Lauren Tewes Bio

Cynthia Lauren Tewes, whose name is pronounced /twig/, is a well-known American actress. She was cast as Julie McCoy in the television anthology series The Love Boat, which ran on ABC from 1977 through 1986. The series ran for a total of 13 seasons. Tewes was the third of four children to be born to Joanne (née Woods) and Joseph Robert Tewes, who worked as a wood pattern maker. Tewes was born in Braddock, Pennsylvania, and is of German descent  Her early youth was spent in the industrial town of Trafford, which is located near Pittsburgh. When she was eight years old, her family relocated to Whittier, California.

Tewes had her education at Ada S. Nelson Elementary School and Pioneer High School, where she majored in acting and was recognized as the school’s Best Actress for three consecutive years. Tewes decided to pursue a career in the performing arts, so he enrolled at Rio Hondo College to earn an Associate of Arts degree in that field. She was able to transfer to the University of California, Riverside as a sophomore after winning “The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Theatre” while she was a student at the college level. This award was for a one-year scholarship.

Tewes left college in 1973 when her scholarship came to an end and became an apprentice at the Pacific Conservatory Theatre in Santa Maria, California. She made her stage debut in the productions of Arsenic and Old Lace and The Happiest Fella before joining the Birdcage Theatre Company at Knott’s Berry Farm, an amusement park located outside of Los Angeles. The first break for Tewes occurred in the middle of 1974 when she was cast in a commercial for Lipton Ice Tea. Because of this, she was able to become a member of the Screen Actors Guild and sign up with an agency so that she might potentially work on film projects.

Soon after, Tewes was cast in roles on the prime time television shows Charlie’s Angels (“Angels in Chains”), Vega$ (My Darling Daughter), and Family (“Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…”) as Jill Redfield, a jaded Pasadena debutante. However, it was her role as Sharon Freemont, an assistant district attorney, in the Starsky & Hutch episode “Starsky and Hutch Are Guilty” that brought her to the attention of Aaron Spelling.

More than one hundred actresses tried out for the part of Julie McCoy, the cruise director, on the television show The Love Boat, and Tewes was chosen from among them. She was cast in the show’s third and final pilot, which was shot on the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, the day before production was to begin. She starred in the pilot. Tewes reflects on the first episode of the show:

Because my 1962 Volkswagen Bug was not going to make it to San Pedro without a new tire, I was forced to take out a loan to pay for it. During that first day, while I was standing there in the little dress, I had to say, “Hi, welcome aboard, I’m Julie McCoy, your cruise director” a gazillion times. But I kept getting it wrong and said things like, “Hi, welcome aboard, my name is Julie MacLeod…” because I was so giddy when I was talking to Gavin MacLeod.

Tewes had her acting debut in the 1981 film Eyes of a Stranger, which also included a young version of Jennifer Jason Leigh. At the same time, she had a role in the television film Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, which aired in 1979 and starred Jane Seymour. Tewes was fired from The Love Boat in 1984, after having been on the show for seven seasons, due to her highly publicized struggle with cocaine addiction, which she subsequently conquered. She did play the part again as a guest in an episode that aired in 1985, as well as in the television movies that aired during the 1986–1987 season.

Tewes was given a role in the pilot episode of the sitcom Anything for Love, which aired on CBS in 1985. The pilot episode was broadcast throughout that summer as a special, but it was ultimately not picked up for a series. After that, she went on to star in some of the most iconic television shows of the 1980s, including My Two Dads, The New Mike Hammer, Murder, She Wrote, T. J. Hooker, and Hunter.

Tewes relocated to Seattle in 1994 and focused on performing and directing in regional theaters across the country after making the move. She was a member of the Tacoma Actors Guild as well as the Seattle Repertory Theatre while she was living in Seattle. Tewes resumed her career in television by appearing in an episode of Love Boat: The Next Wave, a revival of the series that aired for two seasons and aired in 1998. In addition to doing voice-overs for commercials, Tewes continued her career in television. She appeared in multiple episodes of The Fugitive between the years 2000 and 2001, playing the character of a police detective.

Murder and the Murdochs is a comedy-mystery radio series that was first broadcast by Imagination Theatre in the year 2020. Tewes plays the role of Maxine Murdoch. In addition, she has performed roles in episodes of many other radio series that are broadcast on Imagination Theatre. Tewes went to culinary school to become an expert in cheese, and when he’s not acting, he works as a sous-chef for a catering firm in Seattle. Tewes is from the United Kingdom.

Lauren Tewes is an American actor who first gained widespread recognition for her role as Julie McCoy on the drama series ‘The Love Boat’ which aired on ABC. Tewes had to demonstrate her perseverance for a number of years before she could experience success because she was born into a household that belonged to the lower middle class. However, as soon as she started enjoying the results of her hard work, her career came to a screeching halt and she was forced to start over from scratch. Tewes was an early victim of the prevalent drug culture in Hollywood, which she encountered early on in her career.

It was too late for her to start the withdrawal process when she finally got around to seeking assistance from a counselor. Because of her addiction to cocaine, she was forced to give up her career, her spouse, and her home. A few years later, she was also bereaved by the loss of her newborn kid. Tewes was forced to reinvent herself after a string of unlucky circumstances, and she eventually found success in provincial theater as an actor and director. She gives performances in Seattle on a regular basis.
