Born on October 30, 1987, Ashley Graham is an American model who has become one of the most popular faces in the modeling industry and especially for women who classify themselves as curvy (a term Graham favors over “plus-sized”). Known for her availability and body confidence, Graham has been described as an ambassador of the “real beauty” movement, which celebrates what real women’s bodies look like as opposed to the impossible standards set by the fashion industry. With her growing popularity, she’s graced the covers of the world’s biggest fashion magazines, such as Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar and has walked the runway for leading fashion brands and designers.
Graham first met her husband Justin Ervin, a documentary filmmaker and cinematographer, while attending church. The couple wed in 2010. Graham declared her pregnancy through Instagram in August 2019, before giving birth to a son in January 2020.
At a 2017 interview with CBS, Graham confessed that her interracial relationship with Ervin, who is Black, was shocking for her Nebraska household:
“I won’t ever forget that feeling of just sitting there with Justin, thinking, ‘I am so ashamed that I had to bring him in to meet these folks, these individuals who raised me and taught me how to live, and he is being treated so horribly,’ she said. “And he explained ,’Racism is not surprising, but it is always disappointing.'”
Graham was discovered at age 12 in a shopping mall in Lincoln, Nebraska. Shortly after she had been appearing in advertisements and catalogues and steadily learning the ropes of what it took to be a severe model. From the time she turned 18, she’d moved to New York City to pursue her career full time. Graham first signed on with Wilhelmina Models in 2001 but two decades later, moved to Ford Models before the agency closed down its plus-sized branch. Currently, she’s represented by IMG.
Graham has appeared on the covers of Vogue, Elle, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar and has walked the New York Fashion Week runways, most especially for Michael Kors’ spring/summer 2018 collection. One of the many fashion campaigns she has appeared in, Graham has worked with Bloomingdale’s, Liz Claiborne, Hanes, Target, Macy’s, Levi’s and Nordstrom.
One of her TV appearances, Graham engaged in a contentious Lane Bryant commercial in 2010 and later featured in a 2016 music video for the DNCE tune “Toothbrush.” She’s also served as a backstage host for its Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants and as an official estimate for America’s Next Top Model. In 2019 she started hosting the Lifetime competition series American Beauty Star.
