Vosloo began his career as an actor on stage in South Africa, where he went on to win many Dalro Awards for his parts in plays such as Don Juan, Hamlet, and Môre is ‘n Lang Dag. Vosloo is also a recipient of the South African Order of Merit (SAOM) for his contributions to the arts. Soon after, he established himself as a regular performer at the State Theatre in Pretoria. In addition to his work on Meisie van Suid-Wes, he has also starred in the Torch Song Trilogy, which has garnered a great deal of critical acclaim.
The year 1984 marked the beginning of his career in film, and he has since gone on to receive Dalro Awards for his performance in films such as Boetie and Border Toe, both of which were released in 1990, and Circles in a Forest, in which he starred alongside another South African actor named Frank Opperman. Boetie op maneuvers, the sequel to “Boetie,” featuring Vosloo in 1986. Vosloo has appeared in a variety of films, including “Morenga,” “Saturday Night at the Palace,” “Skeleton Coast,” and “Rutanga Tapes,” amongst others. After moving to the United States, Vosloo began his acting career with roles in Born in the R.S.A. and Salomé, both of which were performed at the Northlight Theatre in Chicago and the Circle In The Square Uptown in New York City, respectively. Both of these productions starred Al Pacino.
1492: Conquest of Paradise was the first American film in which he appeared as an actor. In addition to his depiction of the eponymous character in 1999’s “The Mummy” and 2001’s “The Mummy Returns,” he is well-known for his villainous parts in films directed by John Woo and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. His most notable of these appearances was his performance as “The Mummy” in 1999 and 2001. Imhotep, the malevolent high priest of ancient Egypt, served as the principal adversary in both of the films he was in. Vosloo gave the performance of Francois Molay, the secondary antagonist’s right-hand man, in the movie “Agent Cody Banks,” which was released in 2003.
With the novel “Forgiveness,” which was published in 2004, Vosloo made his way back to South Africa to tell the story of a former police officer who searches for the loved ones of the anti-apartheid activist he was responsible for killing. His performance as the mercenary Colonel Coetzee was included in the film “Blood Diamond,” which was released in 2006 and was shot in South Africa.
He is Johan Daniel ‘Deon’ Vosloo and Johanna Petronella’s second son and their second child overall. Because both of his parents worked in the entertainment industry, the family moved around quite a bit inside South Africa in quest of new performing venues.
Vosloo and his sister Nadia moved around with their parents for a long until they finally settled down and the children were able to enroll in a traditional school. During this time, Vosloo and Nadia attended a variety of schools. His parents ran a drive-in theater in Port Elizabeth, where the family lived. It was in a school production that he made his acting debut when he was only seven years old, and it was immediately apparent that he has a unique talent for the stage. After graduating from high school and being dismissed from the military due to a physical condition, he continued his education at Pretoria Technikon.
The anti-apartheid theater organization that he joined provided him with the opportunity to perform on stage as well as get experience working behind the scenes. After some time had passed, he became a member of the Pretoria State Theatre. After beginning his career on stage at a theater academy in Pretoria, he began collecting plaudits for his acting almost immediately after he graduated.
Vosloo began his acting career in South African theater, where he quickly established himself as a regular at Pretoria’s State Theatre. There, he was honored with many Dalro Awards, among other accolades, for his work in plays such as Don Juan, Hamlet, and Môre is ‘n Lang Dag. After moving to the United States, he appeared in “Born in the R.S.A.” at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre and “Salome” at Circle In The Square Uptown, starring alongside Al Pacino and Sheryl Lee. Both productions were in Chicago. This latter production was only on stage for a total of 18 performances, which took place between June 28, 1992, and July 2, 1992.
His debut picture in the United States was titled 1492 and it was called Conquest of Paradise. After the success of the first installment of Darkman in 1990, he went on to star in both of the film’s disappointing sequels. In the John Woo thriller “Hard Target,” he had a co-starring role alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme. Both the 1999 original version of “The Mummy” and its 2001 sequel, “The Mummy Returns,” featured Vosloo in the role of the movie’s namesake character. Both of these movies highlighted his work as the ancient Egyptian high priest Imhotep, and he was in both of them.
Vosloo returned to his home country of South Africa for the production of the film Forgiveness in 2004, telling the story of a former police officer who searches for the loved ones of the anti-apartheid activist he was responsible for murdering. There was filming done there in 2006 for the movie Blood Diamond, in which he played the role of the mercenary Colonel Coetzee.
