Paula Maxine Patton was born on December 5, 1975, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Both of her parents held professional careers in education and law. She has a varied ancestry. Her father is African-American and her mother is Caucasian of European descent.

When she was a child, her family’s home was directly across the street from the 20th Century Fox studio lot.
