Sarah Waters Bio

Sarah Waters was born on the 21st of July 1966. Her novels Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith, both of which are set in Victorian society and include lesbian protagonists, have brought her the lion’s share of her success.

She had a sister while she was growing up alongside her mother Mary, father Ron, and other family members. Her father was an engineer who worked in oil refineries, while her mother stayed at home to take care of the family. She says that her family is “quite ideal,” meaning that they are “extremely safe and nurturing.” Her father, who described himself as “a very creative person,” pushed his daughter to construct things and come up with new ideas.

Following his time at Milford Haven Grammar School, Waters continued his education at the university level, where he received degrees in English literature. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kent, a Master of Arts degree from Lancaster University, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Queen Mary, University of London.

It was in one of these books that she found the inspiration for the title of her debut book: Tipping the Velvet. However, other popular classics of Victorian literature, such as the works of Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, and the Bront sisters, as well as contemporary novelists who combine a keen interest in Victoriana with a post-modernist approach to fiction, such as A.S. Byatt and John Fowles, are also considered to be some of her literary influences. The novel “Nights at the Circus” by Angela Carter was a significant inspiration for her first book, and Waters lauds Carter for her literary style, her “common touch,” and her dedication to feminism.

Before she began writing books, Waters had a career in academia, during which she earned a doctorate and taught. After finishing her doctoral thesis, Waters immediately began writing her first novel. She had the idea to write a novel while she was in the middle of composing her thesis, and she got right to work on it as soon as the dissertation was finished. Her job requires a lot of research, which is one of the things she likes best about it. Waters was a member of the long-running London North Writers Circle for a short period of time. Novelists Charles Palliser and Neil Blackmore were among the group’s previous participants, along with other writers.

She does not mind being categorized as a lesbian author because all of her books, with the exception of The Little Stranger, deal with gay topics, and she writes about lesbians. In her words: “With the novels that I’m writing, I’m writing with a lesbian agenda in mind. It is positioned smack dab in the middle of the volumes.” In spite of the fact that she has a “common agenda in plucking out lesbian stories from areas of history that are viewed as fairly heterosexual,” she considers the lesbian protagonists in her stories “incidental.” This is because of the fact that she is a lesbian herself.

It’s something that you can’t really avoid in your life.” Affinity, the second book written by Waters, was released in 1999, exactly one year after the publication of her first book. The world of Victorian Spiritualism serves as the primary focus of the book, which is also set during the Victorian era. When Waters was putting the finishing touches on her first novel, she was also working on an academic thesis about spiritualism. She wrote the novel Affinity, which chronicles the narrative of the friendship between an upper-middle-class woman and an imprisoned spiritualist. She drew upon her interests in spiritualism, prisons, and the Victorian era for inspiration for this novel.

The previous book and the one that came after it both have a more lighthearted tone than this one does. Writing became less fun for Waters as a result. She described it as a “really dark world” that she was forced to enter on a daily basis.

Both the Stonewall Book Award and the Somerset Maugham Award were bestowed for Affinity. A screenplay adaptation of Affinity was written by Andrew Davies, and the feature film that was subsequently produced had its debut on June 19, 2008, at the Castro Theater as part of the opening night of the Frameline San Francisco LGBT Film Festival. Sally Hawkins, Elaine Cassidy, and Imelda Staunton starred in the BBC One adaptation of Fingersmith when it was adapted into a television series in 2005.

Waters gave their stamp of approval to the modification, stating it “a very high-quality show that was, as one reviewer put it, “very true to the source material.” At points, it was eerily close to the book, which added to the thrill of the experience.” The novel was eventually turned into a film titled The Handmaiden, which was released in 2016, and was directed by Park Chan-wook from South Korea. The film takes place in South Korea during the 1930s.
