Bio

On October 5, 1958, in New York City, he became one of three children to African-American father Cyril deGrasse Tyson and Puerto Rican mother Sunchita Marie Tyson. His sociologist father founded Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited, while his gerontologist mother specialized in the elderly. Before deciding on the Bronx High School of Science, he tried out a few other public schools in the Big Apple. He was an outstanding wrestler and team leader as a youngster. A bright and inquisitive young man, he was the head editor of the school’s “Physical Science Journal” and had a lifelong interest in the cosmos. In 1976, he finished school.

His fascination with astronomy eventually became an obsession, and he devoted himself to learning as much as possible about it. In 1980, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Harvard University. He was also a good dancer and kept up his love in wrestling throughout college.

One of today’s most well-known science communicators, Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist and cosmologist who was a member of the 2001 commission that looked into the future of the United States aerospace industry. He earned his Master of Arts in astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin. While he has accomplished much in his field of astrophysics, it is his work as a science communicator that has made him a household figure. For several years, he was the on-air host of the educational news magazine Nova Science Now, where he disseminated scientific information to his viewers. As time passed, he gained not only American but international acclaim as a popular science communicator.

Tyson is a fantastic presenter in addition to being a good scientist. His wide range of technical expertise, along with his wit, rhetorical skill, and charisma, make him a popular TV host. His steadily rising YouTube viewership is evidence of his burgeoning fame. His views on the relationship between science and spirituality have made him a household name, and he has spoken and written extensively on the subject. As an African-American himself, he is also deeply committed to issues of social and racial justice.

In 1986, he began teaching astronomy as a lecturer at the University of Maryland. He left in 1987 after having been accepted to Columbia University. He studied for his Ph.D. in astrophysics for two years before receiving it in 1991. Professor R. Michael Rich guided him at Columbia University and was instrumental in his securing funding for his doctoral studies from NASA and the ARCS foundation. He used the money to go to Italy, Switzerland, Chile, and South Africa to participate in international conferences.

In the 1990s, he, too, started writing. In 1995, he began penning the now-famous “Universe” section for “Natural History” magazine. Tyson coined the word “Manhattanhenge” to characterize the two days a year when the setting sun coincides with the street grid in Manhattan, and the magazine published a special edition titled “City of Stars” in 2002. Along with the other members, he was instrumental in writing the final report that was released in 2002. This study advised the government on how to best proceed with space exploration and national security in the future.

In 2004, President Bush reappointed him to the same position, this time to a panel of nine people charged with carrying out Bush’s plans for US space exploration. Two years later, NASA’s administrator selected him for the agency’s Advisory Council. The PBS “Nova” miniseries “Origins,” which he hosted in 2004, aired in four parts. A companion book to the series, ‘Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution,’ was written by him and Donald Goldsmith.

At the November 2006 symposium titled “Beyond Belief: Science, Religion, Reason and Survival,” he was a featured speaker. He started appearing regularly on the History Channel show The Universe. Again teaming up with Donald Goldsmith, he provided the narration for the PBS documentary “400 Years of the Telescope” in 2009. The Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space currently has him working as the Frederick P. Rose Director. In the American Museum of Natural History, he works as a research associate in astrophysics. The NASA Outstanding Public Service Award, the agency’s highest civilian accolade, was awarded to him in 2004. His YouTube videos are also quite popular.

The Space Foundation recognized his efforts to educate the general public about space missions by awarding him their Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award in 2009. As a young athlete, Tyson led the wrestling team and won the Isaac Asimov Prize from the American Humanist Association in the same year. He was a bright and inquisitive young man who finished high school in 1976 and went on to become editor-in-chief of his school’s “Physical Science Journal.”

His fascination with astronomy eventually turned into an obsession, and he educated himself thoroughly on the topic.  He wrestled competitively and was a phenomenal dancer throughout his time as a student. He attended the University of Texas in Austin from 1977 until 1983 when he graduated with a master of arts in astronomy.

The University of Maryland hired him as an astronomy professor in 1986. Up until 1987, he remained a resident. The following year, he applied to and was admitted to study at Columbia. After two years of study, he received his doctorate in astrophysics in 1991. Professor R. Michael Rich served as his advisor at Columbia University, and he was able to secure grants from NASA and the ARCS Foundation to complete his dissertation. Thanks to the scholarship, he was able to go to Italy, Switzerland, Chile, and South Africa to participate in international conferences.
