Andrew Scott Bio

Andrew Scott was born on 21 October 1976, Andrew Scott is a Canadian jazz guitarist and educator who is widely admired for his warm tone and traditional swing and bop-influenced approach. Scott was born in 1979 and he spent his formative years in Toronto, where he went to school at Humber. After graduating from York University with a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, he went on to receive a Master of Music at the New England Conservatory.

He has been teaching music at Humber College since 2005. Scott made his first appearance as a band leader in 2004 with This One’s for Barney, and then again in 2006 with Blue Mercer. On the 2009 album Nostalgia, he collaborated with trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso and saxophonist Dan Block. In 2017, he released Brightest Minute, a record featuring a quartet.

For his performance in Dead Bodies, the Irish actor won an IFTA. In 2010, he took on the role of Jim Moriarty on the BBC’s Sherlock. In the 2015 James Bond film Spectre, he plays the role of C. In the TV movie “Lennon Naked,” he portrayed Paul McCartney. He was in the TV adaptation of Henry James’s novel The American.

Andrew Scott, an Irish actor, is well-known for his roles in such films as “Sherlock,” “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” and “Fleabag.” Scott made his acting debut in the Irish drama “Korea,” and he went on to star in a number of productions at Ireland’s national theater, the Abbey Theatre. Scott’s first Broadway role was in David Hare’s “The Vertical Hour” in 2006, for which he was nominated for a Drama League award.

His film and TV credits include “Band of Brothers,” “John Adams,” “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” and the NBC comedy series “My Life in Film,” among others. He won the IFTA and BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of James Moriarty on the BBC series “Sherlock,” which brought him great acclaim.

In the spring of 2014, Scott starred as a jaded rock star who questions the point of it all in “Birdland,” a play by Simon Stephens. His career as an actor took a significant leap forward after he was cast in numerous high-profile films, including “Frankenstein,” “Spectre,” and “Hamlet,” all produced by 20th Century Fox.

After announcing his participation in the HBO/BBC adaptations of “His Dark Materials,” “Black Mirror,” and “Modern Love” later in 2019, Scott starred as the Priest in the second season of the critically acclaimed British comedy “Fleabag.” Andrew began studying acting at Trinity College in Dublin when he was 18 years old, but he left after just six months. He was invited to join the Abbey Theatre company and went on to star in four productions there.

Colin Farrell made a brief return to the big screen in the 1997 Irish indie Drinking Crude. Andrew started his professional life in London in the year 2000. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg cast him in an episode of their TV miniseries Band of Brothers. Andrew has made a habit of returning to the stage, most recently costarring with Bill Nighy and Julianne Moore in David Hare’s The Vertical Hour on Broadway in 2006. A Girl in a Vehicle with a Guy and Cock, both at the Royal Court Theatre, earned him two Laurence Olivier awards for best actor in a Play.

Andrew earned a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor in 2012 for his role as the villainous Professor Moriarty in the hit British television series Sherlock. Two years later, for his supporting performance in Pride, he was awarded the British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. Andrew won the 2019 Gold Derby TV Award for Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his performance as The Priest on the Emmy-winning comedy Fleabag.

Scott spent six months at Trinity College in Dublin before deciding to pursue acting full-time. Many productions featured him onstage at Ireland’s most prestigious stage, the Abbey. Scott eventually relocated to London for a part in the Michael Gambon TV movie Longitude. He has said that being a gay guy made him feel unsafe and ashamed in his home country and that this was one of the motivations for his desire to relocate to England. In a newspaper interview in 2000, however, he revealed that he had a partner living in Dublin.

Between stints on stage, he did some acting in films and TV shows in the UK, Ireland, and the US. The American miniseries Band of Brothers and the British comedy My Life in Film stand out among others. He has been nominated for a Tony for his Broadway performance of The Vertical Hour, and he has won numerous honors for his performances on stage in Ireland and England.

Scott’s film and television career took off after he became known around the world as Moriarty, the antagonist of the BBC TV series Sherlock, appearing in films like Victor Frankenstein, costarring James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe, which was panned by critics, and Spectre, the usual 007 box office smash, which was nonetheless considered a weak James Bond entry. Scott’s lifelong dream came true in 2017 when he starred as Hamlet in a critically lauded production on the London stage.

Scott told the Times of London in 2019 that he and his longtime partner, Stephen Beresford, a former actor who wrote the screenplay for Scott’s film Pride, were no longer together. After playing the Priest in the second season of the critically acclaimed British comedy Fleabag, Scott’s reputation rose internationally in 2019. His role as the protagonist’s forbidden love interest connected greatly with the show’s predominantly female audience in the UK and the US, leading to an online craze in which he was dubbed the “hot priest,” a term coined by Phoebe Waller-Fleabag Bridge’s character.
