Barkhad Abdinasir Abdi was born on April 10, 1985, in Mogadishu, Somalia’s Banaadir coastal area, to a Majeerteen family. He grew up in Mogadishu and then moved to the Banaadir region. In his family, he was the second of four children, and he shared his childhood with two brothers and a sister.
Abdi is the son of a first-generation Somali immigrant family that escaped war-torn Somalia when he was a tiny boy, and he grew up in the United States. 2013 saw him appointed as an ambassador for ‘Adeso,’ an African humanitarian NGO formed by Somali environmentalist Fatima Jibrell and aimed at empowering grassroots Africans.
Abdi’s father was a school teacher who opted to emigrate with his family to Yemen in order to escape the civil war that had erupted in Somalia when Abdi was just six years old, in order to avoid the conflict. In interviews, the actor has said that he has both positive and negative recollections of his time in Somalia.
He and his family members were granted asylum in the United States as legitimate refugees. In 1999, they relocated to the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota. A robust Somali community, the biggest of its kind in North America, flourished in this city.
It took a long for young Abdi to adjust to life in the United States. He once remarked that he was used to playing football (soccer) in Yemen, but that he had to give it up since it was not available in the United States. Instead, in order to blend in, he learnt how to play basketball. The ‘Minnesota State University Moorhead,’ as he was known, was his next stop.
His brother’s mobile phone store in a Minneapolis mall and as a limousine driver for a relative’s chauffeur firm were both places where Abdi found employment. He also worked as a DJ on the side from time to time.
Having received numerous accolades and nominations for his portrayal of convicted real-life pirate Abduwali Muse, the Somali actor revealed in an interview with ‘The Los Angeles Times’ that he intends to relocate permanently to Los Angeles in order to pursue a legitimate career in the entertainment industry. In my mind, I don’t only consider myself as a Somali character. With his family, he splits his time between Los Angeles and Cedar-Riverside, in the Twin Cities.
According to the actor, his leanness is a natural result of his lifestyle and not a result of his nutrition.Burgers, spaghetti, and rice are on the menu.” “Abdi and his pals also possessed a physical characteristic that would have been tough for many American-born performers to replicate – their extraordinary leanness,” the Chicago Tribune said in a piece on his hiring in “Captain Phillips.”
Abdi feels that ‘Captain Phillips’ has made a significant difference in his life, especially the way in which others approach and speak to him. He wants people to be aware of how hardworking Somalis are, as well as their ability to adapt to whatever scenario or location in which they find themselves.
The Somali-American actor and independent filmmaker Barkhad Abdi is most remembered for his award-winning performance in the multiple-‘Oscar’-nominated biographical drama ‘Captain Phillips,’ which also starred Tom Hanks. Barkhad Abdi was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. The film’s director, Paul Greengrass (of the “Jason Bourne” series fame), cast him as the frightening leader of a gang of Somali pirates, despite the fact that he was virtually a non-professional actor.
He had never performed on stage or in a film before, but he had dabbled in directing lousy music videos and short films in his previous life. Since starring in ‘Eye in the Sky,’ which was met with widespread critical and commercial acclaim, Abdi has acted in other big Hollywood movies, including “Blade Runner 2049,I simply want to keep acting and improving my skill and see how far it takes me,” says the subtle and grounded Hollywood rookie.
As a limousine driver in Minneapolis, Abdi responded to an open casting call for the film ‘Captain Phillips,’ directed by Academy Award-nominated director Paul Greengrass, who was looking for actors to play the desperate Somali kidnappers involved in the 2009 ship-hijacking incident that resulted in the kidnapping of merchant marine Captain Richard Phillips in the Guardafui Channel.
Abdi jumped at the chance to work with “the Forrest Gump man,” and he auditioned alongside three of his close friends, all of whom were from the same Minneapolis area, for the role. They ended up getting recruited together and were instrumental in the film’s success, which went on to garner six Academy Award nominations in all. According to the casting director, the four individuals were picked because they were “the chosen ones, that anointed bunch who stood out.”
Aside from his nominations at the 2014 ‘Oscars,’ and at the 2014 ‘Screen Actors Guild Awards,’ for his performance in ‘Captain Phillips,’ he was also nominated for a ‘Golden Globe,’ for ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role,’ alongside fellow nominees Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, Michael Fassbender, and Daniel Brühl. He ended up taking home the prestigious ‘BAFTA’ prize for the film.
Abdi was notoriously paid just $65,000 for his labour in Greengrass’s film and was forced to return to his brother’s store once the film was completed as a result.
This was largely as a result of his dismissal from his employment as a script reader for a television programme, which occurred in January 2014. However, the same year, his big-budget part in the Judd Apatow and Amy Schumer comedy “Trainwreck” was axed. He had previously starred as a guest star in an episode of the hit television show “Hawaii Five-0.”
At long last, his breakthrough came with a supporting part in Helen Mirren’s acclaimed film “Eye in the Sky” (2015), followed by a role in the action–comedy “The Brothers Grimsby” (2016), in which he co-starred with Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong. His voice was also heard in an episode of the popular animated sitcom ‘Family Guy’ in 2016, when he reprised his role as Abduwali Muse.
In 2017, he co-starred in the film ‘Pirates of Somalia,’ also known as ‘Dabka,’ with Evan Peters, Melanie Griffith, and Al Pacino, among others. Based on the book ‘The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World,’ by journalist Jay Bahadur, the film was released in 2012. Jay Bahadur has also contributed to the script of the film.
‘Good Time,’ in which he co-starred with Robert Pattinson, and ‘Extortion,’ both of which were released in 2017.
Denis Villeneuve’s version of Blade Runner 2049, in which he co-starred with Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling, was released in October 2017 and received an Academy Award nomination for best director. His most recent major film was ‘The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir,’ in which he co-starred with Indian megastar Dhanush.
As a regular cast member in the second season of Hulu’s Stephen King horror–fantasy series ‘Castle Rock,’ he is set to make his television debut in 2019. In addition to the films ‘Beneath a Sea of Lights,’ he is now working on two more movies, both of which are currently in post-production.
