Joanne Michèle was born on July 3, 1964. Her novel Chocolat was adapted into a critically acclaimed film. Starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, Lena Olin, and Johnny Depp, Lasse Hallström’s film adaptation premiered in 2000. It received nominations for 8 British Academy Film Awards and 5 Academy Awards.
Harris was born to an English father and a French mother in the Yorkshire town of Barnsley. Both of her parents were professors who taught literature and language arts at the elementary school where she attended. Since French was her first language, it drove a wedge between her English family, who all spoke English, and her French family, who all spoke French. Both families had a history of hardship and were steeped in the traditions of independent women, kitchen gardening, oral history, and home cooking.
Her early works show the influence of fairy tale collections like Grimms’ and Charles Perrault’s, as well as regional legends and myths and Norse lore. She studied modern and medieval languages at Wakefield Girls’ High School, Barnsley Sixth Form College, and St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge.
She qualified as a teacher at Sheffield University following a year she describes as “like being trapped in a Terry Gilliam movie” as an accountant. She then spent the next fifteen years teaching modern languages, primarily at Leeds Grammar School, a boys’ independent school in Yorkshire. She also lectured on French cinema and literature at Sheffield University. During this time, she completed several book-related projects. Her debut work, 1989’s The Evil Seed, was not a huge bestseller. Her transition from horror-pastiche to the literary ghost story is reflected in her second work, Sleep, Pale Sister. Chocolat, her third novel, was a modern folk story with a darkly magical twist that was themed around food and was set in the Gers area of France.
It was a huge success and debuted at number one on the Sunday Times bestseller list in 1999. The novel was a finalist for the 1999 Creative Freedom Award and the 1999 Whitbread Novel of the Year. David Brown purchased the film rights, and Miramax Pictures is producing the film. Harris gained widespread recognition after the box office success of the film adaptation starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, and in 2012 she joined the “Millionaires’ Club,” an exclusive group of authors who have each sold one million copies of their books in the United Kingdom since records began.
All of Harris’s books since Chocolat have been top-sellers in the United Kingdom. Her preference for complex topics and the breadth of her subject choices make it impossible to classify her work. She has written two more novels in the Chocolat series, The Lollipop Shoes, and Peaches for Monsieur le Curé, continuing the adventures of Vianne Rocher. She has also written two French cookbooks, two collections of short stories, and a number of dark psychological thrillers, such as Gentlemen and Players and Blueeyedboy.
Her Norse mythology–inspired synthpunk/fantasy novel Runemarks was released in August 2007, and it was written for readers of all ages. Since the publication of Runelight, the sequel, in 2011, there has been a growing fanbase of readers who enjoy the Rune books in addition to those who enjoy the works of Vianne Rocher. The Gospel of Loki was released in February 2014, continuing the Norse mythological theme. From the perspective of Loki, the trickster, this book recounts the history of the gods of Asgard and their eventual downfall. Identity crises, mother-child bonds, food’s emotional relevance, the fantastical and terrifying in the mundane, social outcasts, religion, superstition, and the simple pleasures of life are only a few of Harris’s recurring themes. She has publicly criticized the persistence of sexism in the literary community and explained how she works a critique of such views into her writing.
Her writing style emphasizes the five senses, particularly the gustatory and olfactory ones. Harris may be experiencing this because of her synaesthetic ability, which allows her to interpret colors as aromas. Characters in her novels are frequently emotionally broken or morally dubious, and the tone of her books is typically considerably harsher than the Chocolat movie adaptation would have us believe. Both Blueeyedboy and Five Quarters of the Orange have mother figures that are overbearing and often aggressive, while father roles are scarce. Harris frequently uses a first-person, dual-narrator framework to provide light on ongoing events by going back in time. In most cases, this results in richly nuanced characters; sometimes, even minor characters receive this treatment.
Her novels feature vivid locations that are just as important to the plot as the main characters. Blackberry Wine is set in the same fictional French village, Lansquenet-sous-Tannes, as Chocolat and Peaches for Monsieur le Curé, while the same fictional Yorkshire village, Malbry, serves as the backdrop for Blueeyedboy, Gentlemen and Players, and a number of short pieces. Maddy’s hometown in the Rune books is also called Malbry, and it seems to share some similarities with Harris’ hometown of Almondbury. She is an Honorary Fellow at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and a recipient of honorary doctorates in literature from the Universities of Huddersfield and Sheffield.
She reports on the work of the organizations she supports as a patron, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and Plan UK, by visiting both Togo and the Congo. In 2010, she had an account of her trip to the Congo published in Writing on the Edge, a collection of essays by renowned authors illustrated by Tom Craig’s images. She has also contributed short works to charity anthologies, such as those for Piggybank Kids, the Woodland Trust, the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, and Breast Cancer UK. The Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 2013 recognized her efforts with the award of an MBE. She is a wife and mother to a daughter named Anouchka; the family resides in Yorkshire.
