Kenya was a British colony when Gurinder Chadha was born there. The Indian diaspora in East Africa included her family. When she was two, her family relocated to Southall, West London, and she enrolled at Clifton Primary School. The fact that Chadha’s father was a Sikh Indian, recognizable by his turban and beard, made him a target of bigotry. The family eventually opened a store to help stabilize their finances.
Being both Indian and English, and learning to reconcile those identities, would provide inspiration for many of her future films. She also flat-out refused to do things like prepare meals for her family or wear traditional Indian dress. Although it is still practiced today, she found the custom of having all the women cook while the men sat and ate to be oppressive. So, she joined the males at the dinner table, where she was described as “extremely outspoken.” Chadha earned his bachelor’s degree in 1984 from the University of East Anglia and then went on to earn his master’s degree in 1985 from the London College of Printing.
Chadha began her career in the media in the mid-1980s as a radio journalist before transitioning to television as a BBC news reporter. After that, she directed several critically acclaimed documentaries for the BFI, BBC, and Channel 4, including the 1989 release of I’m British but… for Channel 4. This film chronicled the experiences of young British Asians. Chadha founded Umbi Films in the year 1990. Her debut feature was the British Asian wedding comedy Nice Arrangement, which ran for just 11 minutes. In 1991, it was shown at the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week.
Bhaji on the Beach, her first movie, was nominated for a British Academy Film Award and received the Evening Standard British Film Award for “Best Newcomer to British Cinema.” In 1993, the picture brought Chadha widespread acclaim for the first time. It was the first feature-length picture directed by a woman of Asian descent in the United Kingdom. The film centers on a day in the lives of Indian women of varying ages and how they adapt their traditions to fit in with contemporary life in the United Kingdom. Chadha uses complexity and subtlety in both conversation and clothing to convey the fact that these women are from a certain culture.
As an illustration of how she is blending her two cultures, one woman layers a leather jacket over her traditional Indian clothing. Both the white males and the elder Indian ladies in the British-Indian community are prejudiced toward the newer generations of Indians because of their appearance and behavior. Younger Indian women, inspired by the “oppression” Chadha battled so hard to overcome, hold more progressive views and are challenging the conventional role of the Indian woman.
She directed the 1995 BBC drama Rich Deceiver, which drew 11 million viewers across its two parts. The British script What’s Cooking? was the first to be invited to the Sundance Institute’s Writer’s Lab, and the film premiered on the festival’s opening night in 2000.
Before the triumph of Slumdog Millionaire, Bend It Like Beckham was the highest-grossing British-financed, British-distributed picture ever in the UK. The film won audience favorite prizes at the Locarno, Sydney, and Toronto film festivals and topped the box office in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, and South Africa. The movie was up for Best Picture at the Golden Globes, Best British Film at the BAFTAs, Best Film at the European Film Academies, and Best Original Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards.
Similar to the protagonist in”Bhaji on the Beach,”’Bend it Like Beckham”follows Jess, a strong Indian-British lady who struggles to balance her responsibilities as the daughter of traditional Indian parents with the pursuit of her own aspirations. It was promoted to American audiences as a “chick flick,” but in Britain, it was recognized as a significant post-feminist picture that blended in well with the British progressive frame of 2002.
In a letter of congratulations to Chadha, Prime Minister Blair gushed, “We loved it, loved it because this is my Britain.” Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha intended it as a “girl power” story about two women from different backgrounds coming together to pursue a common goal of becoming professional soccer players. The film’s exploration of racial and sexual prejudice, however, elevated it above the “chick flick” category. Meaningful discussion of interracial pairing and lesbian stereotypes enriches the “girl power movie.”Jane Austen meets Bollywood and the West in Bride and Prejudice, the first film to debut at No. 1 in both the United Kingdom and India on the same day. Bollywood, Hollywood, and a “British sensibility” were all mashed up in this film.
Chadha gives each character and scene in the book an Indian spin. For instance, the female protagonist is now an Indian and the male protagonist is a white man, but in the original work, they were from different social classes. However, the movie wasn’t made to resemble a traditional Bollywood production. The film has been heavily modified for Western viewership. Numbers from Bollywood and Western musicals like “Grease” and “West Side Story” are included.
