Keri Hulme Bio

Keri Hulme was born on March 9, 1947, in Christchurch, New Zealand. At the age of eleven, Hulme lost her father. She had already shown promise as a writer through her original poetry, short stories, and reworkings of previously published works. Hulme’s mother turned a sun porch into a writing studio to inspire her eldest child. Hulme had a dream about a mute, mysterious boy with long hair and emerald eyes when she was eighteen years old.

She based Simon, the protagonist of her debut novel, on this dream. Keri Hulme, like her protagonist Kerewin Holmes, feels a strong connection to her Maori roots. Hulme, like her main character, left home at a young age and took various occupations to support herself, including working in the tobacco field and for the New Zealand postal service. She attended the University of Canterbury for a full academic year.

Hulme’s debut poetry collection, Silences Between, came out in 1982. In 1984, we first met The Bone People. This lengthy novel started out as a shorter piece. Hulme’s book was turned down by numerous publishing houses before being picked up by a tiny group of women. The initial print run of four thousand copies sold out rapidly.

The main character, Kerewin Holmes, has a nap in the open air. She opens her eyes to find a sandal on her foot. She swears at whoever left the tiny shoe with the hole in the heel. Based on the footprints she discovers, Kerewin assumes it belongs to a young child who tripped on something sharp and hobbled off.

Kerewin has a tower-shaped home that she built on her own piece of land. She has never had a guest over to her house. Kerewin walks into her home and notices a tiny boy perched on a bookshelf. Kerewin yells at him and quickly realizes the kid is speechless. The young youngster sports a necklace with his contact info engraved on it. Simon P. Gillayley is his name.

Kerewin sees that the youngster has a splinter of wood embedded in his foot. She removes it, bands his foot, and sends him on his way. The youngster makes brief notes on a pad and uses hand gestures to convey his thoughts. Kerewin develops soft feelings for the kid, so he asks him to lunch. After that, she dials the phone number she had for the boy. Her ancestry included the Mori (Kai Tahu), the English, and the Scots. Hulme told Contemporary Women Poets, “Our family comes from diverse people: Kai Tahu, Kti Mamoe (South Island Maori iwi); Orkney islanders; Lancashire folk; Faroese and/or Norwegian migrants.” She attended North New Brighton Primary and Aranui High School in her formative years. When she was only 11 years old, her father passed away.

After dropping out of school, Hulme found work in Motueka as a tobacco picker. In 1967, she enrolled at the University of Canterbury to pursue a bachelor’s degree in honors law, but she dropped out after four terms to return to her family’s tobacco farming business. In 1972, she made the decision to devote herself to writing full-time; nevertheless, nine months later, despite the encouragement of her loved ones, she was back at her day job. She kept on writing and published some works under the pen name Kai Tainui.

It was during this time that she wrote most of what would become her novel The Bone People, which was released in February 1984. Before the Spiral Collective accepted the work, it was rejected by a number of publishers. Both the New Zealand Book Award for Fiction and the Booker Prize went to this novel. Until Hulme, no one from New Zealand had ever won the Booker Prize.

The University of Otago had Hulme as a writer-in-residence in 1978, and the University of Canterbury did the same for him in 1985. Oamaru, in the region of North Otago, is her home. Since 1996, Hulme has held the position of Patron of the New Zealand Republic. She does not believe in God and is an aromantic asexual. Keri Hulme, the first New Zealander, and a renowned writer and poet passed away at the age of 74.

Her dreams were rich with inspiration for her writing, which typically dealt with themes of individuality and loneliness. According to Sam Jordison of the Guardian, the lonesome Maori artist Kerewin Holmes is “a clear stand-in for the author” in the novel The Bone People. It took Hulme 12 years to compose The Bone People, which has been called a “unique example of Mori magical realism,” yet no New Zealand publishers were interested in publishing it as is. Hulme said that she would rather see the book “embalmed in Perspex” than revised it. In 1984, a small feminist press called Spiral decided to print 2,000 copies of the book. More than a million copies have been sold, and it has been awarded both the Booker and the Pegasus prizes for literature.

Hulme didn’t go to the 1985 Booker Prize ceremony in London because she didn’t think she had a chance of winning. She said, “You are pulling my leg aren’t you… ” when she was told she had won via telephone during the international broadcast. Oh my god, that is unfathomable. Hulme’s nephew, Matthew Salmons, told New Zealand news outlet Stuff that his aunt never considered herself a ” literary giant.”

She has always been a storyteller, and she has never cared about being famous. She never claimed to be glamorous; she just had things to tell. To quote one member of the family: “She gave us the greatest gift of all by reuniting us with our Whakapapa Mori and rekindling the love of our history and people that had been lost for a few generations.” Hulme spent a significant amount of time at Krito, a village on the West Coast of New Zealand, where she focused on her whitebait fishing, art, and writing. A novella, a short story collection, and more all came from her pen.
