James McBride Bio

James McBride was born in 1957. His childhood with his Jewish mother is the subject of his best-selling and critically praised memoir The Color of Water. McBride grew up in the Red Hook housing projects in Brooklyn and went on to study composition at Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory. After finishing undergrad, he went on to earn a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia.

McBride’s writing has been featured in Essence, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times, and he has served as a staff writer for The Boston Globe, People Magazine, and The Washington Post. His article “Hip Hop Planet” for National Geographic in 2007 is widely regarded as a seminal investigation of Afro-American music and culture.

McBride is a renowned saxophonist and songwriter who has toured with the likes of jazz great Jimmy Scott. Anita Baker, Grover Washington Jr., Pura Fé, Gary Burton, and even “Barney” from PBS have all recorded songs he composed. His musical Bobos, written with playwright Ed Shockley, won the Stephen Sondheim Award and the Richard Rodgers Foundation Horizon Award. His Riffin’ and Pontificatin’ tour from 2003 was captured on tape for a Comcast documentary that aired across the country. Television and radio stations all around the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand have interviewed him. He frequently has live music accompany his public readings.

McBride spent his twenties working as a journalist for the Boston Globe, People, and The Washington Post, all as a staff writer. His work has also been published in Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and Essence. After ten years as a feature writer for The Washington Post, he moved to New York to pursue a career in music, where he wrote songs for artists like as Anita Baker, Grover Washington Jr., Purafe, and Gary Burton. McBride received the Stephen Sondheim Award from the American Music Festival in 1993, the Richard Rodgers Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1996, and the Richard Rodgers Horizons Award from ASCAP in 1996. McBride is a multi-talented musician who also plays the tenor saxophone.

McBride’s bestseller autobiography, The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother, was published by Riverhead in 1997. This account of the author’s battle to accept his multiracial heritage, his mother’s Jewish background, and the state of race relations in the United States has been translated into sixteen languages. The autobiography was a New York Times bestseller for nearly two years, and it is currently required reading at American high schools and colleges.

Miracle at St. Anna, McBride’s first novel, was published in 2003 and tells the story of an unlikely bond between a black American soldier serving in Italy during WWII and a young Italian orphan. McBride is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University and he and his family currently reside in South Nyack, New York. He is now working on Quincy Jones’s autobiography for Doubleday Books, which was commissioned by the legendary American composer, producer, and jazz musician.

James has won various accolades for his writing and music. He has won several literary prizes, including the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in 1997. The American Music Theater Festival presented him with the Stephen Sondheim Award in 1993, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters honored him with the Richard Rodgers Award in 1996 and the Richard Rodgers Horizons Award in 1996. The Color of Water is James’s autobiographical account of his mother, a white Jewish woman from Poland who raised 12 black children.

He’s shared the stage with a wide range of performers, from Michael Jackson to jazz singer Little Jimmy Scott. In 1993, during the American Music Theater Festival in Philadelphia, his jazz/hip-hop musical “Bobos” premiered, winning the renowned Alton B. Jones Foundation Grant.

Musicals “All Roads Lead Home” and “Harlem Kids Symphony” were composed by James in 1993 for the Osaka, Japan Manaichi Broadcasting System, and he acted as musical director for the critically acclaimed musical “Lady Day,” which was based on the life of Billie Holiday. He has composed music for children’s books published by Simon & Schuster’s Silver Burdett imprint and for the PBS show “Barney.” James earned a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York at the age of 22, after having studied composition at Ohio’s The Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Before he became famous as a musician, he spent eight years as a journalist for publications like The Boston Globe, People, Rolling Stone, and The Washington Post.

Despite being McBride’s source of constant shame and fear for her safety, his mother was an inspirational character who managed to put all twelve of her children through college and many of them through graduate school through sheer force of will. In her son’s impressive memoir, she relates her life experience in her own words. A stunning portrayal of coming of age, a reflection on race and identity, and a moving, artfully composed hymn from a son to his mother surrounding her story, which was written by James McBride.
