Thema Bryant-Davis Bio

Thema S. Bryant was born in 1974, and she is currently the director of the Culture and Trauma Research Laboratory at Pepperdine University, where she also teaches psychology. Her current position was just promoted from assistant director. Pepperdine University’s Department of Psychology is fortunate to have her on staff. Her field of investigation examines not just the consequences of trauma on individuals but also the effects of trauma on society as a whole when oppression is present.

She was victorious in the election held in 2023 to determine who would lead the American Psychological Association as President. Bryant is a minister’s daughter because both of her parents are in the ministry. Throughout her childhood, she watched others in her community approaching her father for advice and direction. This was something she did herself. Because of the ongoing civil conflict in Liberia, she was brought to Baltimore when she was just a teenager after being forcibly removed from her own country.

Following the completion of the required coursework, she was awarded a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Duke University. Her doctoral dissertation was on the topic of recovery methods that were utilized by African American adults who had survived childhood abuse. She went on to work for the Victims of Violence Program at Harvard Medical School, where she was employed after accepting a postdoctoral research position there. She made the move there. After that, Bryant joined the SHARE Program at Princeton University. While there, she oversaw a number of initiatives designed to combat sexual assault and harassment on campus. She worked as the SHARE coordinator for a total of three years, during which time she participated in the training of staff members on LGBT-related prejudice as well as culturally appropriate therapies.

In 2005, Bryant made the move from California State University, Northridge to California State University, Long Beach. She remained there for a total of four years, from 2005 until 2007 when she was assigned to her current job as Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University. She began her tenure there in the same year. In the course of her research, she investigates the traumatic effects of oppression in both its structural and interpersonal manifestations.

Bryant is the host of the podcast titled “Homecoming,” which discusses various issues related to mental health. She was victorious in the election held in 2023 to determine who would lead the American Psychological Association as its President. Bryant was chosen for the position of President of the American Psychological Association’s Society for the Psychology of Women. This is a division of the American Psychological Association. She represented the American Psychological Association as their delegate at the United Nations.

At the United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, and Xenophobia, which took place in 2001, she voiced her opposition to various types of intolerance, including racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and other forms. In this chapter of our Great Leaders Series, we would like to pay respect to the individual who led the Society for the Psychology of Women throughout the academic year of 2010-2011 while serving as president at that time. She holds the record for being the youngest person to ever hold the position of president in the SPW division’s history.

Dr. Bryant received all of his degrees in psychology from Duke University, including a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in clinical psychology, and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. African and African-American studies was another degree that he earned there. The year 1998 marked the beginning of her employment at the Duke Psychology Clinic when she was given the position of Clinical Coordinator. Between 1999 and 2000, Dr. Bryant worked at The Cambridge Hospital, which is part of the Harvard Medical Center, as part of her clinical internship for her Ph.D. During that period, she provided trauma survivors receiving treatment at the hospital with counseling on an individual and group basis.

Dr. Bryant emphasized how vital it was to have a mentorship connection with her graduate teachers that was beneficial for both parties involved. Dr. Susan Roth, who was the chair of her dissertation committee, gets the credit for educating her on effective research methods. She attributes her awareness of these procedures to Dr. Roth. Dr. Bryant wanted to make sure that Dr. Roth knew how grateful he was to him for helping him develop an interest in research. She was a trauma psychologist in addition to being a feminist scholar, and she showed me how to respect the voices of women and other people who had survived traumatic experiences within the context of research.

Dr. Bryant started her academic career as an assistant professor at Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, prior to joining the Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources, and Education (SHARE) program at Princeton University in 2001. SHARE stands for the Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources, and Education program. The city of Cambridge, Massachusetts is the location of Lesley College.

During the course of her tenure as the program coordinator for SHARE, which lasted for a total of three years, she was responsible for providing staff training on culturally appropriate and empirically supported interventions, advocacy, education, prevention, and research for victims of sexual harassment and assault, LGBT-related prejudice and violence, and dating violence. During this time, she also trained the staff of the organization on LGBT-related prejudice and violence.
