Willie Aames, who is also known by his stage name Willie Ames, is a well-known American actor, film and television director, television producer, and screenwriter. He was born Albert William Upton on July 15, 1960. The roles that brought him the most fame were playing Tommy Bradford, one of the children of Tom Bradford, on the 1970s television series Eight Is Enough, TJ Latimer in Family, Buddy Lembeck on the 1980s sitcom Charles in Charge, and the title character in the direct-to-video series Bibleman.
He is best known for these roles. Aames got his start in the entertainment industry as a youngster in the late 1960s making appearances on television programs such as Gunsmoke, The Wonderful World of Disney, Adam-12, and The Courtship of Eddie’s Father. On the ABC television show The Odd Couple, which began airing in 1971, he was the first actor to portray the position of Leonard Unger, the son of Felix Unger. Leif Garrett would eventually assume the role of Leonard Unger. In the cartoon series Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, which debuted the following year, he provided his voice for the role of Jamie Boyle.
He appeared as a guest on a number of different television programs, one of which being The Waltons. In the 1974 miniseries Benjamin Franklin, he gave the performance of a young Benjamin Franklin, at 12 years old. The year after that, he had a recurring role on the television series The Swiss Family Robinson.
In the comedy-drama Eight Is Enough, which he starred in from 1977 to 1978, he played the part of Tommy Bradford. During this time, he was a member of a band known as Willie Aames & Paradise, in which he served as both the lead vocalist and the guitarist. The band first got its start while Aames was still a student at the junior high school level, and it finally signed a recording deal with CBS Custom Label. Scavenger Hunt was the film in which Aames made his debut as an actor during this time period. After the series was canceled in 1981, Aames went on to star in a number of films, such as Zapped!, in which he starred opposite Scott Baio, and Paradise, in which he starred with Phoebe Cates.
Aames had previously portrayed the part of Robbie Hamlin on the ABC serial opera The Edge of Night before taking on the role of Buddy Lembeck in the 1984 television series Charles in Charge. Between the years 1983 and 1985, he provided the voice for Hank in the Dungeons & Dragons animation. Aames went on to host the game program The Krypton Factor after the cancellation of Charles in Charge in the year 1990. Aames has gone through three different marriages. In 1979, Aames wed Vicki Weatherman, and the couple went on to have one son, Christopher. In 1986, he tied the knot with Maylo McCaslin, and the couple eventually had a daughter named Harleigh Jean. Aames married Winnie Hung in 2014.
Throughout his life, Aames has struggled with an addiction to alcohol. Before departing to devote more time to his family, Aames portrayed Bibleman in the Christian superhero series that was shown on direct-to-video beginning in 1995 and continuing until 2003. Robert T. Schlipp took over in his stead when he resigned.
The year 2010 was a turning point in Aames’ professional life when he started working for Regent Seven Seas Cruises in the capacity of Cruise Director. Subsequently, he worked for Oceania Cruises and Viking Cruises, but in 2016, he went back to acting. Aames and Buckley both went to their individual social media accounts on Sunday, the day the news came that “Eight Is Enough” star Adam Rich had gone away, in order to express their respects and pay homage to their buddy. “This morning Winnie woke me up with the heartbreaking news of Adam Rich’s passing,” Aames said on Facebook. “I’m devastated. Adam was more to us than just a coworker. He was in many ways my only sibling of the same age. A companion for all of life.”
He accompanied his kind remarks with a series of photographs that showed Rich at the age he was while the program was running. The series concluded with a photograph of the two of them, together with Dick Van Patten and Grant Goodeve. He stated in the caption that “during the past few years Adam had dreams of reviving his career.”
Aames took on the role of Thomas “Tommy” Bradford Jr., the second-youngest son in a family with a total of eight kids, while Rich took on the role of Nicholas Bradford, the youngest of the Bradford brood. Between 1977 through 1981, the program aired for a total of five seasons on ABC. She went on to say, “Throughout all of these years, Adam and I have continued to be friends.” I have always placed a significant amount of value on his love and support. The news of his passing that I heard this morning has left me in a state of disbelief. My heart is broken for all of you, and please accept my sincere sympathies and love. In recent years, Adam has made it his mission to serve as a source of motivation for those who are dealing with mental and emotional diseases. I’m going to miss him very much.”
Buckley, who co-starred with the actor, also offered their respects. She shared on her Instagram account a number of images with the caption, “These are some of my favorite photos with him.” The photos included both the two of them acting out their respective roles as well as some more recent shots of the two of them. “Adam Rich was light and my young pal for the four seasons that I was blessed to work with him on ‘Eight Is Enough.'” I admired him and had a lot of fun acting beside him in the sequences we shared on the program,” she stated in her letter. “He was incredibly kind, hilarious, and natural in his delivery. He gave a great deal of happiness not just to those of us working on the performance but also to the audience.
