Harvey Keitel Bio

Harvey Johannes Keitel was born on May 13th, 1939 in the borough of Brooklyn, New York. Both of his parents, Nikonar Keitel and Maritska LeCose traveled as Jews to the United States from Poland and Romania, respectively, in order to start a new life there. When Keitel was 16 years old, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and his service finally took him to Lebanon for the length of Operation Blue Bat. As soon as he arrived back in the United States, he went to work as a court reporter in order to provide for himself before beginning a career in acting.

After gaining his start in a couple of musicals that were performed off-Broadway, Keitel was eventually able to make it on Broadway. During this time, Keitel became friends with a struggling film producer named Martin Scorsese, and the two ended up working together on a student film called Who’s That Knocking at My Door? in 1967. Since that point in time, the two men have worked together on a variety of different projects. Keitel’s career had a few setbacks in the 1960s, which resulted in his concentrating on European films toward the end of the 1970s.

In the 1980s, Keitel rose to prominence as an actor in both the theater and cinema industries. He was known for playing the role of a vicious offender in several of his roles. The part of Mr. White that Harvey Keitel played in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs in 1992 marked a turning point for the actor’s career. Keitel has made it a point to select roles that highlight the breadth of his acting abilities, such as the one he played in Jane Campion’s film The Piano. Keitel is a co-owner and co-operator of the film production firm known as The Goatsingers alongside his business partner Peggy Gormley.

Keitel is most known for his roles in the films “National Treasure” and “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” but he also appears in the film “Pulp Fiction” directed by Quentin Tarantino. After that, he appeared in a few comedies, such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, and Little Fockers.

Keitel was born in Brooklyn on May 13, 1939, and his upbringing in that city was characterized by a certain amount of defiance. When he was just 16 years old, the Marine Corps dispatched him to Lebanon, which put an end to his habit of skipping school. After returning to the United States, he pursued his ambitions of becoming an actor while working as a shoe salesman. After completing his training with Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler, he began his career as an actor by appearing in off-off-Broadway productions. When Keitel was just 26 years old, he answered a casting call that was made by Scorsese, who at the time was a student filmmaker at New York University. As a result of their collaboration, some of the most memorable sequences in the history of cinema were created.

The first film that Martin Scorsese and Harvey Keitel worked on together was Who’s That Knocking at My Door? in which Keitel had the role of Scorsese’s body double. Mean Streets, which they made together five years later, and their other 1970s collaborations, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, and Taxi Driver were two of the most memorable films of that decade. They also worked together in Mean Streets. In spite of all of this success, Keitel’s career suffered a significant setback when Martin Sheen was chosen to play the lead part in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now rather than him. Before he was cast in Thelma & Louise in 1991, Martin Sheen’s career was in a slump, and not even the controversial film The Last Temptation of Christ directed by Martin Scorsese could pull it out of it.

Keitel’s career took a significant turn in 1991 and 1992 due to his portrayal as Mickey Cohen, the gangster, in the film Bugsy and his performance as a sympathetic investigator in the film Thelma and Louise. Keitel’s reputation as a talented actor who had been undervalued up until that point was cemented in 1992 thanks to his work in the films Bad Lieutenant, Reservoir Dogs, and Sister Act. All three of those films were released that year. In the 1993 film The Piano, starring opposite Holly Hunter in Jane Campion’s exotic art drama, in which he notably appeared in the nude, he further exhibited the range that he possessed as an actor.

Keitel continued to demonstrate for the remainder of the decade that he was capable of credibly portraying both brutal criminals and rugged heroes by giving a succession of remarkable performances in films such as Pulp Fiction, Clockers, and Copland. His collaboration with Paul Auster on the films Smoke and Blue in the Face, in addition to Auster’s love drama Lulu on the Bridge, which was released in 1998, provided him with one of the most memorable roles of his career, which was of cigar shop owner Auggie Wren. In the year 1999, Keitel had roles in a number of films, including Tony Bui’s Three Seasons as an American soldier searching for his missing daughter in Vietnam and Jane Campion’s Holy Smoke as a gentleman assigned to deprogram Kate Winslet of the teachings she gained while a member of a religious cult. In both of these films, Keitel played the role of a male who was tasked with deprogramming Winslet.

In the film The Grey Zone, released in 2001, Keitel played a victim of the Holocaust. In the film Taking Sides, released the same year, he won plaudits for his performance as the condescending Major Steve Arnold. Throughout the 2000s, Keitel had sporadic employment opportunities, and in 2008, he was cast as a regular on the ABC sitcom Life on Mars, which unfortunately did not last long.
