Hollinghurst was born on May 26, 1954, in Stroud, Gloucestershire. He went to the prestigious Dorset school, Canford. Hollinghurst earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Magdalen College, Oxford in 1975 and a Master of Letters from Oxford University in 1979.
His thesis focused on gay authors Ronald Firbank, E. M. Forster, and L. P. Hartley. He began his academic career as a lecturer at Oxford’s Magdalen College in the late 1970s and then taught at Somerville College and Corpus Christi College. From 1981 to 1982, he taught at University College London, and from 1985 to 1990, he served as deputy editor of The Times Literary Supplement.
Critic Jennifer Reese of Entertainment Weekly called the story “a sweeping and melancholy elegy to the 1980s” and the first work of homosexual fiction to receive the award. Though Hollinghurst began his career as a poet, it was the skill with which he fashioned the prose of his novels that garnered him the acclaim of critics.
intimate sex exchange. In the eyes of most critics, the shining star of his work was not the narrative or the characters, but his command of the English language. According to Geraldine Bedell of the London Observer, “part of the pleasure of Hollinghurst’s writing resides in the contrast between the flawlessly regulated prose and the pleasurably filthy things characters get up to.”
Hollinghurst was born in 1954 and spent his formative years as an only kid in the charming town of Cirencester, central England. His dad worked in banking, and he got him hooked on classical music. Hollinghurst attended graduate school at Oxford University after graduating with a degree in literature from Magdalen College in 1975.
As an undergraduate, he was awarded Oxford’s Newdigate Prize for poetry, a distinguished award that has been given out since 1806 and whose previous recipients include Oscar Wilde and John Ruskin. He began his professional career as a lecturer in English at Oxford’s Magdalen College and went on to hold positions at Somerville and Corpus Christi. After relocating to London in the early 1980s, he was engaged as an assistant editor for the esteemed Times Literary Supplement, despite having originally planned to teach English at the University of London.
Hollinghurst published a volume of poetry, Secret Chats with Boys, in 1982 while also reviewing dozens of books for the Times Literary Supplement. However, he hit a wall after signing a deal with Faber Publishing in 1985 to write another book of poetry and instead began focusing on fiction. Andrew Motion, the future Poet Laureate of Britain and a buddy from his time at Oxford, was the editorial director at Chatto at the time. Hollinghurst’s debut work was purchased by Windus, another prestigious London publishing business.
That first book, 1988’s The Swimming-Pool Library, made waves thanks in part to its explicit sexual material. The novel takes place in London in the summer of 1983 and centers on Will Beckwith, a 25-year-old budding writer who is also coming to terms with his sexuality. With the help of his affluent grandpa, Beckwith accepts a job ghostwriting the memoirs of an older gay man, Lord Charles Nantwich. Will’s grandfather was a famous public prosecutor before he retired, and Will is shocked to find that his grandfather had had Nantwich jailed on false charges of “male immorality” in an era when such behavior was criminalized. Beckwith learns that even in the present day, when a friend of his gets detained on identical charges, gay men are still the focus of occasional abuse.
The events in The Swimming-Pool Library took place in the early 1980s, before the spread of AIDS among the LGBT community. As Will dives deeper into London’s underground homosexual male subculture, the novel is permeated with a hedonistic environment, but it is counterbalanced by the influence of Thatcherism, the political movement spearheaded by Britain’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. Once Thatcher and her fellow Conservative Party members were elected in 1979, Britain underwent a significant transformation. Thatcher’s policies, which included lowering taxes and encouraging entrepreneurship at the expense of the working poor, caused upheaval in Britain, but they also contributed to the rise of a new middle class there. Her Conservative Party was re-elected in a landslide in 1983, marking the final chapter of The Swimming-Pool Library.
A review by Sunday Times critic Edmund White gushed, “writing is enviably fluid and sonorously scored,” praising Hollinghurst’s style in his first novel. This is not an example of experimental prose. On the contrary, it is an excellent example of traditional English prose, being “capable, friendly, and wonderfully efficient.” It is the best book on gay life ever written by an English author,” White added. To have such a summery book come out in the midst of this winter of greatest discontent is thrilling. Perhaps White was making a reference to Section 28 of the 1988 Local Government Act, a controversial legislation that targeted the gay community.
It was worded so that no community activity or effort could get public financing if it was determined that its purpose was to promote same-sex relationships.
Hollinghurst didn’t publish another novel for a long time. He held the position of poetry editor at the Times Literary Supplement in the meantime. A Folded Star was published by Chatto & Windus in 1994. Again, it is centered on a gay male protagonist who struggles with his own sexuality. When Edward Manners moves to Belgium to teach English as a second language, he carries with him his drinking problem and his love for secret, anonymous sex in semi-public facilities.
