Barbra Streisand, the full name Barbara Joan Streisand (born April 24, 1942, Brooklyn, New York, United States), is an American singer, songwriter, actor, director, and producer who was widely regarded as the finest popular vocalist of her time until she passed away in 2011. Sainte-Barbara Streisand, the first major female star to demand parts as a Jewish actress, helped to reinvent female popularity in the 1960s and 1970s with her sympathetic depiction of ethnic urban characters. As a result of her enormous popularity, which was only surpassed by her outspokenness, she rose to become one of the most prominent women in the show industry, known for her liberal views and philanthropic endeavors.
When she was in high school, Streisand joined a summer theatrical club in Malden Bridge, New York, and started studying acting. She eventually became a successful dramatic actor in her own right. Immediately after college, she relocated to Manhattan, where she had her first break in 1960 when she performed at a tiny neighborhood nightclub and won an amateur talent competition (and dropped the second a from her first name).
Following a series of cabaret appearances in Greenwich Village, she secured a minor comedy part as Miss Marmelstein in the Broadway musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962), in which she absolutely dominated the audience. In addition to making numerous television appearances, including on The Judy Garland Show, she went on to make a series of best-selling record albums, which contained bright and creative versions of famous songs, starting in 1963. She was an instant phenomenon. It was her debut solo record, The Barbra Streisand Album, that earned her the Grammy Awards for album of the year and best female vocal performance, only the first two of many honors she would get in the coming years.
Streisand established herself as a prominent Broadway star with the part of Fanny Brice in the musical Funny Girl, which launched her professional career (1964). In 1965, she won two Emmy Awards for the television program My Name Is Barbra, which was the first in a long line of very popular television specials. She made her feature film début in 1968, reprising her role as Fanny Brice in a film that won an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Despite the fact that Funny Girl is based on Brice’s life rather than Streisand’s, the film established many of the enduring elements of Streisand’s screen image, including her transformation from an awkward ugly duckling to a stylish, sophisticated star, her Jewish heritage, and her perseverance and determination. Despite widespread early belief that her unconventional appearance would prevent her from becoming a major movie star, Streisand’s self-deprecating opening line (“Hello, gorgeous,” said into a mirror) and her first solo number (“I’m the Greatest Star”) underscored the fact that Streisand had succeeded despite widespread early belief that she would fail.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Streisand appeared in a number of cinematic musicals, including Funny Lady (1975), the sequel to Funny Girl, as well as Hello, Dolly! (1969), On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), and A Star Is Born (1976), among others (1976). As the screwball heroine in such comedies as The Owl and the Pussycat (1970) and What’s Up Doc? (1972), as well as the love lead in the tremendously successful The Way We Were (1973), she has a cult following (1973).
The film Yentl, based on an Isaac Bashevis Singer novel about a young lady who pretends to be a male in order to complete her studies, was her feature film debut. She has since directed a number of other films. Streisand not only acted in the titular character, which she had wanted to portray since 1968, but she also contributed to the script and co-produced the film.
Throughout her career, she has mostly played straight dramatic parts in films such as Nuts (1987), The Prince of Tides (1991), and The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), the latter of which she directed. But she went on to star in a number of comedic films like Meet the Fockers (2004), Little Fockers (2010), and The Guilt Trip (2013). (2012). Contrary to their outward appearances, the majority of Streisand’s characters possess the same characteristics of power and strong independence coupled with vulnerability.
Although she was acclaimed for her work as a director, Streisand’s admirers were arguably even more devoted to her work as a vocalist. In addition to the albums that contained the soundtracks to her films and television specials, her most popular recordings included The Barbra Streisand Album (1963), The Second Barbra Streisand Album (1963), The Third Album (1964), People (1964), Je m’appelle Barbra (1966), Stoney End (1971), Streisand Superman (1977), Guilty (1980), The Broadway Album (1985), Higher Ground (1997), and Love Is the Answer (2000).
She was born Barbra (2009). Although she had eschewed live performances for many years, she made a comeback during the 1990s with a series of concerts that smashed box office records. In the twenty-first century, Streisand maintained her presence in the public eye by performing in concerts and publishing records, including the duet albums Partners (2014) and Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway (2017), among other works (2016). In the 2018 album Walls, she sang about a variety of current events and was critical of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Among Streisand’s various honors were a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 1995 and a Medal of Honor from the French Legion of Honour (2007). A Kennedy Center Honors Award was presented to her in 2008, and she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
