Barbara Corcoran Bio

She is well known for her presence on the renowned television program ‘Shark Tank.’ Barbara Corcoran is an American entrepreneur, author, and television personality. She was raised in poverty by her Irish Catholic family, which she inherited from her mother. Her alcoholic father had a negative influence on her upbringing. She attended a number of different schools while growing up in New Jersey with her nine siblings. After graduating from ‘Leonia High School’ in New Jersey, she went on to get a bachelor’s degree in teaching before starting her career as a real estate salesperson.

In the aftermath of this, she and her then-boyfriend formed a corporation known as ‘The Corcoran-Simone.’ After her partner left her for another woman, the firm was renamed ‘The Corcoran Group’ to honor her. Around the mid-1970s, she also started publishing a real-estate newsletter, dubbed ‘The Corcoran Report,’ which was sent to subscribers. She did, however, sell her company to a company called ‘NRT’ in the early 2000s. As a contestant on reality television series such as “Dancing with the Stars” and “Shark Tank” in the 2010s, she gained popularity. Her present residence is in Manhattan, where she resides with her husband, Bill Higgins.

Barbara Ann Corcoran was born on March 10, 1949, in Edgewater, New Jersey, to Irish Catholic parents. She was raised in the United States. She was the second child of a family of ten children from a lower-middle-class background. She grew raised in a family of eight children, four brothers, and five sisters.

Her mother, Florence, is regarded as a life mentor by her daughter. She has also mentioned that her mother provided excellent care for all of her children, nearly entirely on her own. Barbara’s father was a semi-employed alcoholic who did not give a damn about his family, and the family managed to live despite their adversity. She did, however, mention that he was a “funny guy” who would keep the rest of the family amused on occasion.Barbara developed into a strong-willed young lady as a result of her experiences overcoming adversity. She gave tribute to her mother for instilling in her a strong work ethic. She longed badly to rise above her plight and build out a successful career for herself in order to live a wealthy lifestyle. She, on the other hand, struggled to maintain decent marks in school.

She began her education at a local Catholic primary school in New Jersey before transferring to the prestigious ‘St. Cecilia High School’ in Englewood. In the summer after her freshman year, she decided to leave school. Her problem with dyslexia was one of the contributing factors to her poor academic performance in school. Additionally, her health condition made it difficult for her to focus on her schoolwork. She so ended up receiving consecutive Ds in school. She also struggled to maintain her interest in topics and ended up transferring to a number of different institutions.

She ultimately finished her high-school graduation from ‘Leonia High School,’ and then relocated to Sparkill, New York, to continue her further education at ‘St. Thomas Aquinas College,’ where she now resides. It was a liberal arts institution that was nowhere near the top of the city’s educational rankings. In 1971, she received her bachelor’s degree in education. Soon after, she started to put in her time at the office.

She began working in a variety of industries shortly upon graduation from college. She took on a variety of odd occupations, including those as a receptionist, a waiter, and a salesperson. She was able to save a significant amount of money by working around 10 jobs over the following two to three years. She, on the other hand, never stayed in one industry for long. Nonetheless, she was well aware in the 1970s that the real estate market in New York City was thriving at the time.

Ray Simone, her ex-boyfriend, was a builder at the time of their breakup. She had met him while working as a waiter at a restaurant in New York City, and they had become fast friends. When he informed her about the income-generating potential of the real estate sector, she indicated an interest in working in the industry. They came to the conclusion that they should form a real estate firm together. The Corcoran-Simone Corporation was established in 1973 and given the name ‘The Corcoran-Simone.’

Simone made a $1000 investment in the firm. Originally, it was a corporation that helped people find apartments. In the 1970s, a large number of individuals from all over the nation were relocating to New York. As a result, the company prospered. They established relationships with a variety of realtors and home builders and assisted individuals in finding apartments that met their requirements and budget.

Although Barbara was employed at the company, she was continuously on the lookout for alternative methods to get money. Once, when he was exhibiting an apartment to a rich engineer, the engineer expressed an interest in purchasing the place rather than renting it. Barbara made her very first sale with this one. The firm received a $3000 commission as a result of this transaction. Barbara found this more appealing than the work she had been doing before, and she persuaded Simone to change her business model from offering rental flats to selling them.

She placed advertisements in publications such as ‘The New York Times,’ in search of salespeople. She invested a significant amount of money in the recruitment of new sales agents, and the firm began turning a profit within two years of its founding. Because Barbara was responsible for the majority of the labor, she was also responsible for the majority of the management choices.By 1975, the firm had engaged 14 salespeople and was paying them hefty commissions and bonuses. In addition, the corporation made a profit of almost $500,000. It was quietly but steadily establishing itself as one of the most rapidly expanding real estate enterprises in New York. The partners, on the other hand, abruptly parted ways. According to reports, Simone had been seeing another lady at the time, which finally drove Barbara to end her relationship with him. As a result, she made the decision to become the sole owner of the firm.

A long period of time passed before the firm was finally divided. By 1978, Barbara had acquired control of the firm and was the only owner. New York City’s first woman-owned real estate business, The Corcoran Group, was established as a result of this process and named after Corcoran herself. A crew of seven sales representatives contributed to $350,000 in sales in the company’s first year of operation under her own ownership and management.

She started selling on the internet in the 1990s after making the transition to online operations. Her ability to foresee possibilities in advance led her to migrate to the internet before any other realtor in the city could catch up with her. She also acquired a large number of web domains in order to be able to resell them later on if and when her rivals decide to make the leap to the internet. However, she said that she was not doing this for the purpose of making money, but rather to be able to stay on top of her rivals and have excellent relations with them.

As early as the early 2000s, ‘The Corcoran Group’ had achieved unprecedented success in the real-estate industry. More than $100 million in net profits were generated by the corporation, which had an employee base of 850 employees. However, the firm lagged well behind many of the industry’s top competitors in terms of sales. Many real-estate corporations expressed an interest in purchasing ‘The Corcoran Group,’ which was finally sold to Nz’zInc.,’ a New Jersey-based corporation.

They offered to acquire the firm for $20 million, but Barbara demanded $66 million instead, claiming that the number 66 was fortunate for her. In 2001, the transaction was completed in less than two weeks. She also ventured into the world of publishing. ‘The Corcoran Report,’ a real estate periodical she wrote in the 1970s, was named for her. It discussed the most recent real-estate developments in New York City. She subsequently wrote a book titled ‘If You Don’t Have Big Breasts, Put Ribbons on Your Pigtail,’ which was published in 2008. She started her television career in the mid-2000s when she appeared as a political pundit on ‘Fox News.’ She has also been on a number of television programs as a real estate expert.

She has also participated in the reality television program ‘Shark Tank’ as a competitor. During the course of her work on the program, she made investments in 22 firms. The program featured various young entrepreneurs who made presentations in front of investors in order to persuade them to invest in their companies. Aside from that, she has participated in the reality television program ‘Dancing with the Stars and the television sitcom ‘Grace and Frankie.’Barbara Corcoran ended her relationship with her boyfriend, Ray Simone, when he announced that he was engaged to be married to his secretary.

Barbara Higgins tied the knot with Bill Higgins, a former naval captain, in 1988. She attempted to have children, but it seemed like they were experiencing reproductive troubles. In 1994, she became the mother of a son called Tom, who was born via in-vitro fertilization. She also became the mother of a kid a few years later. She presently resides in Manhattan with her husband and their two children.
