Joan Allen was born on August 20, 1956, in Rochelle, Illinois, to parents who were both teachers. She was the youngest of four children. She is the daughter of Dorothea Marie (Wirth), a housewife, and James Jefferson Allen, the proprietor of a gas station in New York City. Her mother’s family was of German descent, while her father’s ancestors were of English, Scots-Irish, and German descent. She went to Rochelle Township High School, where she was selected the most likely to succeed by her fellow students. She became a member of Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s ensemble in 1977, and she was one of the group’s founding members, appearing in a number of the company’s early shows.

A humorous turn in the suburban murder mystery Compromising Positions (1985) and a serious performance as a blind lady befriended by a serial murderer in Manhunter (1986) were among her first significant film roles, which were both highly acclaimed and demonstrated her flexibility (1986). Around the same time, Allen was building a name for herself on the New York stage; she would go on to become one of the most acclaimed actresses in the New York theatre scene, as well as a recipient of every major award for her work both on and off Broadway. For her portrayal in Lanford Wilson’s Burn This, in which she appeared alongside John Malkovich, she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in 1988. She was nominated for another Tony Award in the same category in 1989 for the main role in The Heidi Chronicles.

With her film career continuing, Allen received her first Academy Award nomination in 1995 for her performance as Pat Nixon in Oliver Stone’s Nixon, for which she also received awards from seven critics’ organisations, including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics.

Allen was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, which was her second straight nomination (1996). Following that, her performances in The Ice Storm (1997), in which she co-starred with Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver, and Pleasantville (1998), in which she co-starred with William H. Macy and Jeff Daniels, garnered her critical acclaim and several awards; she also co-starred in the action blockbuster Face/Off (1997), in which she co-starred with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Allen was nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards, the SAG Awards, and the Independent Spirit Awards for her performance as the title character in The Contender (2000), which she also directed.

While in his twenties, Allen worked in both the film and television industries, landing roles in three Bourne films – The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), and The Bourne Legacy (2012) – as well as other films such as The Notebook (2004), The Upside of Anger (2005), and Death Race (2005). (2008). As well as The Mists of Avalon (2001) and the title character in the biopic Georgia O’Keeffe (2009), for which she served as executive producer, Allen has won Emmy nods for her work in other films. She has also appeared in the HBO drama series Luck, which premiered last year (2011).

A divorce was finalised in 2002 after Allen’s marriage to actor Peter Friedman ended in divorce. Allen’s daughter Sadie was born in 1994.

I was quite bashful, but I was keen to meet some male companions. As a result, my sister suggested that I become a cheerleader. I didn’t make it into the cheering team, so I decided to try out for a play instead. I discovered that I truly adored it as soon as I did so. I was able to weep, yell, and laugh, but only in a safe and controlled setting.

Actually, if Oliver Stone had requested that Pat Nixon wear a G-string and hang from a chandelier, I would have done it just as he requested.

That I had been a really decent girl for a long time was what first attracted me to the performing industry. The platform provided the ideal environment for being outrageous, sad, furious, and all of these other emotions at the same time.

More than half of all Americans disapprove of the government [of President George W. Bush]; that’s a significant number of individuals. However, they are not covered by the media. I know that myself and my New York-based friends were heartbroken by the results of the previous election [in 2004]. Because it was so heartbreaking, we couldn’t even stand up. And they are the ones with whom I spend a significant amount of time.

I’m a difficult person to pin down. In films, I tend to have a different appearance. I’m sometimes recognised by people. But I simply go about my business. No issue, I just jump on the bus or the metro, and I’m on my way. I consider myself more of a character actress than the typical ingénue leading woman, such as Michelle Pfeiffer or Jessica Lange, who began their careers in the same way. I’m a little more eccentric than that.

I believe I realised early on that acting was what I wanted to do. It didn’t matter that I came from a little town where there was nowhere for an adult to identify it. I believe that the cheerleading act was a means of putting on a show. There was the aspect of the boy, but the element of performance was much more essential. Upon entering high school and being accepted into a play, I realised that this was exactly what I had been yearning for all of my life. Once it was resolved, it was game over for the rest of the team starting at 13.

I was the nice girl, you see. This is the straight A student, on the honour roll, a member of the chorus, etc. I sucked at the cello for a long time. I performed in plays.
