Richard Armitage Bio

Richard Crispin Armitage was birth August 22, 1971, in Huncote, Leicestershire, England. His father, John Armitage, was an engineer, and his mother, Margaret Armitage, was a secretary. Richard’s paternal grandfather was also an engineer. He spent his childhood with his elder brother, Chris. Armitage received their education at the ‘Huncote Community Primary School.’ After that, he had his secondary education at Brockington College, a “Church of England” institution with a mixed student body in Enderby, Leicestershire, England.

He was a member of the cello section of the school orchestra and other area organizations. During this period, he was also taught how to play the flute.  Armitage moved to the non-selective, performing arts-focused “Pattison College,” an independent school, after receiving a scholarship from the “Leicestershire Authority.” Pattison College is an institution that does not practice selective admission. 1988, he graduated from the program, completing his A Levels in music and English.

While still a student at the institution, he performed in amateur and professional theatre performances. At Birmingham’s ‘New Alexandra Theatre,’ where ‘The Hobbit’ was being performed on stage, he had a role as an elf. After completing his time at ‘Pattison College,’ Armitage traveled to Budapest, Hungary, where he worked as a member of the ‘Nachtcircus’ for six months. This allowed him to get his ‘Equity Card,’ which allowed him to launch a professional entertainment career in the United Kingdom.

Richard Armitage is an English actor who has worked on stage, in cinema, on television, and as a voice actor. He is best known for his role as Thorin Oakenshield in the film series “The Hobbit.” Armitage, a graduate of the ‘London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art’ (LAMDA), began his career in the entertainment sector with a theatrical performance. After that, he began working on movies and television productions.

His breakout performance came in the BBC drama Sparkhouse, where he played John Standring. His performance as the principal character, John Thornton, in the British television series North & South catapulted him to popularity in that country. After this, he became a household name through his performance as ‘Thorin Oakenshield’ in ‘The Hobbit film trilogy. The television shows ‘Robin Hood,’ ‘Spooks,’ and ‘Hannibal’ were instrumental in his rise to greater prominence.

In recognition of his performance as ‘John Proctor’ in the stage adaptation of ‘The Crucible’ that was shown at ‘The Old Vic. Armitage’ was nominated for an Olivier Award in the category of ‘Best Actor.’ As a good voice actor, he established himself in the industry using his baritone voice. He has narrated several audiobooks in addition to lending his voice to a variety of television and radio shows, as well as advertisements.

Both the online series “Castlevania” and the narrative podcast serial “Wolverine” use him prominently in leading roles as a voice actor.
Armitage began his career in musical theater, working with Kenn Oldfield as an assistant choreographer. During this period, he appeared in musicals like “Cats” and “42nd Street,” among others. While this happened, he also began appearing on stage in dramatic productions such as “Death of a Salesman” and “The Real Thing.”

Armitage, who had reservations about pursuing a career in musical theater, ultimately decided to concentrate on developing his acting skills instead. Before returning to the stage, he participated in a training program at ‘LAMDA’ for three years beginning in 1993. He has roles in ‘Hamlet’ (1998) and ‘The Four Alice Bakers’ (1999) at the ‘Birmingham Repertory Theatre.’ In addition, he participated in the “Royal Shakespeare Company” productions of “Macbeth” (1999–2000) and “The Duchess of Malfi” (2000–2001) during their respective years. In the production of “Use Me as Your Cardigan” by “Charm Offensive” that took place in 2002, he played the role of “Jez.”

In the 2014 production of “The Crucible” at “The Old Vic,” he gave one of the most memorable performances on stage, playing the role of “John Proctor.” Armitage was given the “Broadway World: UK Award” as “Best Leading Actor in a New Production of a Play” for his work in the critically acclaimed and financially successful production that Yal Farber directed in that particular year.

In addition to that, it earned him a nomination for the “Olivier Award” in the “Best Actor” category. Because of ‘The Crucible’s’ widespread appeal, ‘Digital Theatre’ decided to record it. After that, it was sent to movie theaters throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. The digital download was made accessible all around the globe by ‘Digital Theatre’ on March 17, 2015. In the 2016 staging of the play “Love, Love, Love” at the “Laura Pels Theater,” Armitage portrayed the role of “Kenneth.” It was his first performance in a prominent theatrical role on a stage in the United States.

Armitage began appearing in supporting parts in films and television productions while he was still active in the theater. In 2002, he was given his first leading part on television when he was cast as “John Standring” in the drama “Sparkhouse,” shown on BBC. His performance as the textile mill owner John Thornton in the 2004 British historical period drama North & South’ brought him to the public’s attention in the UK.

It was his very first time in the starring role. In the years that followed, he became well-known on television with significant parts in television shows such as ‘The Impressionists’ (2006), ‘Robin Hood’ (2006–2009), and ‘Spooks’ (2008–2010). In recognition of his work as Francis Dolarhyde in the 2015 television series Hannibal, he was awarded the Saturn Award for “Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series.”

His debut as a leading man in a movie was in the British psychological thriller “Frozen,” released in 2005. On October 21, 2010, Peter Jackson announced that Richard Armitage would be playing the role of Thorin Oakenshield in the three-part production of “The Hobbit.” Recognition on a global scale came to him as a result of his roles in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” and “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” all of which were filmed in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. The third and last of these performances was the one that earned him the Saturn Award for “Best Supporting Actor in a Film.”
