Bio

Martin Garrix was born as Martijn Gerard Garritsen on May 14, 1996, to parents Gerard and Karin Garritsen in the Dutch municipality of Amstelveen, in the province of North Holland. And his sister’s name is Laura. He earned his Master of Arts in “artistic pop music” from the “Herman Brood Academie” in 2013. He’s seeing model Charelle Schriek right now.

Dutch musician, record producer, and DJ Martijn Gerard Garritsen are commonly associated with the “progressive house,” “electro house,” “large room house,” and “future bass” subgenres. Martin Garrix, or the stylized version Mar+in Garri, is the stage name of Dutch musician and DJ Martin Garritsen, who picked up the guitar at the tender age of eight. Inspired by fellow Dutch DJ Tisto’s performance at the 2004 Athens Olympics opening ceremony, Garritsen taught himself how to use music production software like “digital audio workstation” and “FL Studio.”

A few years later, he was discovered by Tisto, and since then he’s worked with artists such as Afrojack, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Dillion Francis, Usher, Julian Jordan, and Troye Sivan. Spinnin’ Records gave him his first big break. In 2016, he signed up with Sony Music and launched his own label, STMPD RCRDS. In 2017, he will have a summer residency at the H Ibiza club. In 2016, he was named the best DJ in the world by DJ Mag, which placed him at the top of the list.

At the age of 14, Martin Garrix began his career as an Electronic Dance Music (EDM) superstar by spinning records at a high school event. His first two singles, “BFAM” and “Just Some Loops,” were published after he met and began working with Tisto as a mentor. In 2012, he dropped his debut single on ‘Spinnin’ Records,’ titled ‘Error 404,’ which featured Jay Hardway.

On Tisto’s label, Musical Freedom, he dropped the single “Torrent” the next year, a collaboration with Sidney Samson. His debut solo effort, “Animals,” was released digitally on June 16, 2013, and became an instant sensation. The song topped the charts all around Europe. It also propelled Garrix to become the youngest artist ever to have a song debut at No. 1 on the Beatport electronic music shop.

On December 2, 2013, he dropped a new single titled “Wizard” alongside Hardway. Later, “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” (2014) utilized the song in the film. The Garrix/Firebeatz collaboration “Helicopter” spent two weeks at the top of the Beatport chart. He was the festival’s main attraction for the first time in early 2014. A break from his typical large room sound, he dropped his debut progressive house tune, “Forbidden Voices,” on February 6, 2015. He collaborated with Usher on the song “Don’t Look Down,” released the same month. At the 2015 Ultra Music Festival in Miami, he performed “Rewind Repeat It,” which included Ed Sheeran.

He left “Spinnin’ Records” in the middle of 2015 due to a disagreement about who owned his music. His new label, “STMPD RCRDS,” and accompanying single, “Now That I’ve Found You,” were both published in the early months of 2016. His 13 June 2016 promotional single, “Oops,” was chosen as the theme song for the “Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016.” On July 26, 2016, he signed a contract with “Sony Music.” At the 2017 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California, Garrix and singer Troye Sivan performed their joint single “There For You.”

In July 2017, he will be performing as Justin Bieber’s opening act at the “Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park” concert. Martin Garrix received the “Best Electro / Progressive Track,” “DJ of the Year,” and “Newcomer of the Year” at the “2013 Dance Music Awards.” He has also appeared twice as a musical guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Awards for his song “Animals” included “The Buma Award” for “Best International Song” and “MTV Clubland Award” in 2014. Prizes for “Best International DJ” and “Best Live Performance” from the NRJ Music Awards, as well as “Best Electronic” and “Best Word Stage Performance” from the MTV Europe Music Awards, were also bestowed to him in 2016.

In honor of Red Nose Day, a charity event organized by Comic Relief, Martin Garrix, Kat Deluna, North of Nine, and Halsey all appeared in a video together in May 2015 to tell a joke. A year later, he gave a performance in Los Angeles to raise money for the cancer-focused nonprofit “Fuck Cancer,” whose goals include cancer screening, prevention, and support for patients and their families. In Mumbai during his November 2016 tour of India, he put on a special charity event where all the revenues went to a group called “Magic Bus,” which helps fund the education of 10,000 children across India.

Early in 2015, Garrix released “Forbidden Voices,” the result of his experiments in the progressive house; he then quickly followed it with “Don’t Look Down,” featuring Usher; throughout the rest of 2015, he worked with Ed Sheeran, Avicii, Tisto, and later on the Break Through the Silence EP with Russian DJs Matisse & Sadko. With the release of “Now That I’ve Found You” in March 2016, Garrix officially kicked off his own STMPD label following his departure from Spinnin’ Records. Garrix signed with Sony Music International a few months later. He finished the year as DJ Mag’s number-one pick worldwide.

Garrix’s 2017 duet with Dua Lipa, “Scared to Be Lonely,” was another smash hit, following 2016’s multi-platinum “In the Name of Love” featuring Bebe Rexha. After that, he collaborated with Troye Sivan on “There for You” and then David Guetta, Jamie Scott, and Romy Dya on “So Far Away.” In 2018, Guetta and Brooks released “As I Do,” their second joint effort. Together with “Game Over” and “Ocean” with LOOPERS and Khalid, his Bylaw EP debuted at number 19 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart that same year.
