Joe Don Baker Bio

In Groesbeck, Texas, on February 12, 1936, Joe Don Baker was brought into the world by his parents, Doyle Charles Baker and Edna Baker. Young Joe was quite active in the school productions that were offered during his time as a student in high school. However, because of his reserved nature, he was never considered for the major role in the play.

While he was at the university, he had his first real realizations about the possibilities that lay ahead for him as an actor. His first audition for a stage performance was at the ‘State Texas College’ (now known as the ‘University of North Texas’), and it was a natural step for him to take. He quickly came to the conclusion that he wanted to spend the rest of his life working in the entertainment industry.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1958, he enlisted in the “United States Army.” On the other hand, following a stay of two years in the nation’s capital, he relocated to New York City in order to attend the illustrious ‘Actors Studio.’Joe Don Baker is a well-known American actor who rose to prominence thanks to his stellar work in films such as “Walking Tall” and “Charley Varrick.” He received his diploma from ‘Actors Studio’ and has been accepted as a lifelong member of this illustrious organization.

Since a young age, Baker has an interest in performing in front of an audience. Sadly, he was never deemed a lead actor in any of the school productions that he participated in. The realization that he had arrived at his true vocation came to him while he was still a student. After finishing high school, he enlisted in the ‘United States Army’ for a short time before enrolling in the ‘Actors Studio’ in New York City. When he was in his early 20s, he began his career as an actor by appearing in theater productions and on “Broadway.”

In the pilot episode of ‘Honey West,’ in which he played the role of a truck driver, he made his debut on television. Baker subsequently became known for his tough and cynical parts in legendary Westerns such as ‘Guns of the Magnificent Seven’ (1969), which helped him establish himself as an action hero. He reached the zenith of his career in the middle of the 1970s, with a string of consecutively successful films such as ‘Walking Tall,’ ‘Mitchell,’ ‘Final Justice,’ and ‘Charley Varrick.’

Despite the challenging roles he played and the widespread critical accolades he garnered during his career, Baker was never acknowledged as a classic Hollywood leading man. This was the case despite the fact that he got.Baker launched his career on “Broadway” in 1963 with the production of “Marathon ’33” by June Havoc, which was based on the author’s own experiences during the Great Depression. The following year, he was cast in Burgess Meredith’s production of “Blues for Mr. Charlie” and Henry Fonda’s production of “The Caine Mutiny Court Martial” (which ran for 48 shows at the “Ahmanson Theatre” in downtown Los Angeles).

Baker had his first appearance on television in 1965, starring as a truck driver in an episode of the show ‘Honey West.’ Even though it was only a few minutes long and he gave a performance that was merely average, it was the one that determined the kind of employment he would be offered in the future. In 1967, he made his debut in the film ‘Cool Hand Luke,’ albeit in an uncredited and minor role.

Because of his towering stature and rugged appearance, he was cast in a number of parts that were considered to be clichéd in movies and television series. In the Western drama ‘Guns of the Magnificent Seven,’ which was released in 1969, he made his debut as the character ‘Slater,’ a hired gun with a nasty mouth. In this role, he achieved great success. The movie was not able to achieve the same level of success as the cult classics ‘The Magnificent Seven’ (1960) and ‘Return of the Magnificent Seven’ (1966).

In 1971, he appeared in the film ‘Wild Rovers,’ which was produced by MGM and was yet another Western. He played the supporting part of ‘Paul Buckman.’ In the same year, his film “Mongo’s Back in Town” was made available to the public. Baker managed to steal the show from veterans who acted in the film such as Telly Savalas, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field despite the fact that he was not listed as one of the credited actors in the production.
The character of ‘Steve McQueen’s brother’ in Sam Peckinpah’s ‘Junior Bonner,’ which he played in 1972, was essential in his rise to fame and helped pave the road for his success.

Baker was able to secure the starring role of ‘Buford Pusser’ in Phil Karlson’s ‘Walking Tall’ (1973) as a direct result of his work in the 1973 film Junior Bonner. It was a part that turned out to be a pivotal moment in his career. Because Baker did such a phenomenal job portraying the character, the movie ended up being an unanticipated financial and critical success. The movie, which had a modest production budget of $500,000, ended up grossing $23 million after it was all said and done.

He continued his run of hits with a performance in ‘Charley Varrick’ (1973) that was yet another one of his unforgettable turns. Despite receiving generally favorable reviews from film critics, the movie was not successful at the box office. It was a picture that was praised for being “ahead of its time.” Baker’s career enjoyed one of its most successful periods throughout the year 1973. His third critically acclaimed film of the year was an engrossing action–drama titled “The Outfit,” in which he played the major part of “Jack Cody,” a convicted felon seeking retribution for the murder of his brother.

It was considered that Baker was on the verge of reaching the pinnacle of his career at that point due to the string of hits he had scored with his movies in the early 1970s. However, things went awry for him as he starred in a series of movies that were not commercially successful. These movies included “Golden Needles” (1974), “Speedtrap” (1977), “The Shadow of Chikara” (1977), and “The Pack” (1977).Baker was cast in ‘NBC’s ‘To Kill a Cop’ in 1978 and the crime-drama series ‘Eischied’ (1979–1980) due to his extraordinary performance in the film ‘Walking Tall,’ despite the fact that he had failed in other roles previously.

In the early 1980s, he broadened the scope of his career by starring in the comedic films ‘Wacko’ and ‘Joysticks’ as well as the dramatic sports film ‘The Natural’ (1984). In 1985, he had a starring role in ‘BBC’s ‘Edge of Darkness,’ which is widely considered to be one of the pinnacles of British television and is credited with launching Baker into the world of European film and television. Because of his work in the series, he was considered for the “Best Actor” nomination at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

During the course of an interview, he elaborated on his encounter by stating, “It was a great part, a great script, great actors, and a great director, Martin Campbell.” His performance in ‘Edge of Darkness’ resulted him a number of film and television offers in the United Kingdom. Baker got his start in the ‘James Bond’ franchise with Timothy Dalton’s ‘The Living Daylights’ (1987), which is considered to be one of the most successful film franchises to come out of the United Kingdom. He had roles in two more ‘Bond’ movies, namely ‘Golden Eye’ (1995) and ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ (1997).

The decade of the 1990s saw Baker primarily cast in supporting roles on the big screen, with films such as “Cape Fear,” “The Distinguished Gentleman,” “Underneath,” and “Congo” among his credits. Among his more recent pieces is ‘The Cleaner’ (2009). In the episode titled “Last American Causality,” which he was a part of, he played the role of “Major Larry Duren.” In addition, you can see him in the films ‘Strange Wilderness’ (2008) and ‘Mud’ (2012).
He was a production manager for the 1980 television movie “Power,” which he worked on.
