Alice Diop is a French photographer and filmmaker who was born in 1979. She has directed several, including documentaries on current French culture and the courtroom drama Saint-Omer (2022). Diop was born in 1979 in the commune of Aulnay-sous-Bois, which is located in the northern part of Paris. Her mother and father, who had moved from Senegal in the 1960s, were factory workers, with her mother working as a cleaner and her father using industrial paint.
A member of the commune’s Cité des 3000 housing project, Diop was one of five siblings and lived there until he was ten. She attended the Sorbonne for her studies in African colonial history, the University of Évry for her studies in visual sociology, and La Fémis for her studies in documentary filmmaking. Diop’s early films have been characterized as “honest, slightly didactic portraits of marginalized populations,” according to one description.
For her debut documentary, La Tour du Monde (2005), she returned to Aulnay-sous-Bois fifteen years after leaving the town to record the cultural variety of the region where she had grown up. She followed an aspiring actor from Aulnay in her documentary “La Mort de Danton,” released in 2011.2016 when Diop released two films. La Permanence, also known as “On Call” in English, is the location of the first story, which takes place at a medical clinic in Paris that serves immigrants.
The second documentary that year, titled “Towards Tenderness” or “Vers la tendresse,” featured interviews with four young men who discuss the challenges of finding love and intimacy and the concept of masculinity. It wasn’t until 2020 that Diop released his second documentary, Nous (“We”). It signified a widening of Diop’s topic to include a more significant swath of French society since it focused on suburban life along the RER B train line outside Paris.
Following the film’s selection as a Critic’s Pick, The New York Times commented that it “points to the impossibility of portraiture itself, whether of a life, a people, or a nation.”Saint-Omer, Diop’s first feature film, had its world premiere in 2022 at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. It was successful enough to win the Grand Jury Prize and the Luigi De Laurentiis Award for the first film at the festival.
The real-life trial of Fabienne Kabou, a Senegalese immigrant who abandoned her daughter, who was only one year old at the time, on a beach to starve to death, served as the inspiration for the film. Diop was present during the trial. Diop produced a movie on the high-profile case during the final arguments of the problem when she and others in the courtroom were impacted. She was fascinated by the story, and she remembers making the decision.
Even though the screenplay, created in collaboration with Amrita David and Marie NDiaye, makes substantial use of court transcripts, it presents the event from the perspective of a courtroom observer, portrayed by Kayije Kagame and is comparable to Diop. Céline Sciamma, the director of Saint-Omer, referred to it as a “cinema poem” comparable to Jeanne Dielman’s film 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975). Saint-Omer received a lot of positive feedback.
He described the film as an “intellectually charged, emotionally wrenching story about the inability of storytelling—literary, legal, or cinematic—to do justice to the violence and strangeness of human experience.” A. O. Scott, who writes for The New York Times, referred to the film as a Critic’s Pick. In 2023, a group from Slate voted Saint-Omer as one of the 75 finest films directed by black filmmakers.
It was not to make a movie that the French filmmaker Alice Diop went to the trial of Fabienne Kabou, a mother who had abandoned her baby, who was 15 months old at the time, on a beach and allowed her to die. According to what she claimed in a recent interview, she had an “unusual identification” with the individual at the heart of the case in 2016. This individual, like her, was a Black lady of Senegalese origin with a mixed-race kid. She thought the tragedy had a “nearly mythological dimension” to it.
“Saint-Omer,” the documentary filmmaker’s first foray into narrative movies, is the product of her feelings when sitting in that courtroom. The film received the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize and the distinction of being the finest debut picture when it was shown at the Venice Film Festival the previous year. This was equivalent to the film in second place at the famous event. It is currently on the international feature film category’s shortlist for the Academy Award.
Among the films that France has submitted for consideration for the Academy Award, Diop is the only Black woman to direct a movie. Two of Chazelle’s earlier films that won Academy Awards, namely La La Land (2016) and First Man (2018), were the ones that inaugurated the festival on the Lido. “This city of the arts, filled with artists such as Tintoretto, Titian, and Veronese, transforms into a city of film for ten days every year, and I am both honored and happy to be selected to chair the jury for this year’s festival.
