Tom Merritt Bio

American journalist, author, and broadcaster Thomas Andrew Merritt is noted for his expertise in the field of technology. Tom Merritt was born on June 28, 1970, and he is currently famous for hosting several podcasts. He previously worked as a co-host for the TWiT.tv show Tech News Today. Before that, he was the executive editor at CNET and the man behind the popular daily podcast Buzz Out Loud. He currently hosts a number of programs, including the Daily Tech News Show, Cordkillers, and Sword and Laser. Merritt’s father was a food scientist on the Coffee-Mate team, and he was born in Greenville, Illinois.

In addition to Merritt, her mother was a food scientist. Merritt received his undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his master’s degree in communications from the University of Texas in Austin. Merritt got his start in the radio industry in 1986 as a disc jockey for the country music station WGEL in Greenville, Illinois. He was an NPR intern for the 1993–1994 school year, working on the Morning Edition show.

From 1999 to 2004, he served as executive web producer for TechTV in San Francisco. He also presented a radio show for TechTV from 1999 to 2003. In 2004, Merritt joined the CNET team. With Rafe Needleman, he co-hosted a column and podcast about consumer technology in addition to their duties as co-hosts of the popular show Buzz Out Loud with Molly Wood. He also presented the tech assistance call-in show CNET Live with fellow editor Brian Cooley, and he was the host of the show CNET Top 5.

The TWiT Network hired Merritt on a full-time basis as a host on June 1, 2010, after he announced on April 16 that he would be quitting his role as co-host of Buzz Out Loud. As of the fourteenth of May, 2010, his primary focus at TWiT would be a new daily show called Tech News Today, which he announced on the final episode of Buzz Out Loud. Before joining TWiT, Merritt worked closely with Leo Laporte’s network as a former colleague at TechTV. Before becoming a full-time employee at TWiT, Merritt was a frequent guest and relief host on the show.

He and Roger Chang also host a general conversation podcast called East Meets West, and it was discussed on TWiT Live. On June 1, 2010, we released the inaugural issue of Tech News Today. Regular co-hosts included Sarah Lane, Iyaz Akhtar, and Jason Howell, and Merritt was one among them. Two episodes created by Scott Johnson’s Frogpants Studios were among the things Merritt brought with him to TWiT. On the premiere episode of Fourcast, broadcast on July 7, 2009, Merritt and Johnson welcomed listeners into a “virtual fireside setting” to speculate on the future.

While Frogpants Studios continues to produce the other episodes of Current Geek, Current Geek Weekly serves as a companion podcast. Geek culture news and events are discussed every week. On the Frog Frog Network, Merritt kept popping up on Scott Johnson and Brian Ibbott’s podcast The Morning Stream every Wednesday for a piece called Tom’s Tech Time. On November 10, 2010, FrameRate made its official premiere to the TWiT audience, making it Merritt’s second new show there.

Co-hosting the event with magician and NSFW podcast presenter Brian Brushwood was Merritt, who specializes in video in all of its forms (television, film, and the Internet). TWiT premiered its newest show, Triangulation, on January 20, 2011. Each episode involves an interview with a notable individual in the technology world, and Merritt serves as a co-host alongside Leo Laporte. Leaving the show in July 2012 because he “wanted to work on other projects,” he was quoted as saying. Since its inception on February 4, 2008, Merritt has presided over the virtual science fiction and fantasy book club known as Sword & Laser. He now co-hosts the show with a former CNET coworker, Veronica Belmont. A new show of his, slated for Revision 3, premiered on Tom’s Top 5 on June 22, 2010. The program featured a weekly countdown of the Top 5 lists every Tuesday up to November 1, 2011.

After that, he hosted a show for TechRepublic (a subsidiary of CNET) that was quite similar to CNET’s Top 5. Frame Rate co-host Brian Brushwood’s Revision3 show Scam School featured a guest appearance from Merritt in its first two episodes. Merritt and Molly Wood debuted their podcast, It’s a Thing, on March 3, 2013. According to the podcast’s description, it originated as an idea in Molly Wood’s head and eventually became a regular feature on the CNET program Gadgets. They started the popular podcast Buzz Out Loud shortly after the turn of the century and co-hosted it for several years.

Reports of worker suicides and unsafe working conditions at the Foxconn facility in China prompted calls from consumer organizations in 2012 for a boycott of Apple products. The factory is in China. Technology expert Merritt responded, “Boycotts of Apple might be good to nudge Apple into doing something to improve conditions, but you’re going to have to boycott buying electronics if you really wanted to punish China.” Merritt has been following technological developments closely since 2005. I’m not convinced that’s what’s required in this circumstance.

Merritt hypothesized that “the fact that people who are gainfully employed are in some way less likely to commit suicide” could explain the reduced prevalence at Foxconn. According to an infographic he referenced from Forbes, the suicide rate at Foxconn is lower than the national average in China. Foxconn reportedly has a lower rate of 18%. This data was used by Merritt to back up his assertion. It’s likely that reasons other than the plant’s working circumstances are to blame for the high number of employee suicides.
