Character animator James Baxter hails from the United Kingdom. Initially, he became well-known for his work on several films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. These films included several roles, such as those of different characters in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Rafiki in The Lion King, and Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Following the completion of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Baxter moved to DreamWorks Animation, where he worked on several critically acclaimed films, including Madagascar, The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Shrek 2. Following his departure from DreamWorks at the beginning of 2005, Baxter embarked on a career as an independent animator.
When he became the president of his own company, James Baxter Animation, which is located in Pasadena, California, he directed the animation for the film Enchanted, which was released in 2007, as well as the opening credits for the picture Kung Fu Panda, which was produced by DreamWorks. The work that he did on Kung Fu Panda earned him an Annie Award. The year 2008 was the year when Baxter shut down his company and went back to work for DreamWorks as a supervising animator.
During his time at DreamWorks, Baxter contributed to the production of several films, some of which include Monsters vs. Aliens, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods. In 2017, Baxter left DreamWorks once again and moved to work for Netflix. In May of 2013, Baxter served as a guest animator for an episode of Adventure Time that was named “James Baxter the Horse.” This episode was part of the fifth season of Adventure Time.
According to the plot of the episode, the main protagonists were attempting to imitate a horse named James Baxter who can make everyone happy by neighing his name and balancing on a beach ball. It was Baxter who was responsible for the animation as well as the voice of the horse. On the title card for the episode, there is a scene depicting a horse sitting at an animation table while drawing a horse riding a beach ball.
During the eighth season of the program, a second episode titled “Horse and Ball” was shown. This episode focused on the character’s beginnings, and Baxter once again animated and voiced the personality of the character. At the 2018 Annie Awards, Baxter, along with fellow animators Stephen Hillenburg (a few months before his death), Amanda Forbis, and Wendy Tilby, was announced as the recipient of the Winsor McCay Award.
Even though you may not be familiar with the name James Baxter, the British animator, you have most likely seen his work. He was the character animator for the character of Belle in the 1991 film Beauty and the Beast, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. He also worked on Rafiki, the wise mandrill, in The Lion King. Most recently, he worked on Valka, Hiccup’s mother, in How to Train Your Dragon 2.
Before landing a full-time position at Disney’s animation studio, he began his career by working as an assistant on Robert Zemeckis’ Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988), a film that included a cast of cartoon characters that included both real action and iconic cartoon characters. When asked about the team that worked on Beauty and the Beast, he replies, “We were still a fairly young crew.”
We had just finished The Little Mermaid, and the whole studio was beginning to get the impression that there was a bit of a wave coming, that Disney was reaching its stride in a new manner, particularly with Howard Ashman and [composer] Alan Menken performing the music for the film.
James Baxter served as the character animator for Ariel in the Disney picture The Little Mermaid, which he then went on to work on after Roger Rabbit and the short film Tummy Trouble. Disney’s entry into what is now regarded as the Disney Renaissance of animation began with the release of this picture. In addition to his work for Disney, Baxter continued to contribute to the production of DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp.
The Rescuers Down Under (as the character animator for Joanna, Rescue Aid Society Mice, and Wilbur), Beauty and the Beast (as the supervisor of the animator for Belle), The Lion King (as the supervisor of the animator for Rafiki), and finally, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (as the character designer and the supervisor of the animator for Quasimodo).
Following his completion of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Baxter departed from Disney to become a member of Dreamworks Animation, where he worked on a number of the company’s projects. His debut with Dreamworks came in the form of The Prince of Egypt, in which he worked as an animator for the character of Moses.
The Road to El Dorado (as a senior supervising animator for Tulio), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (as a senior supervising animator for Spirit), Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (as a supervising animator for Sinbad), Shrek 2 (as a supervising animator), and Madagascar (as an additional supervising animator) were some of the other Dreamworks films that Baxter continued to work on.
