Angel McCoughtry Bio

Angel Lajuane McCoughtry is an American professional basketball player who was born on September 10, 1986. She is a two-time winner of the gold medal at the Women’s Olympic Basketball Competition and most recently played for the Minnesota Lynx of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). 2009 marked the year that McCoughtry graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville.

She was chosen by the Atlanta Dream as the first player overall in the WNBA draft in 2009, and throughout her time with the team, she was regarded as the franchise player for that organization. In addition, McCoughtry has performed on the international stage in countries such as Turkey, Slovakia, Lebanon, Hungary, and Russia.

Her father had played for Coppin State University, which is located in west Baltimore, in the forward position. She began her basketball career at the Northwood recreation facility in northeast Baltimore. She went on to excel in the game while attending the St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Maryland) in east Baltimore during her high school years. Before enrolling at the University of Louisville, McCoughtry received her secondary education at The Patterson School in Lenoir, which is located in the state of North Carolina.

McCoughtry shattered the school records for the most thefts in a season, the most points in a season, and the most points in a game. She also led the Big East Conference in scoring, led the team in rebounding, and stole the most balls. During her sophomore season in the 2006–2007 season, she was honored as the Big East Player of the Year. During the summer of 2007, McCoughtry was a member of the United States national women’s basketball team that competed in the Pan American Games.

During McCoughtry’s junior year at Louisville, she not only shattered her own records for points and steals on the season, but she also tied her own record for most points scored in a single game. She was a significant contributor to Louisville’s victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the championship game of the Big East tournament in 2008. In addition to this, McCoughtry received All-American honors as a junior from several different organizations, including the WBCA, the USBWA, and ESPN.com.

During the first game of her senior season, McCoughtry became the first player in Louisville women’s basketball history to break the mark for most points scored in a career. In a game that she played against the University of Hartford in December of 2008, she scored her second triple-double by scoring points, grabbing rebounds, and making steals.

In the WNBA draft that took place in 2009, the Atlanta Dream used the first pick overall to select her.[10]After signing with the Atlanta Dream, McCoughtry quickly established a reputation for being a superb scorer who possessed both excellent penetration and a propensity for drawing fouls. With an impressive 12.8 points per game in her first year of professional basketball, McCoughtry was named Rookie of the Year.

The following year, McCoughtry had a considerable increase in her statistics, averaging 21.1 points per game, which contributed to the Atlanta Dream achieving a record of 19–15 and earning the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Dream was still in the running for the championship despite having the number four seed because their starting line-up included star center Erika de Souza, all-star power forward Sancho Lyttle, starting shooting guard Izi Castro Marques, and McCoughtry at small forward, who was rapidly becoming an all-star caliber player.

The Dream was able to make it all the way to the WNBA Finals, where they faced off against the Storm from Seattle. McCoughtry broke the WNBA playoff scoring record with 42 points in game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Liberty, which helped her team advance to the WNBA Finals. McCoughtry had a historic performance in game 3 of the WNBA finals, scoring 35 points for the Dream despite the Dream being down 2–0 in the series. Despite McCoughtry’s effort, the Dream were defeated by the Storm and were swept 3–0. Throughout the postseason, McCoughtry scored 26.7 points on average per game.

In the 2011 season, McCoughtry would have the best season of her career. She would average a career-high 21.6 points per game, propelling the Dream to a 20–14 record and the number three seed in the Eastern Conference. McCoughtry would have the finest season of her career. In addition, McCoughtry was selected as an all-star player for the WNBA for the very first time in her career. The Dream would eventually reach the WNBA Finals once more, where they would face off against the Minnesota Lynx this time.

Despite yet another spectacular effort in the Finals, the Dream was eliminated in three straight games. Both the record for most points scored in a quarter (19) and the record for most points scored in a game (38) were set by McCoughtry in Game 2 of the Finals.McCoughtry was placed on an indefinite suspension by the Dream during the 2012 campaign for reasons that were not disclosed.

McCoughtry was given a ban, but she still managed to win her first scoring title by averaging 21.4 points per game. Additionally, McCoughtry led the league with 2.5 steals a game, which was averaging. After her suspension was up, McCoughtry was also able to participate in the playoffs, but the Dream were ousted by the Indiana Fever in the first round with a score of 2–1. The Indiana Fever went on to win the title for that season.

When McCoughtry’s rookie contract with the Dream expired in 2013, she immediately re-signed with the team for a multi-year agreement. McCoughtry would go on to win her second scoring title in the 2013 season, averaging 21.5 points per game and also setting a new career high with 2.7 steals per game. It was the fourth season in a row that McCoughtry had a regular season scoring average of at least 20 points per game. A record of 17–17 was good enough for the Dream to finish in second place in the Eastern Conference.

The Dream would go on to win both the first and second rounds, advancing them to the championship game where they would face the Minnesota Lynx once again. Because McCoughtry had a less-than-spectacular performance this time, she scored fewer than 20 points in each game of the series, which resulted in the Lynx sweeping the Dream for the second consecutive year in the Finals.
