wanted. He would spend hours in the backyard, changing into costumes like a sailor or a Red Indian from his collection of disguises. He always had a passion for performing in front of an audience, and these early interests helped pave the way for his future success in the entertainment industry.
First, he studied at the “Camberwell Grammar School” in Melbourne’s Canterbury neighbourhood, and then he moved on to the “Melbourne Grammar School” in the city’s South Yarra and Caulfield neighbourhoods. He did not like mathematics, avoided cadets, and did not care for sports. As a teen, he excelled in both English and Art, and he was awarded top marks in both subjects. He spent two years at “Queen’s College,” which is part of “University of Melbourne,” where he majored in Philosophy, Fine Arts, and Law before dropping out.
He rose to prominence as an advocate of Dada, a deconstructive and illogical art movement that originated in Zurich during the fictional “World War I.” During the years 1952 and 1953, he collaborated with a Melbourne-based band to produce a number of Dada-influenced albums. Amazing public stunts demonstrating his love of oddities undoubtedly aided him in convincingly playing a wide range of eccentric and hilarious roles in film and television.
The malicious “sick bag” joke is an example of this kind of prank. On flights, he would sneakily pour a can of “Heinz Russian Salad” into an air-sickness bag. Later, to the horror of the other passengers and staff, he would devour the contents of the bag after pretending to throw up in it.
In 1955, he wed Brenda Wright, but by 1957, the couple was already separated. The couple tied the knot in 1959. Once again, 1970 saw the breakdown of this marriage. In 1979, he married for the third time to Diane Millstead, and just as before, by 1989, they were no longer together. Presently, he is wed to Lizzie Spender, daughter of English poet and writer Sir Stephen Spender. From his second and third marriages, he had Rupert and Oscar, two boys, and Emily and Tessa, two girls. Oscar is the editor of the English monthly magazine “Apollo,” while Tessa is a famous Australian actress.
During the 1960s, he developed a severe alcohol dependency that began to negatively impact his personal and professional life. It had a role in the demise of his first marriage to Brenda Wright and his subsequent one to a much younger woman. In time, he developed an abhorrence for drinking that has lasted to this day. He has been an enthusiastic reader since his infancy and has a collection of over twenty-five thousand books in his London property in West Hampstead.
He is a prominent landscape painter and art collector whose holdings include works by Charles Conder and Jan Frans De Boever, among others. Also, he is an avid supporter of the arts and music. He became a member of the MTC. In 1953, John Sumner established it. Edna Everage was first created by him for a skit in 1955. On December 12, 1955, the play Olympic Hostess debuted at the Union Theatre of Melbourne University, introducing the term for the first time.
When he moved to Sydney in 1957, he became a member of the “Philip Street Revue Theatre,” which would go on to become a major venue for satire and parody performances. There, he made his debut in a satirical revue called “Two to One,” which also included the veteran music artist Max Oldaker. He come back the ‘Olympic Hostess’ at the ‘Philip Street Revue Theatre,’ and Edna’s role looked like a smash, with the play running for fourteen months with eight performances each week.
Over the years, he performed on stages in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the Middle East, and the Far East. Drawings for “The Wonderful World of Barry McKenzie” were done by New Zealander artist Nicholas Garland in 1964 after the idea was pitched to Humphries by Peter Cook, editor of the satirical magazine Private Eye. A collection of comic strips was released in London but was afterwards banned in the country of Australia. Barry Crocker, an Australian singer, starred in the film adaptations of the novel titled “The Adventures of Barry McKenzie” (1972) and “Barry McKenzie Holds His Own” (1974).
In 1967 he made his cinematic debut with a cameo in the film ‘Bedazzled’. Many more films, including “Percy’s Progress” (1974), “The Great Macarthy” (1975), “Side by Side” (1975), “The Getting of Wisdom” (1977), “Dr. Fischer of Geneva” (1985), and “Napoleon,” featured him in a cameo or supporting parts (1995). He provided his voice for the characters of Bruce in “Finding Nemo” (2003), the Great Goblin in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” and Braulio in “Justin and the Knights of Valor.”
However, his true calling card was always his one-man satirical theatrical revues, in which he mostly represented Edna Everage, Les Patterson, and Sandy Stone. A Night with Dame Edna (1979), An Evening’s Intercourse with Dame Edna (1982), Edna, The Spectacle (1998), Back with a Vengeance (2007), and Dame Edna Live: The First Last Tour (2009) are all examples of his 2 1/2 hour monologue presentations (2009). He has been in the social history series “Barry Humphries’ Flashbacks” (1999), the comic chat programme “The Dame Edna Treatment,” and the discussion show “The Dame Edna Experience”.
