Mervyn Fernandez Bio

Mervyn L. Fernandez was a wide receiver for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and the Los Angeles Raiders of the National Football League during his time as a former professional football player in the United States. He was born on December 29, 1959, and his nickname is “Swervin’ Mervyn.” Fernandez was born in the United States.

Fernandez was selected as a CFL All-Star twice, and the BC Lions have inducted him into their Hall of Fame. As a part of the festivities commemorating the 50th anniversary of the BC Lions football club, fans voted Fernandez into the All-Time Dream Team for the BC Lions in 2003. He was selected to play wide receiver on the team. In 2006, Fernandez was ranked number 42 on the list of the Top 50 players in the history of the Canadian Football League by the Canadian sports network TSN. When Fernandez attended Andrew Hill High School in San Jose, California, he excelled as a wide receiver for the school’s football team, where he was given the illustrious moniker “Swervin’ Mervyn” by the team’s quarterback.

After graduating from high school, Fernandez continued his athletic career at San Jose State University, which is located in close proximity to DeAnza Junior College, which is located in Cupertino, California. It was when Fernandez was playing at San José State that members of the coaching staff for the Los Angeles Raiders took note of the 6’3″, 205-pound, fast wide receiver. The Raiders ultimately selected Fernandez in the 10th round of the 1983 NFL Draft. Fernandez played with the BC Lions for his whole six-year career in the Canadian Football League. After signing with the Lions in 1982, Fernandez had an instant impact on the squad, completing his first season with more than 1,000 receiving yards and contributing to his team’s 9–7 record. Fernandez was not only a candidate for the title for the Most Outstanding Rookie in the CFL, but he also earned the award for the Most Outstanding Rookie in the CFL’s Western Division.

Following a pair of seasons in which he accumulated 1,000 yards, Fernandez was an integral part of the BC Lions’ Grey Cup title season in 1985. At the end of the season, Fernandez had 95 receptions for 1,727 yards, which works out to an average of 18.2 yards per grab. He also scored 15 touchdowns. After the Lions’ victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 73rd Grey Cup, which the Lions won 37–24, Fernandez became the first Lion to receive the Canadian Football League’s Most Outstanding Player Award. Fernandez was sidelined with an injury and did not participate in the game.

After the conclusion of the 1986 Canadian Football League season, Al Davis and the Raiders successfully convinced Fernandez to leave the CFL for the NFL. Fernandez was a member of the BC Lions Wall of Fame and was named to the CFL All-Star team in 1984 and 1985. The Los Angeles Raiders were Fernandez’s only employer for his entire National Football League career, which spanned from 1987 to 1992. During that time period, Fernandez participated in 86 games and had a total of 209 receptions, 3,764 receiving yards, and 19 touchdowns.

Even though Fernandez was never selected for the Pro Bowl, he did manage to make his stamp on the record books of the Raiders. His 209 career catches place him tenth all-time among Raiders receivers in terms of receptions. With 3,764 yards throughout the course of his career, he is now ranked eighth all-time. His career average of 18.01 yards per reception is top among all receivers who have ever played for the Raiders in their Silver and Black uniforms. In 1988, Fernandez topped all NFL receivers in terms of the average number of yards gained per reception, which was 26.0.

In 1989, Fernandez had 57 receptions for 1,069 yards and 9 touchdowns, which led all Raiders receivers in practically every major statistic. He also became just the sixth Raider in franchise history to amass more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season. It is arguable that this year was Fernandez’s greatest season ever. At the moment, Fernandez is working as a sales representative and resides in Morgan Hill, which is located in the state of California. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing for sport. Joe Fernandez, his son, played wide receiver at Fresno State University and tried out for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League in 2007, but he was not selected to make the team’s final roster.

2019 was the year that he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. The Oakland-Los Angeles-Las Vegas Raiders have had so many outstanding players in their history, with 30 of them who played in Silver and Black inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, that there are some other really fine players that are sometimes a little ignored. The Raiders franchise has played in all three of the cities of Oakland, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

Mervyn Fernandez, a wide receiver, was one of them. Despite the fact that he passed up his initial opportunity to play with the Raiders, he went on to spend five seasons with the British Columbia Lions up to 1986. During that time, he was a member of two teams that were victorious in the Grey Cup. The Los Angeles Raiders wanted Fernandez, also known as “Swervin’ Mervin,” to return to the league after having taken him out of San Jose State in the 10th round in the 1983 NFL Draft. During his time in the Canadian Football League, Fernandez caught 399 receptions for 6,690 yards and 90 touchdowns.

After just one season with the Spartans, Fernandez decided to leave the team after catching 35 receptions for 697 yards, averaging 19.9 yards per reception, and scoring seven touchdowns. In addition, on his single carry, he ran for 35 yards and scored a touchdown, bringing his total touchdown total to eight. At the time, Fernandez was already playing in Canada. Earlier in his career, he spent two years playing basketball at Cupertino’s DeAnza Junior College.

As a part of the festivities commemorating the 50th anniversary of the BC Lions football club, fans voted Fernandez into the All-Time Dream Team for the BC Lions in 2003. He was selected to play wide receiver on the team. TSN, a Canadian sports network, ranked Fernandez at number 42 on their list of the best 50 players in the CFL’s modern era in their poll that took place in November of 2006.
