Mohamed ElBaradei Bio

Mohamed El Baradei was born on June 17, 1942, in Cairo, Egypt. His legal father, Mostafa ElBaradei, was the head of Egypt’s Bar organization. He attended the University of Cairo and graduated with a degree in law in 1962. He graduated from Geneva’s Graduate Institute of Studies with a Master’s in International Law. He earned a ‘Doctor of Juridical Science’ from New York University in 1974.

He, like his father before him, advocated for press and individual freedom of expression as well as democratic rights for the Egyptian people. During his time as IAEA Director General, he advocated for nuclear disarmament and the exclusive use of nuclear energy for peaceful ends. He voiced strong support for diplomatic solutions to nuclear proliferation challenges in nations like North Korea and Iran and noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency had discovered no WMD in Iraq, negating a primary justification for the U.S.-led invasion of that country.

He served as the director general of the IAEA for three terms in a row, and he never stopped advocating for nuclear disarmament, both during and after his time there. His fluency in Arabic, English, and French, as well as his passable grasp of German, served him well in his professional endeavors in Vienna. During his time as head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, he returned to Egypt and considered the dictatorship of President Hosni Mubarak to be intolerable. He advocated vigorously for Mubarak’s resignation and served as acting Vice President of Egypt from 14 July 2013 till 14 August 2013.

Mohamed ElBaradei began his diplomatic career in 1964 with the Egyptian “Minister of Foreign Affairs,” where he served in both the New York and Geneva permanent missions to the United Nations. Issues of law, politics, and the regulation of weapons fell under his purview. He was the special assistant to the Egyptian foreign minister from 1974 to 1978. He is now the senior fellow in charge of the UN Institute for Training and Research’s International Law Program.

From 1981 to 1987, he taught international law as an adjunct professor at the so-called “New York School of Law.” From 1984 through 1993, he worked as a senior member of staff and the legal counsel for the IAEA Secretariat. His official title was “Assistant Director General for Foreign Relations,” and he served in that capacity from 1993 to 1997. He is currently an active member of the International Law Association and the American Society of International Law. On December 1st, 1997, he was assigned to Vienna as the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency. More than ninety-three countries had adopted the “Model Additional Protocol” for disclosing undeclared nuclear weaponry by 2009.

His re-election to the position occurred in 2001. In March of 2003, he reported to the United Nations Security Council that the investigation into Iraq from the previous year had turned up nothing of significance. Russia, China, France, Germany, and many developing countries supported his re-election despite significant opposition from the United States. The United States withdrew its opposition, and he was elected without opposition on June 13, 2005. In 2008, he was offered a fourth term, but he declined it for the same reason. He announced his desire to head a provisional administration on January 25, 2011, the first day of the unrest in Egypt.

On January 27, 2011, he returned to Egypt, but the Muslim Brotherhood, the country’s largest opposition party, was hesitant to declare him their leader. In March 2011, he declared his intention to run for president, but he eventually changed his mind.

On July 4, 2013, it was stated that ElBaradei will be Prime Minister when President Mohamed Morsi was deposed. However, on July 7, 2013, the announcement was rescinded after concerns were raised by several groups. After being elected Vice President on July 14th, 2013, he resigned on August 14th, 2013, following protests that resulted in the deaths of 525 supporters of overthrown President Mohamed Morsi.

ElBaradei and the International Atomic Energy Agency shared the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for their work toward nuclear disarmament and the peaceful application of nuclear energy. Aida El-Kachef, a schoolteacher, is Mohamed ElBaradei’s wife. Laila and Mostafa are their offspring. His son is an IT manager in Cairo, while his daughter practices law in London. His granddaughters, Maya and Nina, are his pride and joy. The Egypt Post issued a stamp honoring him among other Nobel laureates on October 8, 2005.

El Baradei joined the IAEA in 1984. The CIA claimed success in its early efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation in Iraq and Sudan and later expanded those operations to North Korea and Iran. Before becoming the assistant director general for external relations in 1993, ElBaradei served as an attorney. In spite of objections from the United States, he was reappointed as director general of the organization for a third term in 2005, having first been appointed in 1997.

After moving back to Egypt in 2010, ElBaradei quickly became an outspoken critic of President Hosni Mubarak’s administration and an advocate for reform. To advocate for changes to Egyptian election legislation, he established the non-partisan National Association for Change. ElBaradei decried the outcome of the sham elections in which Mubarak’s National Democratic Party (NDP) swept to victory over the opposition in November 2010, warning that political repression in Egypt might spark violent upheaval.

ElBaradei returned to Cairo in January 2011 from his home in Vienna, claiming he wanted to take part in the protests against the Mubarak administration. El Baradei was temporarily placed under house arrest after taking part in a massive demonstration on January 28. ElBaradei, who has since returned to the protests, has been designated by the Muslim Brotherhood and other opposition parties as the provisional leader of the opposition in any negotiations with the government.
