Bio

James Taylor (born 1948) is a folk singer who appeared on Sesame Street during the 14th season. He performed “That Grouchy Face” (a reworked version of his own “Your Smiling Face”) and “Up on the Roof.” He wrote and performed “Jellyman Kelly” for Sesame Street specifically. Vernon, James Taylor was born on March 12, 1948, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Isaac M. Taylor, his father, was a resident physician at the hospital.  and was born into a wealthy Southern familyGertrude (née Woodard; 1921–2015) studied singing at the New England Conservatory of Music with Marie Sundelius and was an aspiring opera singer before marrying Isaac in 1946.

Taylor is the younger brother of musician Alex Taylor (1947–1993), as well as the older brother of Kate Taylor (born 1949) and Livingston Taylor (born 1950). His younger brother, Hugh (born 1952), was also a musician; Hugh eventually left the music industry and has run The Outermost Inn, a bed-and-breakfast in Aquinnah, Massachusetts, with his wife since 1989.  Taylor and his family relocated to Chapel Hill, North Carolin, in 1951, when Isaac accepted a position as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Chapel Hill, the Piedmont, the outlying hills were tranquil, rural, beautiful, but quiet,” James later said. Thinking about the red soil, the seasons, and the way things smelled down there, I feel like my coming-of-age experience there was more about landscape and climate than people.”  James went to a public elementary school in Chapel Hill.Isaac’s career flourished, but he was frequently away from home on military service, either at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland or as part of Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica in 1955 and 1956. Isaac Taylor later rose through the ranks to become the dean of the UNC School of Medicine from 1964 to 1971. Since 1953, the Taylors have spent their summers on Martha’s Vineyard.

Taylor began learning the guitar in 1960 after taking cello lessons as a child in North Carolina. “My style was a finger-picking style that was meant to be like a piano, as if my thumb were my left hand, and my first, second, and third fingers were my right hand.”  He met Danny Kortchmar, an aspiring teenage guitarist from Larchmont, New York, while on vacation with his family on Martha’s Vineyard. Taylor’s singing had a “natural sense of phrasing, every syllable beautifully in time,” according to Kortchmar, and the two began listening to and playing blues and folk music together. “I had a feeling James had that thing.” Taylor wrote his first song on guitar when he was 14 years old, and he continued to learn the instrument with ease. By the summer of 1963, he and Kortchmar were performing as “Jamie & Kootch” in coffeehouses around the Vineyard.  Taylor enrolled at Milton Academy, a preparatory boarding school in Massachusetts, in 1961. Despite his strong academic performance, he struggled during his junior year, feeling uneasy in the high-pressure college prep environment. “James was more sensitive and less goal-oriented than most students of his day,”

Milton’s headmaster later said.He returned to North Carolina to complete the semester at Chapel Hill High School.  There, he joined a band called The Corsayers (later The Fabulous Corsairs) formed by his brother Alex, playing electric guitar; in 1964, they cut a single in Raleigh with James’s song “Cha Cha Blues” on the B-side Taylor returned to Milton for his senior year, having lost contact with his former school friends in North Carolina, and began applying to colleges to complete his education.  However, he felt he was a part of a “life that [he] was unable to lead,” and he became depressed; he slept 20 hours a day, and his grades plummeted. He checked himself into McLean, a psychiatric hospital in Belmo, in late 1965. with

They enlisted Joel O’Brien, formerly of Kortchmar’s old band King Bees, to play drums, and Taylor’s childhood friend Zachary Wiesner (son of academic Jerome Wiesner) to play bass. After Taylor rejected the idea of naming the band after him, they settled on the name Flying Machine. They performed songs written by Taylor at and about McLean, such as “Knocking ‘Round the Zoo,” “Don’t Talk Now,” and “The Blues Is Just a Bad Dream.”  Taylor romanticised his life in other songs, but he struggled with self-doubt. By the summer of 1966, they were performing regularly at Greenwich Village’s high-visibility Night Owl Cafe, alongside acts like the Turtles and Lothar and the Hand People. Taylor became involved with a diverse group of people and began using heroin, much to Kortchmar’s dismay.  During a hurried recording session in late 1966, the group cut a single, Taylor’s “Night Owl,” which was backed by his “Brighten Your Night with My Day.” It was released on Jay Gee Records, a subsidiary of Jubilee Records, and received some radio airplay in the Northeas, but only charted at No. 102 nationally. Other songs had been recorded during the same session, but Jubilee decided not to release an album. The Flying Machine disbanded after a series of poor-choice appearances outside of New York, culminating in a three-week stay at a failing nightspot in Freeport, Bahamas for which they were never paid.

(A UK band of the same name debuted in 1969 with the hit song “Smile a Little Smile for Me.”) The recordings of the New York band were later released as James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine in 1971.) stay at his apartment. Finally out of money and abandoned by his manager, he made a desperate call to his father one night. Isaac Taylor flew to New York and staged a rescue, renting a car and driving all night back to North Carolina with James and his belongings.Taylor spent six months receiving treatment and making a tentative recovery; he also needed a throat operation to repair vocal cords damaged by singing too loudly He moved to London in late 1967, funded by a small family inheritance, and lived in a variety of neighbourhoods, including Notting Hill, Belgravia, and Chelsea After recording some demos in Soho, his friend Kortchmar gave him his next big break.

Kortchmar used his connection to the King Bees (who once opened for Peter and Gordon) to connect Taylor to Peter Asher. Asher was the A&R director for the Beatles’ newly formed label Apple Records. Taylor gave Ashe a demo tape of songs, including “Something in the Way She Moves,” which he played for Beatles Paul McCartney and George Harrison. McCartney recalls his first impression: “I just heard his voice and his guitar and I thought he was great… and he came and played live, so it was just] McCartney and an uncredited George Harrison appeared on “Carolina in My Mind,” whose lyric “holy host of others standing around me” alluded to the Beatles, and the title phrase of Taylor’s “Something in the Way She Moves” served as the lyrical starting point for Harrison’s classic “Something.”McCartney and Asher enlisted the help of arranger Richard Anthony Hewson to add orchestrations to several of the songs as well as unusual “link” passages between them; the results were mixed, to say the leas

It was his first arena tour of the United Kingdom, and he performed at venues such as Manchester’s MEN Arena and Wembley Arena. Iglesias’ tour concluded with a performance at the newly opened L.A. Live. The tour’s second leg took him all the way through Latin America, from Mexico to Argentina. The song “Can You Hear Me?” by Enrique Iglesias was chosen as the official song of the UEFA Euro 2008 football tournament. He performed the song live at the final on June 29, 2008, in Vienna, Austria.

The song was included on a re-release of Insomniac that was released in certain countries. The album debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart and at number eighteen on the Billboard 200 albums chart overall. It was Iglesias’ second Spanish album to reach the top 20 on the Billboard 200 (Quizás debuted at number twelve in 2002).
