Andrea Levy was born on March 7, 1956, to middle-class parents in Archway, London. Her ancestry was mostly Afro-Jamaican. Levy used her writing as a way to go deeper into her heritage as a black British woman and her sense of self.
Every Light in the House Burnin’, Levy’s debut novel, was released to the public that same year. This fictionalized account of a Windrush family in 1960s North London is based on the author’s own family history. Finding a publisher interested in the story proved challenging.
Never Far from Nowhere, her second novel came out in 1996. The story centers on two English sisters of Jamaican origin and is set in a council estate in the 1970s. Vivien’s light skin allows her to blend in more easily, while Olive’s darker skin makes her stand out. It made the longlist for the Orange Prize, given annually to an outstanding English-language novel by a female author.
Levy experienced a chasm between her upbringing and her Jamaican heritage. Levy made her first trip to Jamaica in 1998, fifty years after her father had initially landed in England on the Windrush. She was embraced warmly, and the family history was eagerly recounted to her. Fruit of the Lemon, her third novel, follows protagonist Faith Jackson as she travels to Jamaica in search of her ancestors. The book was awarded the Orange Award for Excellence.
