Bethany Hamilton was born on the Hawaiian island of Kauai on 8 February 1990 to Tom and Cheri Hamilton. She is the younger sister of Noah and Timmy.Her entire family was passionate about surfing, and her parents began teaching her to surf before she was five. On 31 October 2003, she joined her best friend Alana Blanchard and her family for a morning surf along Kauai’s Tunnels Beach. She was relaxing on her surfboard with her left arm dangling in the sea when a tiger shark suddenly rose from beneath the sea and attacked her.
She was stunned by the attack and horrified to discover that the shark had bitten off her left arm just below the shoulder. Alana and her father immediately rushed to her aid, and she was brought to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
On her trip to the hospital, she had lost a lot of blood and felt numb. While she was being transported to the hospital, one of the paramedics held her hand and reassured her that God would take care of her.
Initially, physicians advised her parents that she had a poor chance of survival. However, she battled valiantly against all odds and survived. She was profoundly shaken by this occurrence but refused to let it overcome her passion for surfing.
She returned to surfing within weeks of the attack. She returned to surfing with a custom-made board that was longer, thicker, and fitted with a grip for her right arm. However, she eventually mastered the usage of ordinary equipment.
On 10 January 2004, she competed in her first big competition after the attack. Returning to competitive terrain energised her, and she was resolved not to let her impairment obstruct her career objectives.
Later that year, in 2004, she published her book, ‘Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Boar’. The book quickly gained widespread popularity and became a best-seller.Following the popularity of her book, she became a celebrity and featured as a guest on a number of television shows, including ‘The Biggest Loser’, ’20/20′, ‘Good Morning America’, ‘Inside Edition’, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’, ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’, and ‘The Today Show’.
In 2011, a biographical drama film titled ‘Soul Surfer’ was published, based on her memoirs ‘Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board. Anna Sophia Robb portrayed Bethany in the film, while Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid portrayed her parents. The crowd responded positively to the film.In 2004, she earned the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete and the Courage Teen Choice Award.In 2005, she received the United States Sports Academy’s “Mildred Babe Dirdrikson-Zacharias Courage Award.”
