Matt Smith Bio

Matthew Robert Smith was born on October 28, 1982, to parents Lynne and David Smith in Northampton, Northamptonshire, UK. He attended the Northampton School for Boys while growing up there. A severe back ailment, however, forced him to abandon his plans. When Smith’s theatre teacher signed him without consulting him for the role of the tenth juror in the play ‘Twelve Angry Men,’ Smith felt like he was being forced into acting. He grudgingly participated in the play.

Smith, who back then still saw himself as a soccer player, did not have a high opinion of acting. His theater teacher, though, was successful in swaying him toward a career in acting, and he eventually enrolled in London’s National Youth Theatre. He enrolled in the fictional “University of East Anglia” to pursue his interests in play and literature. British actor Matthew Robert Smith is best known for playing the Eleventh Doctor in the long-running BBC science fiction program Doctor Who. A back ailment forced Smith, a talented football player who had once dreamed of playing professionally, to reevaluate his goals.

He graduated from the University of East Anglia with a degree in drama and creative writing after performing with the “National Youth Theatre.” On the London stages, in productions like “On the Shore of the Wide World” and “Murder in the Cathedral,” he made his acting debut. He went on to star in a number of other plays, including the critically acclaimed That Face. He first appeared on TV in the film “The Ruby in the Smoke” and then went on to star in a wide variety of other shows.

His appearance as the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC television series Doctor Who, however, gained him widespread recognition and a nomination for a BAFTA. The biographical drama series The Crown also involves him. The films “Christopher and His Kind” and “Terminator: Genisys” both helped to establish his name in the movie industry.

In the play Fresh Kills, performed at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, he made his professional acting debut as Arnold. He wanted to graduate from “The University of East Anglia” but couldn’t since he had to prioritize his acting career over attending his last year of classes. In 2005, he completed college and received his diploma. In Sarah Frankcom and Simon Stephens’s piece, “On the Beach of the Wide World,” he played Paul Danzinger. The drama opened on April 18, 2005, at Manchester’s “Royal Exchange Theatre,” and then on May 26, 2005, it moved to the “Royal National Theatre” in London’s Cottesloe Square.

His subsequent roles at the “Royal National Theatre” were “The History Boys” in 2005–2006 and “Burn/Chatroom/Citizenship” (2006), both of which he performed in. The first of Philip Pullman’s Sally Lockhart quartet novels, “The Ruby in the Smoke,” was adapted into a TV film, and he made his television acting debut in that role. BBC’s original film premiered on ‘BBC One’ on December 27, 2006.

In the British drama series Party Animals, which aired on BBC Two from January 31, 2007, to March 21, 2007, he won his first major television role as Danny Foster.  The role of Henry, an aspiring artist, in the two-act drama ‘That Face’ by English playwright Polly Stenham remains his most notable onstage performance. Directed by Jeremy Herrin, the play had its world premiere on April 26, 2007, at London’s “Royal Court Theatre,” before moving to the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre on May 1, 2008.

The cast of ‘That Face’ was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre in 2008, and the play was praised by critics. Smith received rave reviews from publications like “The Times,” “The Guardian,” “The Daily Express,” and “The Evening Standard” for his outstanding performance.

The comedy-drama film Swimming with Sharks, written and directed by George Huang, was the basis for his West End début. In October of 2007, he starred as Guy in a play that had its world premiere at London’s “Vaudeville Theatre.” Smith later played Jim Taylor in “The Shadow in the North,” a BBC1 version of another book in the Sally Lockhart quartet, which premiered on December 30, 2007.
In 2008, he made his big screen debut in the American black comedy crime thriller ‘In Bruges,’ but his part was cut. He made his acting debut in the 2009 short film “Together,” and he has since been in features such as “Christopher and His Kind,” “Lost River,” and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”.

He portrayed Detective Sergeant Dan Twentyman on BBC Two’s crime drama series ‘Moses Jones,’ which premiered in February 2009.
When David Tennant, who played the tenth Doctor on the British science fiction TV series “Doctor Who,” announced his resignation on October 29, 2008, Matt Smith stepped into the role and has since become known for his performance as the eleventh Doctor.

In doing so, he surpassed Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor, as the youngest actor to ever portray a Doctor. From January 1, 2010, until December 25, 2013, he portrayed the Eleventh Doctor in the fifth, sixth, and seventh series of “Doctor Who,” as well as seven specials.
The critical and popular acclaim he received for his portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor catapulted him to stardom, and he became the first actor to portray the Doctor to be nominated for Best Actor at the 2011 British Academy Television Awards.

In “The Sarah Jane Adventures”, “An Adventure in Space and Time”, and “The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot,” he reprised his role as the Doctor. Fans of “Doctor Who” were reminded of a 2006 episode in which the Doctor carried the Olympic flame when he carried it in Cardiff on May 26, 2012.
