Valerie Mahaffey is a well-known American character actress as well as a producer. She was born on June 16, 1953. She got her start in the entertainment industry as the lead character in the NBC daytime soap opera The Doctors (1979–1981), for which she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1980.

Mahaffey was born on the Indonesian island of Sumatra to a Canadian mother and a Texan father who had met in the Canadian province of New Brunswick.
When Mahaffey was 16 years old, her family relocated to Austin, Texas, and she attended Austin High School until she graduated. She made her debut on Broadway in the musical Rex after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas in Austin in 1975. Between the years 1979 and 1981, Mahaffey was a regular cast member on the daytime soap opera The Doctors.
For her work on the show, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1980. In the film Women of Valor, which she starred in back in 1986, she played one of the imaginary characters. The film depicted the roles that women played in the Philippines during World War II. In addition, Mahaffey appeared as a co-star in the cult classic satirical television miniseries Fresno in the year 1986. Fresno was a parody of popular television soap operas of the time.

In the film National Lampoon’s Senior Trip from 1995, she played the role of Tracy Milford, and in the film Jungle 2 Jungle from 1997, she played the role of Jan Kempster. In 1999, she appeared in the medical drama ER in a recurring role. She had a supporting role in the movie Seabiscuit, which was released in 2003.
In 2009, she was a guest star on the Showtime comedy series United States of Tara for a total of seven episodes. Between the years 2011 and 2013, she made guest appearances on Glee playing the role of Emma Pillsbury’s mother. In 2013, Mahaffey appeared as Fran Horowitz in the TNT medical drama Monday Mornings, which was canceled after a short run. It has been announced that she is one of the candidates for consideration in the category of Best Supporting Actress for the 2021 Academy Awards. In the latter part of the year 2020, Mahaffey was given a recurring role in the crime drama series Big Sky, which was shown on ABC.
