Bio

Jeep vocals and an eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul[also known as blue-eyed soul)rhythm and blue jazz and reggae.Frank, Winehouse’s debut album released in 2003, was a critical success in the United Kingdom and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Beese introduced Winehouse to his boss, Nick Gatfield, who shared his excitement about signing the young artist. Winehouse was signed to Island as rival interest in her grew, with representatives from EMI and Virgin beginning to make moves. Beese told HitQuarters that he believed the excitement over an artist who was an atypical pop star at the time stemmed from a backlash against reality TV music shows, which included audiences hungry for fresh, genuine young talent.

Debut album (2003–05) Frankie was born in north London’s Chase Farm Hospital to Jewish parents. Her father, Mitchell “Mitch” Winehouse, was a window panel install before becoming a taxi driver, and her mother, Janis Winehouse (née Seaton), was a pharmacist. Amy had an older brother, Alex (born 1979), and the family lived in Southgate, London. Winehouse’s maternal uncles included a number of professional jazz musicians.

Cynthia, Amy’s paternal grandmother, was a singer who dated English jazz legend, Ronnie Scott. Amy’s interest in jazz was influenced by her and Amy’s parents.  Her father, Mitch, frequently sang Frank Sinatra songs to her, and whenever she was reprimanded at school, she would sing “Fly Me to the Moon” before going up to the headmistress to be reprimanded.  Winehouse’s parents divorced when she was nine years old and she lived with her mother during the week and with her father and his girlfriend on weekends in Hatfield Heath, Essex.

That same year, her grandmother Cynthia suggested she go to the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School on Saturdays to improve her vocal skills and learn to tap dance. Winehouse died on July 23, 2011. On that note.  On June 27, Winehouse performed at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Party concert in London’s Hyde Park, and the following day at the Glastonbury Festival.

On July 12, she performed a well-received 50-minute set at the Oxegen Festival which was followed the next day by a 14-song set at T in the Park. She performed at the Staffordshire leg of the V Festival on August 16, and the following day at the Chelmsford leg of the festival. According to festival organizers,

Winehouse drew the largest crowds of the festival. The audience’s reaction was reported to be mixed. On September 6, she was the Saturday headliner at Bestival, where her performance was described as polished — interrupted by a curfew as the show was running late, due to Winehouse starting an hour late — and her storming off stage.

At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC, which opened in December 2008, a clip of Winehouse’s music was included in the “Roots and Influences” area, which looked at connections between different artists. One thread began with Billie Holiday, progressed to Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige, and ended with Amy Winehouse. Back to Black was the seventh-best-selling album in the world in 2008.

The album’s sales contributed to Universal Music’s recorded music division’s market performance remaining above that of the overall music market2009–11: Projects completed prior to death In a Harris Interactive poll of US residents conducted for VisitBritain, the results of which were released in March 2009, one-fifth of those polled said they had listened to Winehouse’s music in the previous year. Winehouse collaborated with Rhythms del Mundo on their cover of Sam Cooke’s ”

Cupid” for an Artists Project Earth benefit album released on July 13, 2009. Winehouse and Ronson covered Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party” for the Quincy Jones tribute album Q Soul Bossa Nostra, which was released on November 9, 2010. Winehouse and a drummer? Questlove of The Roots agreed to form a group, but her difficulties obtaining a visa delayed their collaboration.

As part of the project, Salaam Remi had already created some material with Winehouse According to the Times, Universal Music pressed her for new material in 2008, and Winehouse had not been near a recording studio as of September 2nd Winehouse’s spokesman was quoted in late October as saying

She attended the school for four years and formed a short-lived rap group called Sweet ‘n’ Sour with her childhood friend Juliette Ashby before enrolling full-time at Sylvia Young Theatre School. Winehouse was allegedly expelled at the age of 14 for “not applying herself” and for having her nose pierced. This has been denied by Sylvia Young— “She switched schools when she was; I’ve heard she was expelled, but she wasn’t. I would never have kicked Amy out —just as Mitch Winehouse has.

