Karin Jan Smithers is a former actress from the United States. She became famous for her role as Bailey Quarters on the comedy WKRP in Cincinnati, which aired on CBS from 1978 through 1982. In June of 2014, Smithers was able to make it to a reunion of the remaining cast members of WKRP in Cincinnati, which was organized by the Paley Center for Media. When Smithers joined the cast of WKRP in Cincinnati, she already had a filmography that included appearances in films such as Where the Lilies Bloom and Our Winning Season. Smithers also had a role on the television show WKRP in Cincinnati. According to an interview she gave to Newsweek in 2016, she said that she got her start in the entertainment industry while she was still in high school and two guys who “looked like little pencils” noticed her on the beach.
“One of them sported long hair and was wearing cameras around his neck. They came straight up to me and said, “We’re doing an article on teens across the country, and we’re looking for a girl from California. Would you be interested in being our subject?” She said, “We are wondering if you would be interested in doing the article.” After the last episode of WKRP aired in 1982, Smithers maintained his acting career for another five years. She had roles on the television shows The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote, but her last performance would be as Lise in Mr. Nice Guy. After that, she would retire from acting to concentrate on having a mom. In 1987, the couple, who was married at the time to James Brolin, became parents to their daughter Molly.
“Having a career was very important to me, but when I met Molly, all I could do was look at her and tell her, ‘You need me.'” And she looked at me with such purity in her eyes,” she said to Newsweek. “I thought, I have no choice but to stay here!” My whole existence was turned upside down by her. I yearned to be her mother with all my heart.
And when she got older, Smithers’ daughter continued the family tradition by also pursuing a career in the entertainment business, much like her famous parents. Molly has worked as a producer and a production assistant on a number of movies, including Men in Black 3, and she has chosen a career in which she is not in front of the camera. “It was good—really good—but some way, some somewhere, we began to stray from the path. His job required him to travel quite a bit. We moved in different directions. He would be absent for many months at a time. Smithers told Newsweek that she wanted to live in the country to get away from that lifestyle and because she had a daughter named Molly. After his first marriage to Smithers ended in divorce, in 1998, Brolin wed Barbra Streisand. Jess and Josh Brolin are his other children from a previous marriage to Jane Cameron Agee. In addition to Molly, he has two more children from this marriage. Smithers’ lone kid is a girl named Molly. Because of this, Smithers and her mother traveled to Hollywood in order to meet with agents. Although Smithers enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts, she finally decided to leave school before completing her degree in order to pursue a career in acting full-time.
