Andra Day was born Cassandra Monique Batie on December 30, 1984, but she is better known by her stage name, Andra Day. She is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Day asked Jeffrey Evans to be her manager in 2013, and he accepted her request. In 2011, Day was given a development deal by Buskin Records, which was formed by Evans.
Her countless unplugged covers and mashups on her YouTube channel, the majority of which were taped in her sister’s bedroom in San Diego, were largely responsible for Later Day & Buskin landing a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. The day was also collaborating with Gurvitz during this time period on the creation of over 40 unique tunes. Raphael Saadiq, Questlove, James Poyser, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and The Dap-Kings were among the other producers and contributors to what would eventually become her debut studio album. Other producers included DJ Jazzy Jeff. Day gave a performance at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014, and it was there that filmmaker Spike Lee noticed them. He offered to direct the music video for her single “Forever Mine,” and she gladly accepted.
Day has also given performances at the 2015 BET Awards, the closing ceremonies of the 2015 Special Olympics, the Essence Music Festival, and on television shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Good Morning America, and a lot of other programs. She also gave a performance of “Mississippi Goddam” by Nina Simone for the soundtrack of the documentary What Happened, Miss Simone?, which can be found on Netflix.
Her debut album recorded in a studio, titled Cheers to the Fall, was made available for purchase on August 28, 2015. It was greeted with praise from music critics, with NPR’s Katie Presley remarking that Day’s vocal possesses “Eartha Kitt’s unflappable confidence, Amy Winehouse’s effortless grasp of classic jazz, Billie Holiday’s access to raw emotion, and Adele’s range and pop sensibility.” At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, where she also performed, the album was up for consideration for the award for Best R&B Album, while the song “Rise Up” was up for consideration for the award for Best R&B Performance.
Additionally, the album reached its highest position on the Billboard 200 chart at number 48. The tennis player Serena Williams appeared in an advertisement for Beats by Dre in September 2015, and the song “Rise Up” was featured in the campaign. Day collaborated with Stevie Wonder to perform a song called “Someday at Christmas” for an Apple TV commercial that aired in November and December of 2015. The song was performed by Day and Wonder.
