Bio

Angela Lansbury is an actress who has been equally successful on stage, in films, and on television. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in this field. She was born in the United Kingdom but raised in the United States and has Irish ancestry. She relocated her family to the United States in 1940 in order to avoid the German bombing of Britain during the “Second World War.”

After arriving in the United States, she worked menial jobs in order to support her family until she was cast in significant parts in movies and on stage. She became the youngest actress in history to be nominated for two Academy Awards for her performances in the films “Gaslight” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” even before she was 21 years old.

Despite being nominated for an Emmy Award for a total of 12 consecutive years, she did not end up taking home the prize. On the other hand, she was awarded six Golden Globes and five Tonys. In movies such as “The Manchurian Candidate,” “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” and “Death on the Nile,” she has given performances that have won over the hearts of moviegoers.

Her performance in the musical Mame as the character Mame Dennis shocked the reviewers, who had high expectations for her. Her role as the protagonist in the mystery television series “Murder, She Wrote” is what brought her the greatest fame. She made her comeback to the theater and played a number of parts in plays such as “Deuce” and “Blithe Spirit” that received high praise from the critics.

Angela Brigid Lansbury was born on October 16, 1925 in Regent’s Park, which is located in the central area of London. Her mother, Moyna Macgill, was an actress, and her father, Edgar Lansbury, was a lumber trader. Her grandpa, George Lansbury, was the head of the “British Labour Party” and an anti-war campaigner. Her father followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and became a politician, continuing the family tradition. After her father passed away from stomach cancer when she was only nine years old, she was left in utter devastation.

She went to “South Hampstead High School” from 1934 to 1939, but other than that, she educated herself mostly by reading, going to the theater, and seeing movies. In 1940, she enrolled in the “Webber Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art” in Kensington, West London, to begin studying acting at the institution.

In 1940, after the passing of her grandpa, her mother emigrated to the United States in order to get away from the Blitz. After moving to the United States, she was awarded a scholarship by the “American Theatre Wing” and enrolled at the “Feagin School of Drama and Radio.” She completed her education there and received her diploma in 1942.

She had performed onstage in a school production of Maxwell Anderson’s “Mary of Scotland” back in Britain. The play was directed by Maxwell Anderson. During her early career in the United States, she was seen in productions of “The Way of the World” by William Congreve and “Lady Windermere’s Fan” by Oscar Wilde.

Angela Lansbury began her professional acting career in 1942, at the age of sixteen, when she performed as a nightclub act at the Montreal establishment known as the “Samovar Club.” She lied about her age and claimed to be 19 in order to make $60 each week by performing Noel Coward songs.

At a party that her mother had organized, she eventually became acquainted with John van Druten, who was one of the screenplay writers for the movie adaptation of “Gaslight.” He thought she would be perfect for the part of “Nancy Oliver,” a scheming cockney maid, in the film “Gaslight,” which was released in 1944. The film critics and moviegoers alike were blown away by her performance in her first film role, and as a result, she was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of “Best Supporting Actress.”

She also entered into a contract with MGM for a period of seven years and engaged an agent. In the film “National Velvet,” which was released in 1944, she co-starred with Elizabeth Taylor and was a major contributor to the picture’s financial success. The next year, she had a starring role in an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic “The Picture of Dorian Gray” on film. Although the movie was not a financial success, her performance was recognized with a “Golden Globe” award, and she was also nominated for an Oscar for the second time.

She had roles in a variety of films produced by MGM throughout the course of the next decade, some of which include “The Harvey Girls” (1946), “State of the Union” (1948), and “The Three Musketeers” (1948). Due to the fact that she was often put in unfavorable parts and occasionally had to portray characters who were much older than she was, she decided to terminate her contract with MGM. After that, she went back to working in theatre plays.

Her first performance on Broadway was in 1957, when she played the role of Marcel Cat in the play Hotel Paradiso. She was praised by the media for her performance in the part, and she went on to star in another Broadway musical in the year 1960 called “A Taste of Honey.”

After appearing in a few of films that were met with positive reviews, such as “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs” (1960) and “All Fall Down” (1962), she was offered a part in the film “The Manchurian Candidate” (1962). She was recognized by the Academy Awards committee once again for her performance in the film, this time as a cunning mother.

In the year 1966, she debuted on stage for the first time in the leading role of “Mame Dennis” in the musical “Mame.” She won her first “Tony Award” and blew away the judges with her surprising song and dance performances, which resulted in her receiving a flood of highly good accolades.

She maintained her presence in the film industry during the subsequent years. In the 1970s, she began to obtain important parts, and one of them was in the movie “Something for Everyone,” in which she portrayed a countess. She was given the role of “Miss Eglantine Price” in the Disney film “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” which was only partly animated, in the year 1971. After that, in 1978, she appeared in “Death on the Nile,” a British mystery film based on Agatha Christie’s book. Her character’s name in the film was Salome Otterbourne.

In 1984, over the advice of her agency, she made the decision to participate in the television series “Murder, She Wrote.” Her performance as the protagonist ‘Jessica Fletcher’ became one of the most recognized parts of her career, and she would continue to play the character for the following 12 years.
