It was on September 30th, 1986 in the city of Seoul, South Korea that he was born. In his family, he was the elder of his two younger brothers and sisters. When he was six years old, his family uprooted and moved to Auckland in the country of New Zealand. He was able to improve his English skills there before moving to Los Angeles, California, with his family two years later. His parents manage a restaurant. When Lee was in middle school, he had an interest in acting and took part in a number of plays that the school put on.

In 2008, he graduated from the ‘University of California,’ Berkeley, with a degree in psychology and was a member of the university’s chapter for the project titled ‘Liberty in North Korea.’ Additionally, he worked as an intern for the organization. After graduating from college, he assisted his parents in running their restaurant in Little Tokyo, which is located in the central business district of Los Angeles, while also beginning to pursue a career in acting.