She also appeared with other children from the Sylvia Young School in an episode of The Fast Show in 19, and later attended The Mount School, Mill Hill; the BRIT School in Selhurst, Croydon; Osidge JMI School, and then Ashmole School. A career in music Early in one’s career After playing with her brother Alex’s guitar, Winehouse purchased her own at the age of 14 and began writing music a year later. Soon after, she began working for a living, including a stint as an entertainment journalist for the World Entertainment News Network, as well as singing with the Bolsha Band, a local band.

In July 2000, she was named the National Youth Jazz Orchestra’s featured female vocalist; her influences included Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington the latter of whom she was already listening to at home. Amy’s best friend, soul singer Tyler James, forwarded her demo tape to an A&R representative. In 2002, Winehouse signed with Simon Fuller’s 19 Management and was paid £250 per week against future earnings.  Despite being a regular jazz standards singer at the Cobden Club, she was kept a recording industry secret while being developed by the management company

Darcus Beese, her future A&R representative at Island (Universal), first heard of her when the manager of The Lewinson Brothers showed him some of his clients’ productions that featured Winehouse as a key vocalist. When he asked who the singer was, the manager told him he couldn’t tell him. After deciding that he wanted to sign her, it took Beese several months of asking around to figure out who she was. However, by this time, Winehouse had already recorded a number of songs and signed a publishing deal with EMI. She met producer Salaam Remi through thecury Prize, by the way. Back to Black, her 2006 follow-up album, led to five 2008 Grammy Awards, tying the then-record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night.

Winehouse received three Ivor Novello Awards: Best Contemporary Song for “Stronger Than Me” in 2004, Best Contemporary Song for “Rehab” in 2007, and Best Song Musically and Lyrically for “Love Is a Losing Game” in 2008. She won the 2007 Brit Award for Best British Female Artist, and her album Back to Black was nominated for Best British Album. On July 23, 2011, Winehouse died as a result of alcohol poisoning. Her posthumous album Back to Black became the UK’s best-selling album of the twenty-first century at the time. Winehouse was ranked 26th on V in 2012.

The touring team, Winehouse performed at the Rock in Rio Lisboa festival in Portugal in May 2008.  Despite a late arrival and technical difficulties with her voice, the crowd warmed to her. She performed two Specials in addition to her own material. Winehouse returned to performing at a jazz festival in Saint Lucia in May 2009, despite torrential downpours and technical difficulties. It was reported that she was unsteady on her feet and had difficulty remembering lyrics during her set. She apologized to the audience for being “bored” and ended the set mid-song. Winehouse performed with The Specials on their songs “You’re Wondering Now” and “Ghost Town” in front of a cheering crowd on August 23 at the V festival.

During her time in Saint Lucia, she collaborated with Salaam Remi on new music. Island co-president Darcus Beese stated that a new album would be released in 2010, adding, “I’ve heard a couple of song demos that have absolutely floored me.”  Winehouse stated in July 2010 that her next album would be released no later than January 2011, stating, “It’s going to be very much the same as my second album, where there’s a lot of jukebox stuff and songs that are… just jukebox, really.” However, Ronson stated the same month that he had not begun recording the album. At a movie premiere, she performed ”

Valerie” with Ronson but forgot some of the song’s lyrics. Winehouse performed a four-song set in October to promote her fashion line. In December 2010, she performed a 40-minute concert at a Russian oligarch’s party in Moscow, with the songs chosen by the tycoon. She performed five dates in Brazil in January 2011, with opening acts Janelle Monáe and Mayer Hawthorne Winehouse cut short a performance in Dubai on February 11, 2011, due to booing from the audience.

During the performance, Winehouse was said to be tired, distracted, and “tipsy.” Winehouse began her twelve-leg 2011 European tour in Belgrade on June 18, 2011. Her performance was described as a scandal and a disaster by local media, and she was booed off the stage because she appeared to be too drunk to perform. She was reported to be unable to recall the city she was in, the lyrics of her songs, or the names of the members of her band when attempting to introduce them.

According to the local press, Winehouse was forced to perform by her bodyguards, who wouldn’t let her leave the stage when she tried.  She then canceled performances scheduled for the following week in Istanbul and Athens. On June 21, it was announced that she had canceled all of her tour dates and would be given “as much time as it takes” to sort herself out.  most recent public appearance was on July 20, 2011, at Camden’s Roundhouse in London, when she made a surprise appearance on stage to support her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, who was performing “Mama Said” with The Wanted.
