One Amanda S. C. Gorman born March 7, 1998, American poet is also an activist. Her writing mostly addresses the African diaspora as well as topics of oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization. Gorman was the inaugural recipient of the National Youth Poet Laureate title. In 2015, she released the poetry collection The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough. She read her poetry “The Hill We Climb” in 2021 at Joe Biden’s inauguration as president of the United States. Gorman established One Pen One Page, a nonprofit with a youth leadership and writing program, in 2016. She was the first author to have her work highlighted on the XQ Institute’s Book of the Month, a monthly giveaway to share Gen Z’s favorite motivating literature. She has a book agreement with Viking Children’s Books to write two children’s picture books, and she authored an homage to black athletes for Nike.2017 audio of Gorman reading “An American Lyric” Gorman, who has performed on MTV, was the first young poet to launch the Library of Congress’ literary season in 2017. For her September 2017 performance at the Library of Congress, which celebrated Tracy K. Smith’s appointment as the nation’s first Poet Laureate, she composed “In This Place: An American Lyric.” Her poem “In This Place ” was purchased by the Morgan Library and Museum, which put it on exhibit next to Elizabeth Bishop’s creations in 2018. In April 2017, Gorman, who was a student at Harvard, became the first individual to hold the title of National Youth Poet Laureate.

Among the “25 finest and brightest young African-Americans who succeed in the domains of social justice and activism, arts and culture, enterprise and corporate innovation, science and technology, and green innovation,” Gorman was picked as one of The Root magazine’s “Young Futurists” in 2019. She voiced support for Roe v. Wade and abortion rights in a 2019 NowThis News video that also featured a pro-choice poem. In a May 2020 edition of the John Krasinski-hosted web series Some Good News, Gorman had the chance to remotely meet Oprah Winfrey and delivered a graduating address to those who were unable to attend because to the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States.Gorman published “Earthrise,” a poem that addressed the global problem, in 2020.

Gorman is extremely sensitive to sound and suffers from an auditory processing problem. She also struggled with her speech as a child, according to . When I was quoting Marianne Deborah Williamson to my mother at a young age, I came to the realization that “Our biggest fear is not that we are inadequate, our worst dread is that we are powerful beyond measure.”” Gorman revealed in 2021 that she used songs as a type of speech therapy while speaking with co-host of CBS This Morning Anthony Mason. She said, “The Hamilton song “Aaron Burr, Sir,” with its abundance of Rs, was my favorite to rehearse. I then declared, “If I can stay up with Leslie on this track, I’ll soon be able to say this R in a poem.””

Gorman completed grades K–12 at New Roads, a private school in Santa Monica.As a senior, she was awarded a college scholarship from the Milken Family Foundation.She majored in sociology at Harvard College, receiving her degree with honors in 2020 and becoming a Phi Beta Kappa member. Gorman studied abroad for a semester in Madrid, Spain, in 2019 with the help of IES Abroad.International recognition for her inauguration poem led to the publication of two of her books as best-sellers and the signing of a management contract for her. Gorman was featured in the “Phenoms” category of Time magazine’s 100 Next list in February 2021, with a bio written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. When Gorman read her poem “Chorus of the Captains” during Super Bowl LV, she made history by becoming the first poet to perform at the Super Bowl.
