Kate Miller-Heidke Bio

Miller-Heidke was born on 16 November 1981. She received a full scholarship to study music at university, and she graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Classical Voice from Griffith University’s Queensland Conservatorium of Music. She later earned a Master of Music from the Queensland University of Technology.

The Elizabeth Muir Award, the Donald Penman Prize, the Linda Edith Allen Memorial Prize, and the Horace Keats Prize are just a few of the prestigious honors she has received for her classical singing. Orpheus in the Underworld, Venus, Adonis, and The Pilgrim’s Journey are just a few of the works she has performed at the conservatory. Miller-Heidke, in her role as an Opera Queensland Emerging Artist, has covered various roles, including those of Sweeney Todd, Don Pasquale, and Un Ballo in Maschera. She made her professional opera debut as Flora in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw with Opera Queensland in July 2005.

She published her first EP, a seven-song collection titled “Telegram,” on her own in June of 2004. In April of 2006, the “Circular Breathing” EP arrived. Kate’s first studio album, titled Little Eve, was released on June 15, 2007. The album debuted at #11 and was nominated for four ARIAs.

The US release of Miller-second Heidke’s studio album, “Curiouser,” is set for March 16th, 2010, and it will have the additional tracks “Words” and “RUFKM.” Miller-Heidke recorded the album with Keir Nuttall and Mickey Petralia in Los Angeles, USA. Nuttall has worked with Beck and Petralia has produced albums for Flight of the Conchords.

During the spring, Kate will be visiting the United States. Shows to look forward to include Ben Folds and SXSW in March, as well as Joe’s Pub in New York on March 15. For 2009, Miller-Heidke has been up for four Aria Awards, including Best Female, Best Pop Release, Best Video for “Last Day on Earth,” and Single of the Year.

Miller-Heidke announced on September 27 that she has parted ways with her previous label, Sony Music, in order to pursue a crowd-funded project on the crowdfunding platform Pledge Music. O Vertigo!, a new album, was released via Cooking Vinyl on March 14, 2014. Both Nightflight and Curiouser, which went double platinum in Australia and produced the multi-platinum hits “The Last Day on Earth” and “Caught in the Crowd,” are among Kate’s prior albums. For her song “Caught in the Crowd,” she became the first Australian to win the top prize at the International Songwriting Competition in 2009.

Kate studied classical singing at the Queensland Conservatorium and has since appeared in Jerry Springer: The Opera at the Sydney Opera House, in addition to performing with the English National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her first opera, The Rabbits, premiered at the Perth Festival in 2015 and went on to sell out runs in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane thanks to a commission from Opera Australia. It took in four Helpmann Awards, including Best New Australian Work and Best Score. Kate Miller-Heidke was all set to embark on a career as a soprano in Gilbert & Sullivan productions when the call of pop music came her way.

She developed into a Kate Bush–style singer/songwriter after learning to play the piano; her songs are known for their theatricality, folk/pop hybridity, and hints of comedic opera. Miller-Heidke would charge her family five cents for her performances around the home when she was a little girl. There was a long road from her time working at a Best & Less store to her current status as a darling of alternative radio and youthful audiences.

Australian-born singer and actress Kate Miller-Heidke. In addition to her operatic training, she has also performed in the pop, rock, and adult contemporary music genres with great success. She has participated in a number of films and stage shows, with her appearance in the Australian production of Jerry Springer: The Musical garnering particular recognition.

She began her career in 2000 as the frontwoman for the band Elsewhere, and in 2002 she went solo. Although her first EP, “Telegram,” was released in 2004, her breakthrough album, “Little Eve,” was released in 2007 and certified gold in Australia. After winning the inaugural Eurovision: Australia Decides competition, she went on to represent Australia at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv with the song Zero Gravity. She earned ninth place in the competition’s final round, vaulting her country back into the top 10.

She was a contestant in the second season of Australia’s The Masked Singer in 2020. She came in second place and was eventually revealed to be the Queen. In 2000, she and some other artists from Brisbane formed the band Elsewhere and produced an EP under that name. Miller-Heidke also did solo shows, where she hilariously incorporated opera into her renditions of songs from various genres. Many of them were compiled into a rare EP titled Comikaze that came out in 2005. Elsewhere ended its run in 2004. Miller-Heidke maintained a busy performance schedule over the next few years, both as a solo artist and as a regular participant in the Women in Voice showcase.

At this time, she published her 2004 EP Telegraph and, in 2005, she participated in the Women in Voice concert, for which she won the Helpmann Award for Best Performance in an Australian Modern Concert. She made her opera debut as Flora in Turn of the Screw at the same time as her song “Space They Cannot Touch” from Telegram was topping the charts at alternative radio station JJJ. Six editions of the EP were printed, and in 2006, Miller-Heidke issued a seventh, titled Circular Breathing. Her first album, Little Eve, was released in 2007 after she signed with Sony-BMG Australia.
