Australian author Nikki Gemmell was born on November 17, 1966. Nikki Gemmell has a $5,000,000 net worth as of January 9, 2023. The Bride Stripped Bare, a novel released under a pseudonym in 2003, is widely recognized as her magnum opus because of its frank examination of female sexuality. Prior to the release of The Bride Stripped Bare, Gemmell was openly acknowledged as the book’s author. The book became an international phenomenon and the year’s top seller by an Australian author.
As a result of Fifty Shades of Grey’s popularity, it was re-released in the summer of 2012 in the UK. Shiver, Cleave, Lovesong, The Bride Stripped Bare, and The Book of Rapture are Nikki Gemmell’s novels, while Pleasure: An Almanac for the Heart is her nonfiction work. Her books have sold millions of copies around the world and have been translated into dozens of tongues. She has been called a female Jack Kerouac in France, one of the most creative and fascinating writers of her generation in Australia, and one of the few truly original voices to emerge in the United States in quite some time.
The French literary magazine “Lire” has included her on a list of the fifty most important writers in the world, or those who will have the greatest impact on 21st-century literature. Unique voice and unmistakable style were also considered, in addition to an intriguing take on the topic. Many acclaimed authors, including Rick Moody, Zadie Smith, Jonathan Safran Foer, Rohinton Mistry, Tim Winton, Colum McCann, Michel Faber, and Hari Kunzru, were considered for this honor; Nikki Gemmell was ultimately chosen.
Gemmell thinks she probably had decades more to live. She worked at the New South Wales Parliament House, which she enjoyed, and she had a wonderful family. Nonetheless, construction workers discovered her body in her apartment, with drugs in her stomach and a book by Philip Nitschke nearby. In the months leading up to her death, Gemmell’s mother Elayn went from a well-groomed, lively, independent woman to a heroin addict with suicidal thoughts.
Gemmell’s new book, After, is an account of that time and all that it entailed for her: the weird, the puzzling, and the distressing. However, After is also a tale of moms and their little girls.
Gemmell, who is 50 years old, is a product of a generation that grew up in a supposedly post-feminist society, where women are encouraged to pursue their passions and achieve their full potential. But her mom was only a few years too young to experience the sexual revolution or the second wave of feminism. Gemmell’s mother had three children before she fled the marriage and the suburbs for Sydney in search of a profession and a single life, denying her the early freedoms enjoyed by those born a decade or two later. of the process, she rearranged the letters of her name, going from Elaine to Elayn, a spelling that calls to mind the spirited élan.
Instead, Elayn vented her disappointment in herself to her daughter, who went on to become a writer for the Weekend Australian and the author of 17 novels, including the New York Times bestseller The Bride Stripped Bare.
Gemmell documents the decades of tension in After, showing how Elayn recoils in shame whenever Nikki boasts about her ancestors’ background of mining in the Wollongong area. The conversation begins with Elayn expressing her regret to Nikki about having children. When Nikki gets glasses, Elayn criticizes her and says she looks ugly. Elayn’s first pregnancy was marked by her absence from her daughter’s life. All the little slights and points of pride; the question of who is going to back down first; the enormous amounts of love that are dammed up while approval is withheld; the release of tenderness at the end, when it’s almost too late; these are all things that will ring true for anyone familiar with those family dynamics throughout the book.
It would be fine if this were just a book about the complicated and emotional bonds shared between mothers and daughters. Instead, euthanasia, the police inquiry that followed Elayn’s death, and the growing epidemic of opiate consumption among the elderly are all topics discussed in After.
Elayn, who Gemmell claims never used drugs when she was younger, became become a skilled “doctor hopper.” A botched foot surgery left her in constant pain, necessitating the use of opiate painkillers. As her body got more tolerant to its effects, she “went from doctor to doctor in different suburbs, looking for prescriptions” after her initial use swiftly turned into a habit. Elayn was demoralized and pushed away by the drugs. “She was very glamorous,” adds Gemmell. When I came in [over the last several weeks, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Just stacks of papers and other items that she intended to discard but never made it out the door.
Elayn was hesitant to ask for help from her children because she was afraid that they would put her in a nursing facility. According to the postmortem results, Elayn died of multi-drug toxicity, or what amounts to a drug overdose. Approximately eight years before her death, Elayn had been in touch with the euthanasia campaigner Exit. According to Gemmell, “Her death was a shock to a lot of people.” “Euthanasia was kept a secret from the public. A quick and unexpected contraction into a hell of suffering and gloom ensued. And she could see no way out.
