Alan Charles Jardine is a musician from the United States who was a co-founder of the band Beach Boys. He was born on September 3, 1942. He is best known for his role as the band’s rhythm guitarist and for occasionally singing lead vocals on singles such as “Help Me, Rhonda” (1965), “Then I Kissed Her” (1965), “Cottonfields” (1970), and “Come Go with Me” (1978). He joined the band in 1964 and has been a member ever since. In 1978, his song “Lady Lynda” was also one of the group’s songs that reached the top 10 in the UK. Other Beach Boys songs such as “I Know There’s an Answer” (1966), “Vegetables” (1967), and “From There to Back Again” (2012) all feature Jardine on lead vocals.

Virginia and Donald Jardine welcomed their second child, Alan Charles Jardine, at Lima Memorial Hospital in Lima, Ohio. He was the younger of the couple’s two children. After having spent the first years of his youth in Lima, the family relocated to Rochester, New York, where the man’s father took a position with Eastman Kodak and also taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He remained in Lima for the remainder of his boyhood. After that, he and his older brother Neal relocated with his family to California, first to San Francisco and subsequently to Hawthorne. Both of these cities are in the state of California.
While attending Hawthorne High School, he played fullback on the football team and quickly became friends with Brian Wilson, who was the backup quarterback. Jardine was also in the audience when Brian and his brother Carl Wilson performed during a school assembly. Following his time spent as a student at Ferris State University during the 1960–1961 school year, Jardine enrolled in classes at El Camino College the following year, in 1961.
When he got there, he ran into Brian again, and as the two of them were working on some harmony ideas together in the college’s music room, he brought up the idea of starting a band for the first time. Jardine’s major passion in music was folk, and he learned to play the banjo and guitar expressly so that he could play folk songs. At the beginning of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson wanted to steer the band in a folk direction, but the other members of the band prevailed in their decision to play rock ‘n’ roll instead.
Jardine was a talented string instrumentalist who played stand-up bass on the Beach Boys’ first album, “Surfin'” (1961). This was the group’s debut single. It was at the request of Brian Wilson that he officially rejoined the Beach Boys in the summer of 1963, and he worked with guitarist David Marks the band until October 1963, when Marks resigned from the Beach Boys after having a disagreement with the band’s manager, Murry Wilson. Jardine played double bass on the Beach Boys’ first record for Candix Records, “Surfin’,” but he left the band a few months later, in February 1962. This song was also the band’s last record for Candix Records.
It is a frequent misunderstanding that Jardine left to concentrate on his dental education. In point of fact, Jardine did not even submit an application to dentistry school until 1964. The reason he quit the band was not only because of creative disagreements but also because he believed that the newly constituted group would not be an economic success. After David Marks’ departure from the Beach Boys in 1963, he rejoined the band on a full-time basis.
After making his debut with a lead vocal performance on “Christmas Day” from The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album in 1964, Jardine went on to score a number-one hit with “Help Me, Rhonda.” Jardine was the one who suggested that the Beach Boys record a cover of the folk traditional “Sloop John B.” Brian Wilson was the one who arranged and produced the track for the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds album, which was released in 1966.
When Brian Wilson decided to call it quits as a touring musician around the end of 1964, Al Jardine was promoted to the more prominent role of lead vocalist for the band’s live performances. Jardine began his career as a songwriter with his contributions to the Friends album. He went on to become a songwriter for the Beach Boys, writing or co-writing a number of songs for the band. Early in 1973, “California Saga: California” from the Holland album reached number one on the charts.
The song “Lady Lynda” that Jardine wrote in 1978 for his first wife earned a spot in the Top Ten on the chart in the United Kingdom. In the years following the release of the Surf’s Up album, Al became increasingly involved in the production responsibilities that Carl Wilson was responsible for for the Beach Boys. On the M.I.U. Album (1978), for which he shared production credits with Ron Altbach, was a primary architect of both the album’s concept and its substance, along with Mike Love. As was the case with “Lady Lynda” and his 1969 rewriting of Lead Belly’s “Cotton Fields,” “Come Go with Me” and “Peggy Sue” on the M.I.U. Album were both productions by Jardine. The former of them was a hit in the United Kingdom, while the latter was not.
Jardine was the driving force behind the Beach Boys’ performance of a cover version of “California Dreamin'” by the Mamas and the Papas, which featured Roger McGuinn and peaked at No. 8 on the adult contemporary chart of the Billboard music publication in 1986. The music video that went along with it received extensive broadcasts all over the world and was put on heavy rotation on MTV. The film featured all of the surviving members of the Beach Boys, as well as John Phillips and Michelle Phillips, two of the three surviving members of the Mamas and the Papas (Denny Doherty was on the East Coast and declined), and Roger McGuinn, a former member of the Byrds.
