Drag comedy films The Young King will star Michael Shannon, Kiersey Clemons, and Barbie Ferreira. The movie’s screenplay was written by Sullivan, and Kim Bailey of Corporate Witchcraft, and Isabel Marden is producing it with Clemons. The movie will follow aspiring drag queen Jules, who travels to Las Vegas to see her estranged father Mick and to participate in the greatest drag king show in the country. Mick, a notorious gambler and sometimes clown for kids’ parties, is less than thrilled to see his daughter’s macho aspirations, suit-wearing, or her pursuit of Ronnie, a tough dancer he often hangs out with. Over a hectic weekend, Jules and Mick’s worlds come together.
The project has backing from GLAAD, Sundance Institute, IFP’s Project Forum, Tribeca Film Institute, and Inside Out Toronto. It is billed as one of few films exploring the drag king scene. Ferreira most recently made an appearance in Jordan Peele’s suspenseful film Nope. She previously starred on the network in the Sarah Jessica Parker-starring HBO series Divorce. She is most recognized for her performance on HBO’s Euphoria. She is now starring with Ariana DeBose in the psychological thriller House of Spoils. She also appeared in the Unpregnant movie produced by HBO Max.
Aperture Talent Agency, Authentic Talent and Literary Management, and Felker Toczek all represent Ferreira. In the upcoming limited series George & Tammy on the Paramount Network and Paramount+, Shannon will co-star with Jessica Chastain. The Bikeriders by Jeff Nichols, McCarthy by Václav Marhoul, A Little White Lie by Michael Maren, and the reprise of his part in Drew and John Erick Dowdle’s American Tragedies: Waco – The Trials, a prequel to the series, for which Shannon also serves as Executive Producer, are all upcoming projects.
