Alexander Van der Bellen Bio

Born on the 18th of January 1944, Alexander Van der Bellen is now serving as the President of Austria. Before entering politics, he worked as a professor of economics at the University of Vienna. After entering politics, he became the spokesperson for the Austrian Green Party.
In 1958, Van der Bellen, along with his parents, became a naturalized citizen of Austria. His parents were refugees from the occupation of the Baltic nations, and they were of Russian and Estonian descent. Van der Bellen was born in Austria. He is a descendant of the noble Van der Bellen family, which originated in the region that was then known as the Russian Empire. His patrilineal Dutch lineage dates back to the 18th century.

Between the years 1994 and 2012, he served as both the head of the Green Party and the leader of its parliamentary group. During that time, he was a member of the National Council, representing the Green Party while it was present. In the presidential election that took place in 2016, he competed as a candidate who was officially independent and was sponsored by the Green Party. He came second out of six candidates in the first round, and then he won the second round against Norbert Hofer, who was a member of the Freedom Party.

Because absentee ballots were wrongly tabulated too early, the results of the second round of voting were nullified by the Constitutional Court on July 1st, before he was scheduled to be sworn into office. This necessitated the election to be re-held.In the subsequent election, which took place on December 4, 2016, he emerged victorious, capturing around 54% of the vote. After describing himself as a centrist liberal, Van der Bellen is a supporter of measures that are socially liberal and environmentally friendly. He is a supporter of the European Union and a proponent of European federalism, as he explains in his book publication from 2015.

Throughout the presidential race, he appealed to the political center, and as a result, he received support from the leaders of both the Social Democratic Party and the People’s Party, which is a conservative institution. In the history of the European Union, Van der Bellen has the distinction of being the second Green president of a nation, following in the footsteps of Raimonds Vējonis of Latvia. Furthermore, he is the first Green president to attain direct election by popular vote. His patrilineal ancestors left the Netherlands and settled in the Russian Empire during the 18th century. Van der Bellen was born in the Netherlands.

A portion of his family managed to flee the Bolsheviks and make their way to Estonia, which had just gained its independence, during the Russian Civil War, which lasted from 1917 to 1922. Aleksander von der Bellen, Van der Bellen’s grandfather, had already held the position of head of the civilian provincial administration in Pskov before this circumstance. The family changed their name from von der Bellen to Van der Bellen when they began living in Estonia. Van der Bellen’s father, Alexander, wed his Estonian mother, Alma Sieboldt, at Kihelkonna, Saaremaa, Estonia, in 1931. At the time, the couple was living in Estonia. Following that, his father also completed the process of obtaining Estonian citizenship.

An invasion, occupation, and annexation of Estonia by the Soviet Union took place in the year 1940. During February or March 1941, Van der Bellen’s father, mother, and elder sister Vivian-Diana relocated to Nazi Germany. Per the German–Soviet Frontier Treaty, they were admitted as the so-called Volksdeutsche. Through the city of Lauksargiai, which was once known as Laugszargen, Memelland, and a German resettlement camp located in Werneck in Wurzburg, Van der Bellen’s parents relocated to Vienna. It was in Vienna that their son Alexander was born in 1944 and subsequently baptized into the Lutheran Church.

As the Red Army moved closer to Vienna, the family made their escape to the Kauner Valley in Tyrol. It was there that his father eventually resumed his career as a merchant. In 1954, once Van der Bellen had finished his elementary schooling in Innsbruck, he transferred to the Academic Grammar School in Innsbruck, also known as the Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck. It was there that he received his A-Level graduation in 1962. As was the case with his parents, Van der Bellen had Estonian citizenship up to this point; nevertheless, he eventually acquired Austrian citizenship around the year 1958. Van der Bellen asserts that he did not go through the required amount of time spent serving in the Austrian Armed Forces.

The first time he went through the process of getting a medical examination for military duty, he was deemed unfit (untangling). He went through the process again. Nevertheless, he was able to pass the second one with flying colors. He was able to take several breaks later on, both because of his education and because of his marriage. As a result of his later teaching, Van der Bellen was no longer required to report for military duty once some time had passed.

In 1966, Van der Bellen received a master’s degree in economics from the University of Innsbruck, where he had previously studied economics. His dissertation, which was titled “Kollektive Haushalte und gemeinwirtschaftliche Unternehmungen: Probleme ihrer Koordination” (which translates to “Collective households and public-service enterprises: Problems of their coordination”), earned him the title of “Doctor Rerum Oeconomicarum” (Dr. rerum oeconomicarum) in the year 1970.

During the years 1968 to 1971, he worked as a scientific assistant to Clemens August Andreae at the Institute for Public Finance at the University of Innsbruck. Subsequently, he worked as a research fellow at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) from 1972 to 1974. During his time as a university assistant at the Institute for Public Finance at the University of Innsbruck, he was able to get the qualification of university lecturer (habilitation) in the year 1975.

It was with the Turkish economist Murat R. Sertel that he developed a connection. Together, they collaborated on decision and preference theories, and they went on to publish several publications and discussion papers. In 1976, Van der Bellen secured a position as an associate professor at the University of Innsbruck, where he stayed until 1980.
