Bernthal is a well-known American actor who rose to fame for his role as Shane Walsh on ‘The Walking Dead.’ Bernthal moved to Los Angeles as a child after being born in New York.  David Crane, co-creator of Friends and creator of the comedy series The Class, cast him in his first significant television role. Bernthal’s supporting performance as a gangster named Al Capone in the 2009 comedy film “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” brought him great attention and eventually landed him a spot in the TV series “Eastwick.”

In 2010, he got his big break when he was cast as Shane Walsh on ‘The Walking Dead,’ a popular television series. Bernthal’s cinematic credits include The Wolf of Wall Street and ‘Grudge Match,’ in which he played a supporting role. The World War II thriller ‘Fury,’ starring Brad Pitt, features his most recent film appearance, which was in 2014. The video game “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” has featured Bernthal as a playable character since its 2014 release.

On September 20, 1976, Jonathan Bernthal was born to Jewish parents in Washington, DC. He was raised a Washingtonian. His parents are also lawyers; Eric Lawrence “Rick” Bernthal and Joan Lurie. Bernthal attended and graduated from New York’s Skidmore College, but he took a break in the middle of his studies to study theater in Moscow, Russia. He played catcher for a semi-professional baseball team in Moscow.

Bernthal moved back to the States to attend theater school at Cambridge, Massachusetts’ American Repertory Theater. His decision to pursue a career in the performing arts followed his completion of non-degree courses in 2002. Actor Jonathan Bernthal got his start in the business on the stage. He has been acting professionally since 2002 and has been in about 30 different shows. In the same year, he also played a detective on an episode of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” under the name Lane Ruddock. His first role in a major motion picture was as Manny in the 2002 film Mary/Mary. Bernthal received widespread critical acclaim for his performance as Donnie Pitron in the 2008 film “Bar Starz,” as well as lucrative roles in a number of high-profile films and television shows in the years that followed.

Years of little roles on TV and in movies led to his big break as Al Capone in “Night in the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” in 2009. The role he played in the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street” is widely considered to be his most famous to date. In 2010, he began playing Shane Walsh on the hit AMC series “The Walking Dead.” A California native, Bernthal was born there. Regularly until his character’s death in 2012, he was a fixture on the show.

In 2015, Bernthal signed a contract with Netflix to play Frank Castle/The Punisher on the second season of “Daredevil,” a superhero series that premiered in 2016. In 2019, a new Netflix series starring him as “The Punisher” will debut. In 2017, he was a part of the film teams for Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver” and Taylor Sheridan’s “Wind River,” the latter of which was Sheridan’s directorial debut. After making its international premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, ‘Wind River’ was met with widespread critical acclaim. In addition, he collaborated on the Irish action thriller ‘Pilgrimage,’ which starred Tom Holland and Richard Armitage.

His extensive television resume includes such hits as CSI: Miami, How I Met Your Mother, Harry’s Law, The Pacific, Robot Chicken, Show Me a Hero, SuperMansion, and Mob City. He became famous as an investigator on the hit TV show ‘CSI: Miami.’ He has appeared in a number of plays, including the award-winning “Small Engine Repair,” in which he played the role of Terence Swain. Throughout his career, he has performed in over 30 plays in America and elsewhere. He also owns the critically acclaimed theater company Fovea Floods, which has performed several of his works. In 2011, Jon Bernthal’s play “Small Engine Repair” received the Ovation Award for Best Acting Ensemble in a Play, and Bernthal himself was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance.

The role of Brad Bodnick in the 2013 film ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ earned him nominations at nearly every major film award ceremony that year.  His first win came in 2014 when the film Fury, in which he appeared, won the National Board of Review win for Best Cast. He portrayed Grady “Coon-Ass” Travis in the aforementioned movie.
