Fatboy Slim Bio

Englishman Norman Cook was born around the year 1963. Norman Cook, the English disc jockey, musician, and record producer who records as Fatboy Slim, found widespread alternative success in the United States beginning with his album Better Living Through Chemistry, released in the latter half of 1997. The Chemical Brothers, his good friends, and collaborators in the “big beat” subgenre, inspired the album’s title. Not an easy market for the Brit techno pack to break, Better Living broke through to American audiences with the help of the trippy, nearly vocal-less cut “Going Out of My Head.” In the Village Voice, Simon Reynolds compared Fatboy Slim’s music to “pub rock–the laddish, unsophisticated but necessary prequel to an imminent punk-style reformulation/intensification of rave’s unruly essence.”

Cook reemerged at the helm of a group called Beats International when affordable synthesizers and samplers became available on the market and made his visions a reality. When released as a single in 1989, “Dub Be Good to Me” immediately became a hit. This song, which topped the charts in the United Kingdom, was constructed around a sample from a dance classic from the ’70s.

Cook’s career would span numerous musical genres and monikers, including the Beats project. Mixmag’s Kim Taylor described his subsequent work under the Pizzaman moniker as “an incendiary concoction of pumping house and heady club beats.” Cook has remixed dance hits by other artists like A Certain Ratio, the Bassbin Twins, and the Stereo MCs, as well as releasing his own projects like Norman Cook Presents Wildski and Fried Funk Food.

It wasn’t until Cook and Ashley Slater established Freakpower that he had his second true “band” experience. When a European television commercial featuring a transvestite featured their 1993 track “Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out,” the band gained some notoriety. While Cook and Slater’s album Drive-Thru Booty was not commercially successful, the duo did get to tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Despite the financial success of the shows, Cook found the demands of touring to be too much and reverted to releasing music under a variety of pseudonyms.

The Fatboy Slim persona that Cook created was inspired by a night called “Sunday Social” at a trendy London club. DJs Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, who became known as the Chemical Brothers after releasing the hit single “Setting Sun” in the United States in late 1996, were favorites of Cook’s because of the massive, pounding beats they constructed around memorable samples.

Cook told Hampton, “I was actually making all these records that I wish somebody else had made, but they hadn’t,” after the club success of “Santa Cruz” prompted him to create more. Damian Harris, a member of the Brighton underground who runs the record label Skint Records, discovered him and his skills. Cook’s work was greatly admired and supported by Harris, as well as Rowlands and Simons, who were at the time enjoying success in Europe with their Chemical Brothers singles.

Most of Fatboy Slim’s songs revolved around a single recognizable sample, like the guitar riff from The Who’s “I Can’t Explain” that became “Going Out of My Head.” Cook completed the album at the beginning of 1996, and this song was to be the first release from it. After the success of Harris’s Better Living Through Chemistry on his Skint label in the United Kingdom, the record company Astralwerks/Caroline decided to release it in the rest of the world.

Similarly, Reynolds expressed this view in an article for the Village Voice. There hasn’t been a more enjoyable dance CD out this year, he said. Better Living Through Chemistry is “a party record,” as Cook himself told Sonic Soul’s Retina. This is not a piece to passively consume just listening to it. Isn’t it obvious how ridiculous it all is? It lacks intellectual depth.

Cook told Mixmag’s Taylor, “because he’s my least favorite person in the music industry,” the reason for writing the track “Michael Jackson,” which has some of his harshest criticisms of the industry. Though endowed with one of the most powerful soul voices of all time, he insists on yelling throughout his recordings. He’s a terrific example of what a black leader could have accomplished had he not decided to pretend to be white. Oh, and he says he is the Christ. Everything that’s bad about the music industry can be summed up in him, I think.

Due to his popularity as Fatboy Slim, Cook was able to secure more employment. Bootsy Collins, the toe bass player for George Clinton’s stellar P-Funk ensemble, approached him about producing an album for him. Collins trampled a hole in the floor of Cook’s bedroom studio because he was so enthralled by a big-beat track that Cook played him. Cook doesn’t mind if his living room is trashed because he’s recognized as one of Brighton’s top party hosts and his carpet is made of easy-to-clean yellow smiling faces. A large group of friends regularly congregates at “the house of love” after the clubs close; one party lasted a record-breaking 38 hours.

He keeps releasing his own dance tracks under different names, as the demand for this genre of music in his home country of the United Kingdom appears to be limitless. The prevalence of clubs is far higher than in the United States; even the smallest villages have at least one legitimate rave/techno warehouse with an enormous sound system. “Most people spend two nights a week in a nightclub and you’re making the soundtrack to that,” Cook said to Hampton.
