Benson was born on January 21, 1956, much to the delight of his Jewish family who lived in Dallas, Texas. His background was very standard for someone who grew up in New York City. His mother, Freda Ann Benson, is also a singer and an actor, in addition to managing marketing for a company. Jerry Segal, his father, is a writer. Benson, his mother, was known to perform his sardonic skits at local bars in the past. Benson adopted his mother’s maiden name at the age of ten and began using it as his stage name. Benson played a significant, though unacknowledged, part in the movie Wait Till Dark.
In 1970, he debuted on “Broadway” for the first time as a composer with the musical production of The Rothschilds. The events depicted in this work of fiction about a Jewish family living in Frankfurt, Germany, around the year 1772, are based on real-life occurrences. The musical was performed again in 1990, this time as an “off-Broadway” production in a theater in New York City.
Also, he directed a number of episodes of the American sitcom “Friends,” which aired from 1994 through 2004. He was a professor at the University of Utah and the University of South Carolina in the United States, in addition to teaching at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Throughout the years 2013 and 2016, he was a professor at the “Indiana University” Bloomington campus. Benson underwent a total of four open-heart surgeries in 1984 as a result of a cardiac valve issue that was discovered in him when he was still a child. Benson used this experience as the inspiration for the “off-Broadway” musical Open Heart, which she also starred in back in 2004.
In 1971, Benson and his co-star Donny Most appeared in an advertisement for a product called “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.” Throughout the period of 35 years, audiences consistently responded well to the play.
In the film “Jory,” which was released in 1972 and is frequently referred to be a “coming-of-age film,” Benson portrayed the role of a young adult. Following this in 1973 was the name “Jeremy.” In 1975, he had starring roles in the films “Death Be Not Proud” and “Lucky Woman.” In the same year, he auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars,” but eventually he was not selected. Mark Hamill was the one who ultimately walked away with it. Benson portrayed the primary character, Billy Joe, in the film “Ode to Billy Joe,” which was released in 1976. This actor played the part of Billy Joe McAllister, a character who committed himself by leaping over a bridge. Billy Joe McAllister was performed by this actor.
In the sports drama “One on One,” which he also had a hand in writing and starred in alongside his father in 1977, he was one of the actors. In the same year, he also appeared in a television movie entitled “The Death of Richie.” In the film Ice Castles, which was released in 1978, Benson had a co-starring role alongside Lynn Holly Johnson, who had won a medal in figure skating in the United States national championships.
In preparation for the movie, he improved his skating skills through rigorous practice. In the 1980 film “Die Laughing,” which was distributed by the ‘Orion’ label, he appeared alongside Linda Grovenor as a co-star. In the same year, Benson also appeared in the film Tribute alongside Jack Lemmon in a co-starring role. Benson played the lead role in the film version of Chaim Potok’s novel of the same name, which he also appeared in. The film was released in 1981. The picture received mixed reviews overall, but many had positive things to say about the actor who portrayed the lead role.
He portrayed Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills in the 1983 film Running Brave. Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000-meter race in the Olympics. Benson lent his voice to the character of “the Beast” in the 1991 animated “Disney” film “Beauty and the Beasts,” which received positive reviews from film critics. He appeared in several of the film’s spin-offs and sequels, playing the same part as “the Beast’s” narrator each time. In the 1990s, he performed the voice for the lead character, JT Marsh, in the popular science fiction cartoon series Exosquad.
He was the producer of both longer films, such as “Modern Love” and “Die Laughing,” and shorter films, such as “Caligo” and “Calypso.”
Benson’s most notable professional accomplishment was earning a position as a university lecturer. He gave lectures at various schools and universities across the United States for a period of twenty years. He was a professor of film at the illustrious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, which today honors him with an institute bearing his name. He has previously held teaching positions at “The University of Utah” and “The University of South Carolina.” On July 11, 1982, Benson tied the knot with rock vocalist Karla DeVito, who had previously been employed in the music industry. The couple is parents to two young people; their daughter’s name is Lyric, and their son’s name is Zephyr.
