Sting Bio

Sting was born on October 2, 1951, to Audrey and Ernest Matthew Sumner in Wallsend, Northumberland, England. He was the eldest of four sons. Both his father and mother worked in the service industry before they had him. At about the same time that he became obsessed with guitar after receiving one as a gift from a family member, he saw the Queen Mother wave from atop her Rolls-Royce and was inspired to live a glamorous life.

English musician, singer, songwriter, actor, and philanthropist Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, better known by his stage name Sting. Sting, singer, and songwriter for the legendary new-wave band The Police, got his distinctive moniker from the fact that he used to wear a striped jumper that made him look like a bee. Sting, widely regarded as one of the most astute and gifted musicians in the world, pursued his passion for music by playing jazz in his spare time while attending university.

In 1974, he received his big break when the band Last Exit needed a new member. Not long after meeting Stewart Copeland in 1977, Sting left to join what would become The Police with Copeland and Henri Padovani. The band broke up in 1983 after releasing several successful singles and Sting went on to pursue a solo career. Sting’s solo career took off with the success of his early singles like “Englishman in New York” and “Fields of Gold,” and rode the popularity wave he had established with his band The Police. A musician who is still performing today, Sting’s final album, titled “The Last Ship,” was published in 2013, and a musical based on the record debuted on Broadway in 2014. Sting isn’t only a musician; he’s also an activist for the Human Rights movement and other causes.

Sting dabbled with local bands like the River City Jazzmen and the Newcastle Big Band while teaching at St. Paul’s School before striking out on his own in 1974 with his buddy and fellow teacher-in-training Gerry Richardson. Named after Hubert Selby’s grim cult classic “Last Exit from Brooklyn,” which inspired the music of the same name, “Last Exit” is a band’s moniker. Sting’s first foray into songwriting came about during the making of ‘Final Exit. The Band’s popularity skyrocketed in the northeastern circuit, but their 1976 jazz fusion-themed album Last Exit was doomed to fail with the arrival of punk rock.

Towards the tail end of 1976, Sting was approached by Curved Air drummer Stewart Copeland after Copeland saw him perform in Newcastle, and the two ended up forming a band with Henri Padovani. Sting quit his teaching profession and moved away from Newcastle in January 1977 to devote himself full-time to his new band, The Police. The Police won their first Grammy in 1980 for their song “Reggatta de Blanc,” which they recorded in 1979. The album’s two most popular songs, “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon,” were both written by Sting.

While on the road extensively from 1979 to 1983 with the band, Sting made his acting debut in the film Brimstone & Tackle in 1982. He wrote the song “Spread a Little Happiness,” which became his first solo hit, and contributed to the score. Sting’s final album with “The Police,” “Synchronicity,” was released in 1983. The song “Every Breath You Take” became the group’s signature tune and a number-one hit in the United States and the United Kingdom. Following the conclusion of the tour in promotion of this record, Sting decided that the band should take a hiatus, and so his solo career began.

Sting released his first album as a solo artist in 1985 titled “The Dream of the Blue Turtles,” which featured performances by other notable Jazz players. Fans and critics alike agreed that this album amply demonstrated Sting’s superior songwriting and composing skills. Sting surprised his fans by performing with the rest of ‘The Police’ on the 2007 Grammy Awards television broadcast. Sting’s 2013 album, “The Last Ship,” was inspired by his youth.

In 2014, Sting made his debut as a Broadway lyricist and composer with the musical adaptation of this album. Sting has written and composed many hit songs, but “Every Breath You Take” from his 1983 album Synchronicity is his most well-known collaboration with The Police. It spent 8 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and 4 weeks at the top of the UK singles chart, making it the biggest hit in the US and UK in 1983. It was up for three Grammys and ended up taking home two.

On May 1, 1976, Sting wed Irish actress Frances Tomelty. They split up in 1984 after having two kids together. Sting moved in with Trudie Styler, an actress and film producer, after his divorce from his first wife in 1982. They tied the knot in southwestern England on August 22nd, 1992, and now their brood numbers four. Sting, his wife Trudie Styler, and Jean-Pierre Dutilleux established The Rainforest Foundation International in 1989, and together they have sponsored programs protecting a total of 28 million acres of forest in 20 different rainforest countries.

In an exhibition match against chess grandmaster Gary Kasparov in 2000, Sting and his four bandmates all lost within 50 minutes. Sting, whose given name is Gordon Sumner, was raised in Wallsend, Northumberland, England, the eldest son of a milkman and a hairdresser, not far from the city’s shipyards. Sumner had an early fascination with music, but it was some time before he decided to make it his profession. He held a variety of jobs before settling on a career in teaching.

While he was teaching at St. Paul’s First School in Cramlington, he also played bass with the Newcastle Big Band and the Phoenix Jazzmen in Newcastle in his spare time. When he was in the latter group, bandleader Gordon Solomon gave him the moniker “Sting” because of his penchant for wearing yellow and black sweaters.
